Summary
The room moves around him, nurses in and out to check on his progress and remove his IV. A new doctor comes in with discharge papers, instructions about PT that Hollander studiously writes down. Ilya lets himself be moved and nods when it seems appropriate. But he hears none of it. The blood rushes through his ears and one word echoes in his chest over and over again. Husband.
In 2025, Ilya suffers a hit on the ice and wakes up in the hospital. Shane Hollander is there, holding his hand. But the last thing Ilya remembers is a tuna melt (aaaaaaand Rose Landry).

Summary
Shane knew injuries in hockey were a given. The collisions, the bruises, the occasional concussion. All a given part of the game and a, somewhat, welcome trade-off to the game he had dedicated his entire life to.
The broken forearm though? That was hell, something he nor Ilya were prepared for, especially heading into Ottawa's second run at a Stanley Cup. Yes, Ottawa. The Centaurs had welcomed him in with open arms after being outed, unlike Montreal, one of whom had just ended his season with a brutal hit and fall. But again, always a possibility in the game of hockey and how Shane found himself stuck at the cottage for the foreseeable future.
A trade-off of hockey he didn't expect? Intruders knowing where he lived. Four of them. In his living room.
Shane finds himself alone with these intruders while his husband is on the road for the playoffs. How long can he hold his own before help arrives?

And yeah, Shane knew that Ilya hadn’t been okay last time he was in Russia, but Ilya had had the very real excuse of a funeral to blame things on. Ilya had downplayed it as much as he could, and Shane hadn’t been there, he’d heard the fatigue and he’d seen Ilya’s tired smile, but he hadn’t felt the way Ilya’s hands were cold the entire time he was there, hadn’t seen through the screen the way Ilya dropped eight pounds in three weeks, hadn’t kept time when there were twenty hours in Ilya’s day instead of something closer to sixteen. Or, on the flip side, for the week or two after, when there had been approximately ten conscious hours in a day.
It was one thing to see something. It was another to feel it in your hands.
Ilya and Shane are so, so happy for their first year married. They’re playing in Ottawa together, they’re fucking winning, they’re together and out.
So now, after a year, Ilya should be fine. He should be great. He should not be flinching at small noises or nearly punching people off the clock or feeling like he’s drowning whenever he’s not on the ice.
