“Oh, now he’s mad,” Xiaoshi mutters to himself.
Lu Guang almost glares at him, but he can never find it in his heart to be genuinely upset with his partner. “I’m starting to think that you have a type that you’re into older men.”
“What?!” Xiaoshi splutters noisily at him, twisting until he’s sat up, rigid in the corner of the opposite end of the couch, gawking in offense at the white-haired man.
Lu Guang gives him a cool look. “You’re the one who keeps bringing it up,” he reminds, as he gets up and heads to the stairs, taking his book with him to finish it in peace.
“Hey! I’m not done talking to you!” Xiaoshi pouts at him. “You can’t hold me in your arms every other night and then pretend that you don’t like me!” he shouts after him. He grits his teeth a little bit as he’s basically ignored, Lu Guang doesn’t say anything, other than emit a quiet scoff as he vanishes up the stairs.

When he walks back to the table, Derek’s out of his seat before he can think better of it. He’s going to ask him out. He’s going to go over there, he’s not going to say the man has a mouth he’ll dream about or give any cheesy, half-assed pick-up line, and he’s going to ask him if he would like to get coffee some time. Maybe he’ll skip that and go straight for dinner, or the bookstore. Derek’s heard you can learn a lot about a person by what they read.
He’s cool. He can do this.
“Hi,” he says, eyes flickering down to the glossy pamphlets of houses for sale that litter the table, and when panic overtakes him, what comes out of his mouth isn’t any of those things. “I’m thinking about buying a new place. Are you an agent?”

Stiles should be happy.
He should be happy, he should be fucking delighted—there’s a bottle of champange being uncorked, hands being shaken, a too-hearty clap on his back that jolts him forward and causes him to stumble slightly. But the space in his chest that usually burns with the high of a closed deal is hollow, empty, and the twinkling gold Christmas lights one of the secretaries had hung in the office mock him, a depressing reminder that he’s about to be alone for the holidays.
It feels like I don’t know you anymore, was the last thing Derek had muttered to him, standing in the threshold of what had been their apartment, backpack slung over one shoulder and duffle bag strap clenched in his fist. I can’t do this.

“One spiced hazelnut mocha for the dude with the impressive eyebrows and cute scarf,” he says, handing Derek the cup instead of putting it down on the counter like all the baristas do. Their fingers brush gently, and Derek takes far too long to take the cup from Stiles, their eyes meeting.
Ask him for his number, his brain supplies in a voice which sounds scarily like his sister’s. Stiles raises his eyebrows, their eyes still locked and both still holding the cup.
The second Derek opens his mouth, the moment is broken by one of the other baristas shouting, “Stiles! We could all use a little help here considering we have a line going out the door.”
Stiles pulls his hand away as if he’s been burned, giving Derek a sheepish smile before he turns to get back to work.
Derek heads out past the line of irritated customers, ignoring the dirty looks he’s being given while he curses himself inwardly. Idiot. That voice sounds like his other sister.

He gently placed the crystal down. “I am far beneath you.”
Stiles’ face pinched up in revulsion at such words. “That’s not true.”
“You’re the Duke of Beacon, and I am a recently appointed mine baron,” Derek tiredly answered. “My hands will never be clean enough for you.”

Stiles starts thinking about dropping out of college days before the end of his junior year. He's always wanted to be in law enforcement like his dad, but after spending so many years watching his friends die from the supernatural and being exposed to the worst of humanity through his internship program, he just—can't.
Derek's been on the fringes of the McCall pack since he returned to Beacon Hills. He doesn't feel comfortable there, he doesn't feel comfortable when he's gone—so he spends most of his time alone, helps out Scott when he needs is, and for some reason, answers every text message Stiles sends him.
A year of FaceTime and phone calls don't prepare him, however, for Stiles tossing a duffle bag on his bed in mid-July while he talks about the awesome road trip he has planned for them. Derek doesn't remember agreeing, but he does know this: where Stiles goes, he'll follow.

Sometimes he thinks it hasn’t been long, but whenever he tries to think about it, he … forgets. He told Kate once, when she came out to the garden late one night and let a fox tumble from her hands onto the ground, and she’d patted his cheek and told him that merpeople weren’t known for anything but looking pretty, so she wasn’t surprised to hear he didn’t have many thoughts in his head.
Sometimes it bothers him, that he can remember every day he’s been in the pond but nothing before, but if he thinks about it for too long he forgets that, too.
