Summary
“Come through here,” Halandil Fang says, gesturing him into the house.
It is odd, but nice. He looks very much like Thjazi. He does not sound, or move, like Thjazi at all. Similar enough to be comfortable and apart enough not to tug rough stitches in Azune’s heart loose again, ones that he had to put there now the Banner are all to be separated. Halandil moves with an elegant lethargy that Azune associates with the older soldiers he’s known, a certain economy of movement. Gentler than the old soldiers, of course. A bit more flourish maybe. That too.
(In which Hal loves all his children, including the one that Thjazi posted to his doorstep one day without any warning.)

Summary
In which it is a truth universally acknowledged that Azune Nayar is bad at self-preservation but good at taking orders, and over the years many of the people who hold him dear have used the second fact to their advantage.
*
That seems to be the end of the conversation as far as Azune is concerned, but isn't for Hal. He cannot sit peaceful with the idea that a momentary careless gesture on his part could have Azune walking into the fire, figuratively or... not.
"Not exactly what I am used to," Hal tries. "You've met my children, my family, and I work with actors. Any person I have tried to give an instruction to in my entire life has argued back."
"I will not do that," Azune promises, like it's nothing. Given the circumstances, it is one of the least reassuring things Hal has ever heard.

Summary
In which Demodus Blix has a terrible no-good very bad day (and also a new crush, but that's none of your damn business), Azune Nayar has moments of unpleasant introspection followed by moments of reassuring conversation, and Murray Mag'nesson wonders if they are going to get out of this sewer anytime soon (because she is an inch away from murdering at least one of her two favourite ex-students).
Now with an unplanned epilogue in which Azune gets a man fired, and Demodus should not find that as endearing as he does.

Summary
Shadia knows in theory that Azune has been to war, but knowing is very different from understanding. Her father went to war, once. He doesn't talk about it. Not really, not to her and or to Alogar either, except in that sideways way that he sometimes talks about dangerous things; telling fantastical stories about something else entirely and letting you read between the lines. Which means Azune has lived something her father thinks that even telling her about is too risky, and Shadia cannot understand.
(In which Hal's children also love each other, all of them, including the one Uncle Thjazi left on dad's doorstep one day without any warning.
...Or: Azune spends a year with the Fang-Lloy-D'vyen family.)

Summary
As the notable and the wealthy flood in from the main Gala to see what all the commotion is about, the Halovar lay their final pieces and if nothing else, they demonstrate that Wicander probably came by his love of stagecraft honestly. They’ve outdone themselves; the grand and ridiculous mimicry in the centre of the room is exactly what the elite of a city that hasn’t known gods for a generation would think resurrection looks like. The fight is not done. It has just changed shape. There is a lot they need to do, and quickly. His friends will point him where he needs to go. He can let the details come to him later, he can sift through the events and decide what’s important to know more about later. For now, he can just do.
For now he just does, and that is why it is only much later that he realises it’s possible none of them were close enough to hear the words that passed between him and Mayali. She was cradled so close, they did not need to say anything loud.
That is why it is only much later he realises he might have to explain, to three people in particular.

Summary
In which Azune the-man-that-is tries to protect what remains of Azune the-boy-that-was, the reverse might also be true, and for someone who doesn't expect to be rescued he sure does have a lot of people lining up to try and do just that.
ch iii
It does not occur to Azune until nearly the end of their gathering that Murray leaving out where they mean to send Demodus was an intentional omission, rather than just a case of information being lost in the mix of so many other things to keep track of. As soon as he does realise it, he also realises it is obvious, and keeps quiet accordingly. She has made it very clear where Demodus stands in her priorities, and Azune has no doubt that but for the fluke of him being there when she spoke to King Augustus she would prefer neither he nor the others present knew either. He can’t fix that, but he can stay quiet.
