    Shane wants to figure out if he's gay before he gets drafted—and no, the way he felt when Ilya Rozanov smirked at him with a cigarette between his lips in Saskatchewan has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, the random guy he hooks up with to try and make sure one way or another takes a picture, and Shane gets outed before the draft. In the ensuing scandal, he goes seventh overall, to Ottawa.

    It turns out, having the worst thing you can think of happen to you when you're seventeen years old can end up being pretty liberating. And land you an unexpected best friend.

    Over the next few days, the peacocking escalated into what Shane could only describe as psychosexual community theatre.

    Hayden leaned in close and said, with the deep satisfaction of a man watching a carefully nurtured fire take down an entire forest, "This is the best week of my life."

    "No, I’m serious," Marc insisted. "Was this tactical? Did we have an asset in Ottawa and nobody told me?"

    Shane looked at him with withering disgust. "Yes, Marc. I seduced a top-line center for intelligence purposes. I endured world-class cheekbones and an overdeveloped sense of possessiveness and got dicked down in service of the franchise."

    Shane straightened instinctively. He and Ilya were both sponsored by CCM, they had been for years. Would CCM pull their sponsorships now that they were publicly out? Would they only want to keep working with one of them now that they were married and would be playing on the Centaurs together this season?

    “They want you two for a new ad campaign,” she continued, eyes sparkling. “A twelve-year retrospective referencing the one you shot together the summer before your rookie year.”
