Mike really wanted to quit his job right there and then.
No other urge or feeling could help with the frustration he felt working his 9th hour of the day on Christmas Eve, shuffling through paper and highlighting blurry words, all while sitting on the decidedly too comfortable sofa in Harvey’s condo. All the while, fighting the compulsion to just sleep it off and finally enjoy his holiday.
Yes, they were working off office hours.
Yes, Harvey insisted they continued the work in his much more proper condo.
No, Mike was not even sure he was getting paid for the work he had done today.
He wanted to quit so badly that if he needed to get fired to regain his freedom back, then so be it. Screw Harvey and all that.
'I love my job, I love my job, I love my job,' Mike repeated the sacred mantra in his head for the billionth time that year.
“I paid you to find me clues, Watson, not to sit there and lead us in prayer,” Harvey cut through his inner begging with a disapproving glare and yet another stack of files dumped onto the coffee table in front of him.
Rage-quitting is all the rage nowadays, right?

“I can do it.” Mike mumbled, vehemently refusing to look up and acknowledge how close Harvey was standing to him.
Harvey ignored his protests, pulling the silk tie between his fingers before pausing.
“Is this my tie?”
“I spilled coffee on mine,” Mike shrugged. “Besides, thought you’d prefer me not wearing a skinny tie.”

Mike had crossed that line somewhere around his fourth drink, maybe his fifth, the exact number blurring into an impression of confidence and warmth that sat loose in his chest. He laughed too easily, leaned too close, talked with his hands like he always did when his thoughts ran faster than his mouth. Harvey watched him from the other side of the small round table, nursing a scotch and pretending he was not counting.
Mike had been celebrating. That was the official excuse. He had won an argument with Louis earlier that day, which Harvey privately considered less of a victory and more of a temporary ceasefire, but Mike had insisted it counted. Harvey had let him have it. A few months ago he would have shut this down before it started. A few months ago he would have left Mike to get plastered with Rachel and gone home alone. Things changed quietly, the way they tended to with them.

Mike was desperate. He needed to get a very persistent client, who had specifically requested him, off his back without jeopardizing the firm's soon-to-be biggest account. Telling the client off wasn't an option. Jessica would kill him, or worse, fire him if he lost the business.
Then Mike looked through the conference room glass and spotted Harvey. An idea came to him. It seemed harmless enough at the time.
After all, it was only supposed to be fake dating.

So now he was here. Alone. Loosely drunk on cheap scotch from the bodega down the block, slouched on his too-small couch with his laptop perched on his thighs, a pizza crust balanced precariously on an old LSAT textbook. The internet was an abyss and Mike had surrendered willingly, clicking his way from basketball highlights to a thirty-minute video essay on the evolution of Batman's voice. And then, predictably, to porn.
At first it was just the jawline that made his stomach jolt. Then the voice—rougher, higher-pitched, younger—but unmistakably his. And when the camera panned down, bare chest rising and falling with breathy gasps, lit by harsh, clinical lighting, Mike nearly dropped his laptop.

Rationally, he knew Harvey never intended to hurt him. He didn't even intend for Mike to notice, he was sure. But reading Harvey came as easily as breathing for Mike, and thus so did the niggling shame for the things he enjoyed.

It wasn’t that it didn’t fit—it did, technically—but there was a tightness to it that hadn’t been there before. A whisper of resistance right where his stomach curved, soft and new. He tried sucking in a little, fastening it again, and it worked, sure, but the line of the fabric wasn’t lying. The man staring back at him wasn’t quite the same sleek, wiry version of himself that had started working under Harvey Specter.

The first note appeared on a Thursday, tucked beneath the edge of Mike's keyboard like something that had crawled there in the night and died. He almost didn't notice it at first, too busy trying to locate the Riordan file that Harvey had asked for twenty minutes ago and that Mike swore he'd left right there, right in that spot, and now it was gone, and possibly this was somehow related, possibly someone had broken into the firm at three in the morning purely to steal a file and leave behind a folded piece of paper... that was a completely normal and not at all insane thing to think.
He unfolded it anyway.
You have no idea what you do to me, it said, in narrow, slanted handwriting that looked like it had been written by someone gripping the pen too hard. Every time you walk past my office I think about how easy it would be.

Mike had always believed there was a sweet spot to drinking. A narrow, shimmering window where everything felt possible, where jokes landed harder, where the night cracked open and let you step through it. He had missed that window by several miles and was now tumbling down a hill with no brakes, Trevor laughing too loud beside him, the bar lights smearing into something soft and unreal.
"This," Trevor said, slinging an arm around Mike’s shoulders, "is what freedom tastes like."
Freedom tasted like cheap whiskey and regret and the vague sense that his phone was vibrating even though it wasn’t. Mike squinted at his glass, then at Trevor, then at the blonde across the bar who had definitely been smiling at him five minutes ago and was now very clearly talking to someone else.
