The carpet has a very slight discoloration here where the rich, dark green is beginning to fade to something a shade paler: overuse from the room’s only resident and his band of loser friends. Richie and Bill are the only ones with game systems at home which make them the automatic hosts any time the seven of them all want to hang out.
Today it’s just Eddie and Richie. Most days it’s just Eddie and Richie. Eddie’s okay with that; he thinks Richie is too.

A twist on the tale.
When the school's shoe-in for Prom Queen plans for Eddie to be her Laney Boggs, he bolts for the nearest escape route, also known as his best and most loyal friend, Richie Tozier. Richie doesn't blame him; everyone within a foot can see he'd swing another bat at Demon Clown 2.0 to kiss Eddie K.
Maybe that's why he suggests the whole fake-boyfriend thing.

“Richie, it’s me,” Eddie cuts in. He’s whispering into the receiver, and it sounds all crunchy in Richie’s ears, but it’s the prettiest thing no matter what. “Asshole. I’m not selling Girl Scout cookies.”
Richie smiles all dopey like he always does and plops himself in the chair next to the phone, curling the wire around his finger. “What’re you doing up, Eds?”

“Is this—fun summer—“ Richie chokes around the words, voice strangled, mangled, ruined. He clears his throat, trying to dislodge the frog in it, and slurps messily at his water, all but drenching his chin. He feels like he’s drowning now. “I don’t stalk lifeguards,” he says.
Eddie tilts his head, almost a challenge, and says, tone unreadable, “Really.”

Bev leaves one on Richie’s bedroom door, the fridge, on the carton of orange juice, and the mirror in their shared bathroom. It’s an archaic mode of communication, and she’s not even sure if he’ll see them—Richie has a habit of just not seeing things he doesn’t want to—but Richie’s phone is almost always dead or on Do Not Disturb and it’s the only way the message will get across.

Eddie loves his job, he really does. Even with all the shit a group of twenty-six ten year-olds can throw at him, he still loves what he does. Really, the parents are far worse than the kids, too many of them fitting the stereotypical mold of what an obnoxious LA parent is. He rarely interacts with them face-to-face, most discussion passing through the middlemen of their nannies and drivers, or via incessant emails about their uniquely-named child’s dietary restrictions. His actual students aren’t even the cause for at least half of the issues that plague him as a teacher at a private Los Angeles elementary school. Most of them are well-mannered, capable, socially aware kids, if not a little spoiled thanks to their environment.
But then there’s Little Miss Peggy Tozier.

So there was that reason that work wasn’t boring, too. There was Richie’s soppy campaign of making cow eyes at the back of Eddie’s head as he passed, gently pressing Betty for details about his personal life (“I don’t think he has one. He had this awful fiancé a few years ago, but we’re all glad that’s over”), and chasing the incomparable high of a quiet, muttered “Thanks, Rich” whenever Richie picks something up for him from the copier.
Richie is a wannabe stand-up comic daylighting as the receptionist at Eddie's office. Eddie is a tightly-wound corporate asshole. They are both disasters. Or: five times Richie watched Eddie and one that Eddie watched him back.
