Summary
Robert reaches his limit with Flambae’s temper when his work performance starts to threaten civilian lives. After the last incident, he owes a report that will end Flambae’s hero career.
At the end of his rope, Flambae is willing to try anything to stop the report, and prove to Robert that he’s capable of self control. So in a last ditch effort, Robert sets up a test that will challenge it: seven days of total, immediate, and non-negotiable obedience.
Flambae doesn’t realize what he’s signed up for from the seemingly quiet dispatcher.

And for all his piss-poor attributes, for all these flaws that made him less of a man to Flambae, he still somehow had the walking firestorm wrapped around his finger.

The first sign was the sound.
A hitch in the V8's rumble. Small, barely there. Robert felt it through the bench seat before he heard it, a vibration that didn't match the road. The engine caught briefly and Chad checked the dash and nothing flagged, the gauges holding steady.
Chad's hand tightened on the wheel.
The second sign was the shudder.
It came through the whole car, a tremor that started under the hood and traveled backward through the frame, rattling the rearview mirror and buzzing through the bench seat into Robert's spine. The engine note dropped and caught and dropped again, and the RPM needle twitched with it.
"No," Chad said quietly, not to Robert but to the car.
The Firebird shuddered harder and the engine coughed, flat and mechanical, and the speedometer began to slide, eighty down to seventy-five down to seventy.
"No no no no no—"
