Summary
Ilya can’t take his eyes off of him. Mostly because that’s just how the game goes, he’d like the win, also for his own game and glory. But also because the way Hollander moves is so fluid. So effortless in the way his body tilts a little, giving him some leverage as he sweeps past Karlsson like he’s flying.
So when Hollander suddenly drops to the ice with a resounding thud, he can’t quite wrap his head around what’d happened.
Nothing stills, not straight away. It feels more like a train running out of steam the way everybody starts to slow down.
Pike was already throwing his gloves off, throwing his voice towards a stunned looking Cliff Marleau whom Ilya knew was actually innocent in all this.
Nobody had touched Shane — there’d been no dirty plays or even accidental ones. One second he’d been flying, and the next he was sliding across the ice in a crumbled heap, his stick and the discarded puck skittering towards the boards with abandon.

Summary
Finally, something dawns on him, a way to handle two goals simultaneously. He’d seen Hollander’s mother flipping through papers rapidly when they first got here, seeming calm and in control and more than a little frightening in a way that made Ilya mildly glad he wasn’t one of the people responsible for a clipboard. If anyone can tell him if the long list of “Prohibited Items” he’d been sent in his email a few days ago is just standard practice for big shoots, it would be Yuna Hollander.
Or, hopefully, her son.
“Crazy we cannot even have peanut butter, eh?” He asks. “You also got giant list?”
Hollander stiffens, almost imperceptibly, and Ilya tilts his head, just slightly, confused, wondering if he’s stumbled somewhere unexpected.

Summary
“Hollander,” Ilya murmured gently. “Bath is ready.”
Shane cracked his eyes open, staring dumbly at the burly Russian hovering over him where he was still laying in bed.
“…bath?” He croaked, voice raspy with disuse.
“Mm. I ran you a bath. It will make you feel better before you go to sleep tonight. Will help with your sore muscles.”
Shane asks Ilya to fuck him gently during one of their regular hookups, badly bruised from their game. Ilya runs him a bath afterwards, and they fall secretly and desperately in love that way, through whispered confessions and late night conversations while Shane soaks, and Ilya quietly observes him.

“We’ve made a trade,” Coach announces. “For Shane Hollander.”
It’s like the ground drops out from beneath Ilya, and his heart falls from his chest. It tumbles past rock bottom, down to the cavern that shattered open inside of him on that night five years ago. The night when Ilya walked away from Hollander for the last time.
He can’t breathe.
(Or: Shane doesn’t get hurt, they break up, and they don’t talk for five long years. Until Shane is traded to Ottawa.)
