The sight that greeted him was equally as breathtaking as it was terrifying.
Deep blue water surrounded his pod, which had thankfully triggered the detection system and had made his pod use it's floating devices. The colors looked familiar, almost normal. Nothing but vast ocean, no islands, no distant shores. Nothing. It almost seemed like he was just stranded in an ocean on earth, if it weren't for the giant planet he could clearly see in the sky. Either this water planet was an orbiting moon to that large red planet, or that was a very large moon orbiting this planet.
But that wasn't even the worst of it all. Because a couple miles away, the remains of the large exploded ship sat half submerged in the water, lifeless and silent. Some fires were still burning, now fueled by the new oxygen this planet provides. It stung, seeing it like this. It would have been his only way home, his only way of calling for help. But he doubts that any of the radio systems were still working. No long range communication to other ships or even a space station or two. And the systems of his own pod were fried too.
He was completely stuck.

The battle was going badly.
It wasn’t like Phil’s squad was ever given more than the absolute minimum of information war slaves needed to kill the enemies of Endlantis, but this time it really seemed like orders had left out facts that would have been really fucking useful to know. Enemies frequently came to attack the sunken capital city, safe in its magical orb of repelled water, but this time the attackers had driven the captive armies back across the shore. They'd taken magically-protected point after magically-protected point. They had gear that cut through the defenders’ weapons and armour like paper. They had tactics that knew how to defeat the carefully-designed defence techniques the war slaves had pulled together. And they were taking the slaves captive, for reasons he could only assume were bad.
“Reinforce the right!” Phil yelled, getting his shield arm around to block a blow. The weapon sunk into his shield like a hot knife into butter. “We’re getting fuckin’ pushed!”

The smell of blood filled the flier’s cockpit as Phil coaxed it over the landscape, wings wobbling as they crested a hill. The machine was solar-powered and they’d stolen it off the field before it recharged, and with the cloud-covered sun going down now, he’d been getting emergency power - land immediately warnings blinking at him from the display for the last ten minutes. It was taking absolutely all of his concentration to keep the machine in the air, using the last gasps of the machine’s energy reserves to rise over obstacles and then glide down on the other side. “You doin’ okay there, Techno?” he managed, attention on the darkening landscape in front of him. There was an updraft over there, if he could just catch it and glide further-- they were so close to making it out.
