“So, Teach, when did you first realize you were nonbinary?” Claude asked, lounging casually across two chairs in the classroom. They were doing a private lesson on tactics but Claude was hardly focused on the task at hand. He didn’t really need the lesson, it was just an excuse to chat with his dear professor. It seemed like they picked up on that pretty quickly at least.
Byleth’s only tilted their head to the side like they didn’t understand.
“You know, when did you realize you weren’t a man or a woman?” Claude continued.
Byleth nodded slightly to indicate that they now understood. “Never,” they answered.
Claude sat up, more interested than before. He was used to these kinds of responses from the professor. The way they were always able to surprise him was one of the things he loved about them. “Never? You weren’t born a man or a woman, or at least told you were one?” He clarified.
Byleth shook their head. “Dad said I was born ambiguous, and he handled the talking to people for most of my life. It never really came up.”
“Huh, that must’ve been nice. When did you first realize you were different then?”
Byleth thought about it for a moment, tilting their head the opposite way. “It was when my breasts started to come in. Men in some of the places we would frequent would make strange comments, but by then I could wield a sword so it wasn’t hard to make them stop.”
Claude laughed. “Now that I would pay to see.”
