Reki paused in the middle of eating his birthday cake, mouth hung open causing crumbs to fall. The fork hovered uselessly before his lips as he tried to gauge Langa’s expression. Anything that indicated he was only joking.
But no, Langa was looking very dead serious right now.
“WHAT?”
“What?”
“What do you mean by that???”
“I mean exactly that. We should get married,” answered Langa nonchalantly, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Why is this happening to him? What did he do to deserve such a sorry title?
“I don’t know. You’re so you man, so Reki, people probably can’t handle that.”If Reki tenses, his friend doesn’t mention it. If his face contorts multiple times to the point where it’s so unlike Reki to wear an expression like that on his face, his friend doesn’t notice it. Because it’s just so Reki to hide himself so well, build walls so carefully around himself that nobody stops and thinks that someone like him is just so miserable.
“Yeah I guess you’re right,” Reki laughs but it sounds like a dying animal, “I’m just too Reki.”

Reki couldn’t go back to normal and Reki couldn’t forget and Reki couldn’t do anything without feeling like his insides were going to shred themselves to pieces, rebuild, and do it all over again. His knee bounced and his lips tightened and his whole entire body filled with heavy guilt as Langa excitedly pointed out the details from the video that he’d missed.
Langa’s victory was a week ago, and that entire time Reki had been too terrified of messing up their friendship to apologize. He never said sorry to Langa for abandoning him or saying the hurtful things he’d said or being the worst friend in the world.
In which Reki builds up the courage to apologize for Langa for basically running away from him, and then gets everything he's ever wished for.

Langa watched him with wide eyes. “I thought maybe we could go to the mountains? It’s not far away, I often went there with my parents when I was a kid. It could be fun, right?”
“Uh, for a hike? I don’t know, Reki, I think it’s too–”
“No, not for hiking, no,” Reki interrupted. “It’s more like a hill, actually, and there’s a nice lake and meadows...” he trailed off.
“Okay? I think I’m lost, Reki,” said Langa. The other boy’s face twisted in frustration.
“Why is this so hard?” he groaned. “I just thought we could go on a picnic or whatever, you know? If you want.” He finished in one breath.
