Summary
Shane doesn’t realize he’s braced for silent eyes until he feels the absence of it — the weight of teammates immediately finding him and going quiet, waiting for him to fuck up, to say the wrong thing, to exist wrong. He expects the chatter of a room to drop when he enters and its disconcerting to find it doesn't yet in Ottawa.
He stands at the entrance a beat too long.

Summary
Paul can’t get over the sensation that there are two entirely separate sets of people in the same place. One set is their physical bodies in the room, where Ringo is talking and Paul is sitting on the bed and George is watching silently and John is looking crestfallen. The other set is just four beings of consciousness, trying to communicate like they used to, through thought and through imagined bars of music, notes snatched from the ether and knocked together, or stacked on top of each other, or spread out on the floor like old photographs.

Final installment of "Four Last Songs" - John's deathbed recollections.
This story is an AU. At this point in the story, it is so far off the original timeline that only one or two details would be considered "accurate," but that's to be expected.
This is not, by any means, what I "wished had happened." It's an exploration of how the Beatles' mythology would have been different had John not been the first to die.

For a second he wonders if he’s drunker than he thought, but no. As far as he can tell, it is still 1980, and he hasn’t seen or so much as spoken to John in ten years.
Or, John comes to stay with Paul in Scotland to ride out the press storm of his divorce to Yoko, and Paul learns to stop running away.
