The protector came back with someone dragging behind them and Techno frowned when they were all but thrown in his direction, challengers were usually volunteers, it was bad form to force someone.The pup seemed equally confused as he stared back at his retreating pod and Techno felt his heart drop when the pup spun around to face him and he realized the mer was blind. His pod was gone, Techno realized this was less of a challenge and more a straight up sacrifice.
Tommy's pod invades the SBI's territory, when Techno comes to challenge them they decide to just throw Tommy to the wolves... mermaids.

“How dare you do this? He’s just a kid, Dream!” Techno shouts and it reverberates through the glass. He feels it deep inside of himself, it’s gross and cheesy to say, but he feels it in his soul. Something about his words, about his anger, resonates with his heart, with him. “I don’t know what messed with you to make you think this is okay but it’s not! My family are not collections, they’re my family. What have you done?”

Tommy, despite being a merfolk, has never seen or visited the sea. He's always been stuck in his tank where Dream shows him among his friends and coworkers. One day, he brings Technoblade over, who upon seeing him, immediately frees him and offers to show him the world he's been kept from.

"Dad! Look!" Tommy shouted in glee, picking up the perfect shell for the center of his necklace.
It was a beautiful pink fan-shaped shell that was small enough that he should be able to put it on his necklace. It even had a small hole in it already, like it was designed for Tommy to put on his necklace.
It was perfect to represent his dad on his necklace.
