"Yeah, yeah... so I've been told." The corner of Daniil's mouth quirked up into a morbid grin, and Artemy frowned. "If you're—'f you're thinking of stabbing me for it, I regret to inform you that you've been beaten to the chase, dear Haruspex."

Late at night, Artemy finds a drunk Daniil walking home with a stab wound. Artemy carries him to safety and stitches him up. Daniil is not as careful with his fresh sutures as he should be.

"I can't believe things here are so completely laissez-faire," he shook his head. "Do you mean to tell me that those in heat and those in a position to- to take advantage of their condition are simply allowed to mingle freely? In any case, we can't-"
"Wait," Artemy blurted out. "You're saying you’re a- you're in heat?"
And that seemed to complete the stranger's confoundment. Along with the apartment's silence, lying flat and stricken between them.
"No," he said, in the way he might have explained the wetness of water to someone somehow encountering it for the first time. "You are."
