Summary
After confiding in each other that the Christmas holidays leave them both feeling lonely and left out, Peter and Assumpta have made plans to spend Boxing Day together and have their own holiday celebration. Boxing Day is traditionally quiet in Ballykissangel, with both the church and the pub closed, so the two decide to claim it for their date, knowing others won’t miss them. Whoops! They don’t have a date planned! It’s just a small celebration between friends, or so they keep telling themselves.

After he gets over the shock of Barbara being temporarily reassigned, Tommy offers Barbara the use of his family’s flat in Oxford. After a fortnight, Tommy decides a surprise visit is just what Barbara will need after two lonely weeks away from the Met, and him. It doesn’t occur to Tommy that Barbara may not be lonely, at all.

He feels the signs there with her from the first. First meeting on the bridge of her ship, she is glorious with battle-fire, her eyes, ablaze with adrenaline, flicking down to his mouth, over his body in a visceral challenge.
