Summary
Shane pulls open a drawer where he keeps a pen and a note pad, and quickly pulls it out to start writing. Ilya won’t tell him what is wrong, but he at least has a few ideas.
1. Ilya misses Boston. He lived there for years, had established a life there with friends. More of a clubbing and party scene than Ottawa. He misses Svetlana.
2. Ilya misses the Raiders. He moved to a bottom of the barrel team, before Ilya came along they lost more games than they won and it’s only recently that they’ve been winning anything, and even then the losses are still frequent.
3.Shane stops writing. His heart hammers in his ears as he stares down at the notepad, the sad little list looking back at him.
3. Ilya is lonely. He misses sex. He misses women.

Shane notices that something is bothering Ilya. He seems miserable, and the less he talks to Shane about it, the more Shane begins to spiral, searching for a reason and ways to make it better. Turns out, he could not have been more wrong.Based on chapter 21 of The Long Game, instead of Ilya suggesting that Shane should sleep with other men, Shane suggests Ilya should sleep with women.

It doesn't bother Shane. Really, it's not that big of a deal. Yes, Ilya and Svetlana used to sleep together, but they're just friends now. Shane knows that Ilya loves him. He isn't worried. Really. It's just that when they're sitting that close and whispering inside jokes to one another, it's hard to forget the way Ilya had once said, "I could marry Svetlana," like that was an acceptable option for him. Really, though. It's fine... Shane can make it one week with Svetlana in their home. Really.

It’s relaxing and nice and Shane is so warm against Ilya. When the conversation comes to a lull, Ilya turns his head to leave a kiss on Shane’s temple. He can’t help it, he’s feeling so happy and he has his husband in his arms. What is he supposed to do, not kiss him?
He thinks he hears Shane’s breath catch a little but he's not entirely sure because Wyatt has started talking about a show he’s been watching over the summer.
Ilya listens but he gets distracted when he feels Shane slowly tense up. Shane’s not only quiet but he seems distracted, his eyes faraway when Ilya looks at him. Ilya feels alarmed when he sees the eyes start to shimmer a bit more than normal. That’s when he gently squeezes Shane’s arm and Shane snaps to present, looking at Ilya before quickly looking away.
“I’ll be right back,” he says quietly and gets up, leaving Ilya feeling cold and confused.

Change can be complicated, even if the change is a good one.
Shane and Ilya have spent years hiding and it has left a mark that sometimes stings at moments when they don’t expect it.
