Ryland looked down at his clipboard, where he had written a reasonable script, supplied earlier that day by Adrian. Unfortunately, the moment his eyes landed on the words, his brain supplied only terrible ways to say them.
He chose the worst one.
“I need flowers with prominent reproductive structures.”
The man went completely still.
Ryland could feel his soul attempting to leave his body.
“For a plant anatomy lab,” he added quickly. “For my students. Middle school students. Not–” He cut himself off, because there was simply no end to that sentence that would improve his situation. Instead, he just weakly smiled, and added “Science.”

Summary
They’re 8 months out from Erid when it happens. The Hail Mary doesn't exactly have any pre-programmed alerts for announcing the approach of what Rocky would later find out is a wormhole, but to her credit, the ship does try her best.
"Approaching anomaly detected."
Suddenly Rocky finds himself in a strange new space. It's much smaller than the Hail Mary, with strange metal walls and no life support. But to his surprise and delight, there's another human here! Only, they don't seem to be in space anymore. And the new human keeps treating Rocky like he's not real, which, rude. And the human seems so sad and scared, it reminds Rocky so much of when Grace admitted that their mission was a one-way trip. In fact, this new human reminds Rocky of Grace in a lot of ways.
Wait, did the human say something about radiation?!
That settles it. Rocky's getting this human out of here and back to Grace. There's no way he's letting anyone else die of radiation. Not on his watch.
He's going to save this human and they're both going to go home. Together.

Ch 45When I finished reading yesterday, I took a sneak peek at chapter 31 - as it was the latest chapter at the time - just to see if there was any Grace mention. If I just had picked the chapter right before 💀🙏 or hell if I just decided to give up on sleep and click next chapter Grace would have been right there 💀💀.
Anyways I'm loving this fic so far its actually great. A small part of me wants Simon to invite Ava to come live with them but that same part also knows it could never be 🥀.
Hey, so that was really mean. 😭😭😭😭 I was lulled into a false sense of security with all the cute courtship going on. I felt like Simon clicking the camera button and seeing the eel for the first time when I hit next chapter. Could have at least kissed the human crushing boulder you've sent my way.

Ch 20I am an absolute sucker for guessing games in a fic. My wallet would hate me if I could bet on this shit because I currently bet all my money on his wings matching Snowy Owls. It was my first thought and continues to be at currently chapter 10.
My rationale being how Stone is portrayed as being silent, stoic, and observing (+ bonus point for eyes probably big enough to be seen via his ear canal) and what other bird if not an owl?
My original hope was him having Peregrine Falcon wings (also right now as I googled said bird I noticed their wings look nothing like I had envisioned and could technically be a contender but probably not as I believe Stone's wings are white all over.) I just assume him to have some sort of bird of prey wings
Anyways guessing game over. I'm really enjoying the fic so far and I shed a little tear every time I get to a new chapter and see the numbers slowly building up to 19 🥀 I usually stay away from ongoing fics but this one gets a special little spot in my ao3 email inbox. (Ch 10 | 8:05am)
(also also as the creator of many (too many) OCs with wings... oils? grooming? yes, no, question?? 🧍(now I'm thinking about Stone molting and the possible wonders that could entail..)
