“Did you actually know him, or are you just making this up?” some random kid Mana doesn’t know the name of, and doesn’t care to know, asks.
Mana pulls up a new slide. Her eighth grade class photo, with two red circles over it. One over her, one over Dr Grace. The time and date is underlined on the bottom of the photo.
“He held a few classes about the Petrova problem as it was introduced. He knew about as much as the rest of the world, and he still made a point to try to help educate us,” Mana says. “He encouraged me to enjoy science, and after he left, I could have stopped. But he told me once, ‘just try’, and while it seems like not much, it still impacts me to this day.”
or, ryland grace was once mana's teacher. now she works with astrophage just like he did.

First in what is probably going to be a series of PHM one-shots. Is this out of character for Grace? Almost certainly. Do I care? Not really, I just couldn't get this idea out of my head. I've also been putting Grace through the ringer elsewhere and wanted to give him a moment to be a confident little diva taunting the allos with his intense hotness that they'll never get to touch.
Grace is dragged to the common room on Stratt's vat and given a dare; little do the others know it's gonna take more than that to scare a middle school teacher!

“Dr. Grace? As in the Dr. Grace who studied the Arclight samples and named Astrophage?" Minoru felt as if he was going to explode from excitement, “He’s here? On this boat?!”
Ilyukhina laughed and Minoru didn’t even care that she was making fun of him. Even Dubois seemed a little taken aback by the enthusiasm. Shapiro though— her eyes were glowing.
“Yes he’s on the boat!”
“Do you think we’ll get to meet him?!”
“Who do you think is going to teach us how to handle Astrophage?” Dubois asked, like he thought they were both overreacting. Minoru felt like he was going to faint.
