“Am not!” Charles practically squawks, fingers freezing in their fidgeting and curling into fists by his sides. He squeezes each fist a few times, eyes glued to his loafers. “Just hard to know what to wear, innit.”
The office is silent for a few moments, besides the low squeaking of the office chair as Edwin readjusts in it.
“Let me help you?”
And there’s the kicker.

Loving Edwin was the easiest thing in the world. Charles got so used to it that he could sometimes go months without thinking about it, until Edwin did something kind or charming or literally just stood there catching the light in exactly the right way, and it would hit Charles all over again, like getting socked in the face. It certainly made for some interesting decades together.
Or: Charles falls first. Edwin falls harder. Surprisingly little changes.

Charles Rowland fell in love nearly thirty years ago.
Edwin wasn’t the first lad Charles had feelings for. There had been some proper fit guys on the football team his dad watched, and a guy named Tom a few years ahead of him in secondary school that Charles had been obsessed with; even before he knew what words to put to it. He liked girls, too, of course, and that was easier. A pretty smile and a flutter of his dark eyelashes and maybe a clever line or two and they’d be all over him for a fun time. Charles loved a good snog with a pretty girl, but he hadn't really, concretely, considered the option of another boy until Edwin.
Edwin, with his tiny pleased smiles and his perfect posh posture and his impossibly sharp wit. His hands were long and narrow, with uncalloused knuckles and soft palms, even in death. Edwin, who was kind and gentle even when he had no reason to be; who sat by a dying boy and read him stories and made that musty attic feel warm again, even for just a bit.

Summary
Buck is a damn good firefighter.
He knows every piece of equipment and what it does back to front, he’s able to get dressed in under thirty seconds, and his overall response time is pretty damn quick, in his eyes. He’s aced every test he’s done for the academy, even when he had to get cleared for duty multiple times, and he’s read the manuals backward and forward more times than he cares to admit.
He’s put blood, sweat and tears into this job. He loves nothing more than being a firefighter. His concern is never about himself on the job. He knows he’s capable and he knows even if something were to happen, he would be alright. He can handle the strain of the job. He’s nearly died several times and has actually died once, after all. If getting struck by lightning hasn’t scared him away from the job, nothing will.
Buck’s a damn good firefighter, except when it comes to his loved ones getting hurt.
That’s the one thing he can’t handle.
