“Theo? Can you tell me what’s wrong?”

“He didn’t come home.” He stutters his way through the sentence, like it’s the scariest thing he’s ever said. Like he’s forcing himself to say it but doesn’t understand why it’s so scary, just that it is. Josh frowns at the screen in response. Tentatively types, possibly abandoned.

Jesus. What the hell is wrong with people these days?

“Who didn’t come home, Theo? Your dad?”

Theo, 5. Child in distress. Possibly abandoned.

The radio crackles with acknowledgment as Theo exhales shakily. It’s wet, like he’s building up all the courage his little body has to offer. “My Buck.”

    --

Or, Theo calls 9-1-1 because Buck doesn't come home after he gets hurt on a shift.

    Harris: Hi, Shane!
    Harris: This is Harris Drover.
Harris: I got your number from Ilya.
Harris: Sorry to bother you, but I had a question.
Harris: I know you’re coming in to sign contracts tomorrow, and I had an idea for a social media thing to announce your signing, if you’d be up for it?

    Shane: Oh, yeah, okay.
Shane: I’ll be there, so we can do whatever.
Shane: Always happy to help the team with a little internet humiliation that’ll be around for decades.

    Harris: Perfect!
Harris: I promise, I think you’ll really like this, though.
    Harris: No humiliation involved.
Harris: The only caveat is, you can’t tell Ilya.

    Shane: Okay?
    Shane: Why?

    Harris: Well.
    Harris: Here’s what I’m thinking.

    Summary

Things like this didn't happen to other people; Shane knew that. He’d been alive long enough to experience the confused glances and exasperated scoffs that always accompanied his discomfort with things other people didn't even notice. He would not fuck this up – not because he couldn't handle the way the sheets touched his skin. The burning of his skin spread to his eyes as his vision blurred. He squeezed his eyes shut and scrubbed his hands over his face. He would not cry.

The tears fell hot and silent. They pooled at the curve of his jaw and around his chin, puddles of shame and self-contempt. Fucking breathe, he told himself, as he turned the faucet of the shower as far as it could go.

He stood watching the water pool around his feet and slip down the drain until he heard Ilya stir. At first, he wasn't sure if he had really heard his name.

    “Shane?… Shane?”

He wanted to yell back, assure Ilya everything was fine, but when he opened his mouth, only a squeak escaped.

    “Moya lyubov?”

He cleared his throat and tried again: “In here.”

    Summary

Everybody thinks hockey players are stupid. Having an accent certainly doesn’t help.

Ilya Rozanov never bothered correcting people, but it wasn’t his job to fit their expectations either.
He wasn’t hiding it, it just wasn’t important, and he wasn’t the type to show off (oh, Shane would laugh at that, but for this specific aspect it was true).

It just never came up. Until it did.
