Being immortal means not much phases you. Except perhaps your private, extremely platonic letters to your rival throughout the years being put on display. A display that seems to suggest you were in love with each other. It gets even worse if that's the place you end up reuniting with said rival after centuries apart. The only thing making it worse would be reuniting with said rival in front of it after centuries apart.

Summary
Ferdinand Von Aegir did not spend too much time at the opera or reading novels as a child. If his thoughts now ever wander to being tied up by a strikingly handsome adversary (which they do not), it is only because he needs to be prepared with a good strategy, should that ever come to pass. Also, avoiding Hubert is much more difficult at Garreg Mach than it had been in Enbarr.
Hubert prides himself on his powers of intimidation and detection, and Ferdinand is obviously hiding something. It is Hubert's duty to his future Emperor to put a stop to it.
OR: Ferdinand thinks they're in a gothic novel and Hubert thinks they're in a spy thriller. They're both wrong. It's a romantic comedy.

The battle had been won - yet when the Demonic Beast emerged, it's strike to Ferdinand (or, Ferdinand could have sworn, to Hubert) left him near death. When Hubert sought him out to check on his recovery, he found him with Linhardt strapped to an experimental contraption. It was code for “At this point, why not try whatever we can?”
After all, Ferdinand could have easily broken every single rib given the disturbing sound that followed the monster's attack. To say nothing that Ferdinand coughing up blood suggested the damage inside would be extensive.
Hubert hadn’t known it was possible to be burdened by someone else’s suffering. He hadn’t known the looming dread that some part of Hubert could be forever lost by the death of someone else.
Having one single attachment to Edelgard above all else made everything beautifully simple. Even simpler, they each held an unwavering commitment to the cause. Should either of them perish, the grief would be but another weapon against their enemy.
The upheaval inside of Hubert felt far from simple.
