Someone had to be booted for Shiro’s precious nepo baby, and that makes us enemies!” Lance was pretty much shouting now, stealth completely shrugged off in her indignation. “I think I’m just as good as you if not better, and I worked hard! It’s not fair that you get to just waltz in with your stupid name and stupid talent and stupid lame-ass hair-do and cut to the front of the line!”
Suddenly, Lance wasn’t a pretty girl in a bookstore bantering with Keith- she was a threat and a reminder that even the good things Keith got came from the muck under someone’s boot. Who the fuck did Lance think she was? Keith could tell from her confidence, from her inner glow, from her bouncy little footsteps and shit eating grin that Lance grew up loved. People who had a home carried it with them in their bones. It kept them warm and kept them looking forward. And for one minute, Keith felt white hot. She felt pissed and angry and ready to spit.
Keith leaned forward and flicked Lance right on her prissy little nose. “Life ain’t fair, kid. You don’t like it? Kick rocks.”

Summary
Kat considers flipping Iverson off. She considers failing her simulator run on purpose. She even considers the argument she’ll have with Shiro if she’s thrown out the Garrison.
But there’s a girl in her class named Leah, currently an inch shorter, currently a mile-a-minute kind of talker, and Kat stays because of her. It’s not that Leah’s nice—no, Kat stays because Leah is so loud, so irritating, so uniquely infuriating, that Kat simply needs to be better than her.
