“Hey,” he says, coming closer. “What are you doing out here?”
Buck wet his lips before answering. “You said you wanted me to go outside. I’m outside.” He answers Eddie with a clipped tone, something he does often nowadays, and Eddie’s first instinct is to bite on his tongue and look away. Away from Buck and the IV bag, away from the blanket he carries with him like a child does with his blanky, away from the dark bags under his eyes and his yellow-ish skin. Buck has lost a lot of weight, not only because of the recovery from his injuries that had him on bed rest for weeks, but also because once he was cleared to do light activities, Buck chose to stay in bed instead. He’d been moving from the bed to the couch for weeks, walking around the house like a ghost, barely speaking and barely aware of the world around him, really.
OR : it's been six months since Buck was abducted. things are still not easy.

“What if I went in there instead?” He spits out, trying anything he can to make Eddie not go inside that store. That feeling he’s had all day is at an all-time high right now, making him even more worried about what might happen on this call. He can’t survive losing anyone else.
“Seriously?” Eddie says, stopping in his tracks. “Buck, no offence, but you have no idea what you’d be doing in there. You aren’t a paramedic, and you’ve never been in service before. It’d be way more dangerous to send you, of all people, in there. Not just for yourself, but for the person who was shot and the man who shot him.”
“But–”
“I’m going, and that’s final. I’ll see you when I get out.”

Buck can't remember when he realized hunger could be a choice.
It didn't start out as a conscious decision of, Oh, I shouldn't eat today, just a rushing to school before he had time for breakfast, forgetting to bring lunch, being at football practice too late and missing dinner.
But when Maddie left, it became more deliberate, calculated. Putting the apple back in the bowl, eating half his lunch and giving away the rest, saying he got dinner on the way home.
