    Shane has always known that he's different. Bad different too, because kids are cruel in their honesty, especially when you're as talented as Shane is. He even makes peace with it (or pretends to). Alone at the top.

    And then Ilya Rozanov happens. A natural disaster that enchants Shane from the first minute of the first tape. Lightning in a bottle let loose on the ice, and he's so beautiful that Shane wants to cry.

    When they meet for the first time, it's like seeing the sun for the first time, and neither can fight their gravity during draft. Their meeting in the gym changes everything - because Shane is not alone in his obsession, and Ilya never knew how to back down. First names are maybe a lot less scary when you're barely 18 and already halfway in love.

    “Have you talked to her about it?”

    Shane shook his head but otherwise didn’t make a sound.

    Hayden set his beer down and used the hand that held the beer to rub his face as if that would give him some extra clarity to the situation.

    “Do you want it to be more? It’s ok to want more, you know? Maybe she wants the same.”

    Shane shook his head again. “Maybe. Yes. I don’t know. But I can’t.” He felt so stupid not knowing his own thoughts. Everything was starting to feel closed in again. It was getting harder for him to breathe.

    Shane spirals after Rozanov calls him baby for the first time and gets love and support from the friend he knows he can count on. (And comes out on his own without needing Rose Landry.)

    He heard the rustle of fabric as Ilya settled onto the far end of the couch, claiming his territory with his infuriating, unspoken intensity.

    "We sleep in same place no matter what," Ilya murmured, the low, steady vibration of his voice hitting Shane somewhere deep. "So stay put or I follow you around home".
