Roger and Freddie had been invited by Winifred for a lunch at Truro with Clare and her boyfriend Theo.
He wasn't the biggest fan of family lunches. Sure, Winifred was a lovely woman, but family lunches had always been associated with his parents talking about things they eventually expected and things he knew he didn't want, with fake smiles and promises he'd never keep. And they hadn't announced to her they were more than best friends.
Still, Roger's smiles were reassuring. Maybe the lunch would be enjoyable.
