The first time Aventurine manages to drop off a half-melted custom .44 Magnum at their new technical director’s office, he’s almost surprised the indigo-haired man doesn’t even blink an eye.
“In the ‘scrap’ bin, please,” Ratio says nonchalantly as he flicks through what is — presumably — a blueprint for his next project.
Aventurine can’t help himself. “Aw, you made a bin just for me?”
Aventurine may have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, but hey, he's always fine in the end. The same can't be said for the gadgets his tech director gives him, though... and that may be a bit of a problem for Ratio.
(Or, 5 times Aventurine fails to return Ratio’s equipment unscathed, and 1 time he doesn’t.)

He knew the extremities of misery. He was used to despair; of formless and opaque days, stretching out into empty weeks, months, years. He knew what pain was; all the scars it leaves, deep into the skin, the soul. He knew what hunger tasted like, what helplessness did to the mind, what it felt like to hold a gun to his own temple in games of chance, secretly wishing his luck would fade and give him an ending.
He was in pain, but this pain was a thing shaped like hope. Back then in the dark days of his past, he didn't know when it would end, and what that end would bring him. But he knew roughly when this would end, and he knew what it would bring – a child, his child, the daughter who was both parts of Ratio and Aventurine's souls.
She was growing, and Aventurine's heart grew with her.
A new member of their family arrives.

“Yeesh, tough crowd today, huh?” Kafka hums, leaning in closer towards Himeko. “Don't worry, I like when they play hard to get. It's a fun challenge.”
Himeko furrows her brows, a frown beginning to form. “Have you resorted to kidnapping children in your attempts to woo me?”

Kafka's incessant charm and embarrassing pickup lines don't seem to be working on Himeko. Luckily, Kafka has another trick up her sleeve—bringing her daughter, Stelle, to Himeko's café.

“Ah yes, excellent choice to satisfy a sweet craving,” Veritas comments as he scoops up the slices, smiling as the chocolate cake is no longer whole.
“No no, it's not for me. I don't like sweets,” Aventurine says.

Summary
Aventurine nods, curiously waiting for Ratio to elaborate. Is Ratio planning to read to him? That is the sort of activity Ratio would consider leisurely, albeit rather mundane. Still, Aventurine muses, Ratio does have a pleasant voice, so it wouldn't be so bad.
With a determined nod, Ratio extends his hand expectantly, the other hovering over the book he had placed on the ladder earlier. After a moment's hesitation, Aventurine accepts.
As Ratio's hand touches the book, Aventurine feels a sudden lurch, and that's all the warning he gets before they're falling.
