When he does recover enough to be conscious of his surroundings, he continues falling apart and repeatedly tries to leave this mortal coil only to be always found and stopped by Martin. At some point Martin isn't there and he actually almost succeeds, only to have the Eye inform him of something that changes his mind.

Summary
Jonathan Sims was captured by the capital months ago as bait for Martin Blackwood, the leader of the anarcho-communist faction of the resistance. Soon after, the faction was blown up and everyone presumably died. Jon, no longer needed as bait, was made into an unwilling muttation of the capital to be used in interrogation. He's been living a life of despairing hopelessness. Now there's a new prisoner, Peeta Mellark, and Jon feels the urge to protect him because he reminds him of a younger Martin.
Meanwhile Martin (who happened to survive because he was out searching for food during the destruction of the faction) runs into Katniss in the woods. After hearing that Coin hasn't captured Jon in district 13, he and Katniss make a plan to team up together and with Finnick to go to the capital on a rescue mission for Martin, Peeta, and Annie. Katniss was followed by Gale against her knowledge and they are joined by some others along the way.

The Magnus Archive crew are all Honduran Tent Bats, little white cotton balls with yellow and black wings and yellow ears and noses that live in leaves. Elias had to go and ruin everything by buying up all the trees in the area with his on again/off again divorce, Peter, and selling them to developers. (Where'd he get the money? How? Beats me.) Regardless, now all the bats in the forest need to provide deeds to able to live in the leaves they used to just chew and nestle into. Tim, Sasha, Martin, and Jon run the parcel mapping GIS division of the Magnus Institute (which is literally just that - Elias formed it for this express purpose) but they know basically nothing about their jobs. It's a wreck.

Jonathan Sims is a Bat Selkie, otherwise known as a selkie but a bat instead of a seal. Elias finds him bathing in human form one night and decides that Jon is *his* (what a creep, right?!?) so he steals his pelt and has Peter hide it in the Lonely.
Two months later Jon works at Elias' Archive with his colleagues Sasha, Tim, and Martin, all friends who immediately do their best to draw him into their group and Martin instantly becomes smitten by the quirky man who just joined the archive. The only problem? Jon doesn't really know how to be human... he only knows how to be a bat. It's a real learning-curve and he's miserable because he misses his bat self.
Oh yah, and then there's creepy stalker-boss Elias who doesn't want Jon to find his pelt or have anyone else but him. Not that Jon really understands - he only understands bat advances. Martin, however, does and he is not happy.
