Tim barely hears what Dr. Warren is saying as he pauses in the doorway to the NICU.
She’s not mine, he thinks, and even though he’s only known about this baby, Isabel’s baby, for less than two hours, he feels tears prickling in his eyes.
Isabel left eight months ago.

She’s been planning it for weeks, excitedly bugging him about his favorite foods and what wine would go best with the steaks they’d decided on, and Tim had promised her that he would be off on time. He’d promised he wouldn’t have to cancel, that he’d be off and on his way by 7 but here he is, buried under paperwork that he can’t put off.A second message comes through exactly eleven minutes after the first, and Tim feels his heart plummet as he reads her words. His chest feels tight and achy, and he fucking hates himself a little bit.
