    They used to swap places all the time as kids. At school, at the playground, at practice. For fun. It had been easy then—like a quick changing of jerseys between periods. That was before the invisible fork in the road that had inexplicably parted them in their teens. It's been over a decade since they’ve done this bit. And Shane doesn’t want to do it. Not because he can’t do it but because he is so, so tired of playing clean-up crew for Henry’s fuckups.

    Shane hesitates, jaw tightening. Then he slowly exhales through his nose.
    “Do you. Still have. The clip-ons.” Shane grits out.

    In another timeline, Shane and Ilya hook up in room 1410, nothing goes wrong, and everything plays out exactly as we know it.

    In this one, Yuna Hollander walks in before Ilya can leave—and the seven-year situationship never gets the chance to start. Instead, through the power of miscommunication, Shane and Ilya start dating in 2010. With better support, they make better decisions. Their rivalry fizzles out before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced instead by a beloved “bromance". In 2015, they come out to the NHL and the world.

    No one believes them.

     

    Or: Somehow, despite Shane and Ilya being out for two years, Scott Hunter is still considered the first openly gay player in the NHL, much to Ilya’s horror.

    Shane Hollander has a new hobby: he is obsessed with trying to understand the murders of all these hockey players. It's a great distraction from the backlash after he came out. And he has to admit that he's not really that upset that the greatest homophobes in the league start to disappear one by one.
    But then it all comes crashing down when Ilya goes missing. Suddenly Shane is racing against the clock to find out who the killer really is in time to save the love of his life.
