Summary
He’s in a private hospital room- one in the military hospital back on base, if he had to guess. There’s an IV in his elbow, and a heart monitor, and a whole host of other machines that he can’t quite get a look at from here. There’s a single, tiny window in the corner, though any light passing through it is dimmed by closely-drawn blinds. And by the bedside there’s Bucky, slumped in a cramped plastic chair, his arms folded. He’s glaring at the heart monitor’s screen with narrowed eyes. He doesn’t seem to notice Sam at all.
“Morning, sunshine,” Sam tries to say. What he manages is more of a rough, hacking cough. Bucky snaps to attention like he’s just been administered an electric shock. Sam is half-surprised that he doesn’t leap out of his chair.

“When’s the last time someone else stitched you up?” Bucky asked. He was still speaking in that breathy, low tone, like he was afraid something might shatter if he raised his voice.
“I don’t know,” admitted Sam. “Years, probably.”
His answer seemed to physically wound Bucky. For a moment, Sam was worried he might cry. Instead, he just lifted his left hand; touched a single finger to the side of the wound. Sam shivered from the cold touch of the metal.
“Is there anything else I can do?” Bucky said, watching the way Sam’s ribcage rose and fell with each breath. The question, for some reason, made Sam want to slam his head against a wall. He’d heard it often, but in all the wrong places. Never when he needed it. And never like this.

“But I don’t want to sleep alone.” It’s flirtatious, but there’s a sorrow underlying the words as well, the kind that stirs up memories in Bucky.
It’s been a long time since Bucky felt equipped to take on another person’s burdens, the kind that can’t be easily fixed. And hell, it’s not as if they haven’t shared a bed before. Tonight just might involve a certain closeness, and if Bucky is being honest with himself, he’s missed the way Sam used to sling an arm around him, used to touch his shoulder or rub a reassuring hand over his back or neck.
