After the war ended, there was fierce debate about whether Handler-Pilot pairs should be allowed to stay together, for the good of both parties involved. But separating them peacefully never lasted long, so eventually even the most stubborn politicians gave in.
After all, punishing the Handlers for what happened to their Pilots was never really an option. Imprisonment for violation of an NDA versus for violations of human rights wasn’t much of a difference for the prisoner, and everyone involved knew that the Handlers hadn’t really been the ones breaking the Pilots. They were delivered shattered, and the Handlers just put the pieces back together.
Oh, human rights advocates railed against the decision, but they failed to understand one simple thing: We weren’t human. Not anymore. And what greater crime is there than leaving a weapon to rot without a wielder?
