Summary
A man appears at the end of the staircase. He’s of tall size: long legs and broad shoulders. Hair pale as alabaster, and eyes a soft, familiar blue. He’s wearing a long white coat. Intricate embroideries are sewn onto the fabric of his sleeves, flowers vining from his cuffs to his shoulder — delicate, and counter-balanced by the large broadsword hanging from his hip. Mydei assumes that whoever the man is, he’s important. A duke, or some lord.
“Oh,” the man says with a sigh, shoulders sagging in relief. “You’re awake. I thought you’d never open your eyes again.”

Summary
The thick, darkening grey smoke of the signal fire had extinguished during the night, leaving from their call for help only perishing embers. There was no sign of any response on the horizon, no neighboring pyres set ablaze to dispatch reinforcements; only the Kremnoan forces marching their way, an indomitable cloud of red and gold swallowing the fields and grinding them into tasteless dust—into soon-to-be conquered land.
The army would be at their door tomorrow. No one would come and save Aedes Elysiae.

Summary
“I’ll tell you,” Mydei concedes, but there’s a growing, playful part of him who wants to make Phainon struggle more, until Mydei has to face his entire anger and possessiveness and shatter against it in a million pieces. “But only if you do something for me first."
He expects Phainon to fight him on this. It’s how it’s always been between them: they bicker until one of them gives up, and then makes the other fight twice as hard next time. It’s an Alpha thing, petty and annoying and instinctual, like looking back after someone bumped into you — but Phainon doesn’t fight. Phainon’s voice is clear and quiet, compressed in the closed space of his Sedan, and more honest than Mydei will ever be.
“Tell me," he says. "And I’ll do it.”
How simple. How frighteningly easy.
“Anything?”
“Anything.”
How sobering.
Mydei stops laughing. Mydei confesses.
