Summary
Zuko tries.
Agni, he tries. Uncle wants so desperately for him to do the right thing, and he wants to, he does, he does, he does-
So when the Water Tribe girl looks at him with wild eyes, begging for help, and Azula raises one eyebrow with a sneer, Zuko chooses.
Azula’s scream of anger when he blasts a fireball in her direction is almost worth the twenty Dai Li agents that immediately surround him.
(or: Zuko is taken prisoner by Azula in the catacombs. Turns out, being kept miles away from the sun isn't so great for your bending.)

Summary
Shadia knows in theory that Azune has been to war, but knowing is very different from understanding. Her father went to war, once. He doesn't talk about it. Not really, not to her and or to Alogar either, except in that sideways way that he sometimes talks about dangerous things; telling fantastical stories about something else entirely and letting you read between the lines. Which means Azune has lived something her father thinks that even telling her about is too risky, and Shadia cannot understand.
(In which Hal's children also love each other, all of them, including the one Uncle Thjazi left on dad's doorstep one day without any warning.
...Or: Azune spends a year with the Fang-Lloy-D'vyen family.)

“I don’t just want to ask one, I want to—gh—do you know how a conversation works?”
“You want to get to know me?” Julien says with horror.
— On the road to the Golden Orchard, after the second-worst week of their lives, Occtis and Julien play stupid games.

Summary
"Are you high?" A voice — Bolaire asks, and it startles him somewhat, he had expected to be left alone.
He hums distractedly instead forcing himself to draw even breaths through his nose in hopes of staving off the nausea rising in his throat, the churning in his stomach. He should probably eat something. Or is that a bad idea too?
Suddenly a hand grips the collar of his tunic and he is heaved up. His eyes fly open and struggle to focus on the piercing blue glow, the ridges in a white mask.
Bolaire's voice is ice cold. "What did you take?"
What? Julien snarls clumsily, pawing at the hand. The world blurs for a moment. "Get — off 'f me—"
"Julien," the world reverberates dangerously in his skull, threatening to snap bone. Bolaire's eyes pierce through him witnessing the very bottom of his rotten soul. "I saw you take three shots of yahrgraz, I need to know if you are about to die. What the fuck did you take."
———
Or,Julien unwinds at one of Bolaire's parties and accidently goes too far.
