Summary
Sophie hears the report, but she’s staring at her patient. Nightwing, the fucking protector of Bludhaven, is the one struggling for breath in the ER bed. She hears the paramedic add, “he doesn’t want us to take off the mask,” as she hooks up the ECG leads and loops a blood pressure cuff around his arm. Somebody cuts his suit straight down the chest, baring it to the room.
A blood pressure that makes her stomach flip pops up on the monitor just as the doc starts discussing if they need to intubate. Somebody’s asking where x-ray is. ER techs are lined up outside the door, hovering in case they’re going to need compressions.

Summary
“You’re pale,” Jason continues, then jams his fingers into the side of Dick’s neck again. There’s a fifteen second pause. “Heart rate is through the roof. Are you sure you’re not bleeding anywhere?”
“Nope. My blood’s all on the inside for once,” Dick says.
And then they must come to the inevitable conclusion around the same time, because Jason says, “oh shit,” and Dick says, “get me to Leslie.”
They both went to the Bat School of Field Triage. It’s the loving term they use for Bruce’s four hundred and eighty-seven slide PowerPoint presentation on common field injuries and their treatments. Dick knows, even half out of his mind with chest pain and feeling like he can’t breathe, that just because there’s no blood on the outside of his body doesn’t mean there’s no bleeding.

For all of the chaos that had been around him moments ago, the sudden stillness left Dick reeling.
He swallowed roughly, feet planted firmly shoulder width apart with his arms loose by his sides. Those very same arms somehow still felt like he was holding a small body, his ears still listening out for the shallow breaths of the boy that had been whisked away into surgery.
Dick was alone now in that small bay, his brother’s blood slowly drying on his hands. He knew that he should move, he should clean himself up before the others arrived, but it was as though Dick was as still as the rest of the room had become. In all honesty, he wasn’t even sure if he was breathing himself, his focus locked on the mess of blood and gauze on the ground.
Damian’s blood.
That was Damian’s blood.

Summary
"Hey," Jason says, poking his head in through the door, making sure his body is angled so that there's no way the boy inside will be able to see Bruce.
That's as far as he gets before he falters.
The boy inside the dim-lit cell is tucked as far back into the corner of the cot as he can get, scrawny limbs wrapped around himself like the curled husk of a spider. His teal eyes are locked on Jason, but he doesn't move — not even a flinch.
He's as perfectly frozen as a bird in the brush as a hound sniffs closer.
Jason swallows, his throat abruptly so tight it's hard to breath. He's not sure either of them are.
The boy's eyes flick just a fraction past him, to the open cave beyond. One of them is surrounded by a dark bruise.
Jason steps cautiously into the cell, closing the door behind him, and watches his own eyes dim as his escape route closes.

“You should have known.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. My latent psychic abilities haven’t kicked in yet,” Dick said. Then, as if the possibility was just occurring to him: “You told someone you were coming, right?”
Tim made a noise, vague enough for Dick to interpret however he wanted.
“Hey,” the next tug on the blanket was sharper, as was Dick’s voice. When he got the blanket down enough to see Tim’s face, he raised an eyebrow, repeating, “You told someone you were coming, right?”
Or: Tim and Bruce have a fight. Tim does the only logical thing and goes to Dick about it.

The old lady had gotten a lucky shot in, he’d been distracted in banter about book clubs and seniors bowling as alternative hobbies to crime when he felt what he had at first thought was just a punch. The blade had still been there when he looked down, the old hag grinning maniacally as if proud of herself.
Dick swallowed roughly at the memory, his vision suddenly hazy. The pain wasn’t just a little bit of burning anymore, his whole body felt distinctly off the way it did after blood donations or more serious injuries. Like he was… Empty. His stomach clenched, as did his other muscles, and Dick felt ill, head spinning.

Dick Grayson turns 20 on March 20th, Jason Todd dies on April 27th, and by May 23rd, Bruce Wayne's ward-not-son is rattling around in the bed of a 1979 Ford F-150 heading anywhere but Gotham, New Jersey. Flying back to Cherry Street, weaving reckless in the dark, it comes down to this: Dick is the only one of his siblings that Jason has any real claim on. Dick is the only one of that whole mess of victims to Batman's cult of self-immolation who belongs to Jason. Even more than that - Dick is the only person in the world who he shares a parent with, who knows what it meant to be the Robin to Batman of nearly ten years ago.
It's just not the same anymore.

He should understand better than any of them how defective his relationship skills are. He has no right to pretend it isn’t true now that they can all hear it aloud. “But you hate yourself more for making us worse, which is—it’s fucked up, but we’re all fucked up, and it’s—it’s only partially your fault. You secretly wish you’d never met any of us, and you’d be right about it because now we hate ourselves, too.”
How can Bruce have the audacity to look heartbroken when he already knew all of this? Why is he pretending? Why does he keep lying?
(Dick is dosed with truth serum, and the effects will take at least a day to wear off. During that time, Dick is forced to reveal and confront truths about himself that he never wanted to acknowledge. )
