Nikki crept through the dimly lit room with a wary posture, her gun held close to her chest as it pulsed with a steady purple light. She didn’t dare breathe as she searched for her enemy amongst the smoke and random structures. A laugh echoed in her ear and she whipped around, hair damp and smelling sickly sweet from the chemicals in the air as she searched for the origin of the noise.
Something moved and the woman shot into the darkness, her gun going off with a loud whip-like sound that made her wince, but she kept moving. She couldn’t lose. Not now, after she’d come so far for this.
Her heart was in her throat as she scanned the space, tentatively walking down a ramp onto the lower levels. The visibility was worse here, but if she couldn’t see them, they couldn’t see her.

“Eat your food.” It whispered around him. Sam looked down at the plate, staring at the dead cat with small black flowers unfurling out of its chest.
“I can’t.” He nudged the cat’s ear with his fork.Dead eyes stared back at him.
“Why?” It sneered, looking over his shoulder at the plate. “Not good enough for you?” Sam shook his head.
“It’s cold.” It hummed affirmatively.“I’ll have to get you a new plate then.” It left without leaving, having a presence in the room just as potent in It’s absence as when It came back.
A new plate took the old one’s place, the body much fresher and still leaking vines of blood.
“Thank you.” He whispered. It smiled. It always liked when he was polite.“You’re welcome. Now go do what I told you.”
Sam nodded, because what else could he do?
It stabbed a vine through his throat.
