Theo stuck his lip out and pouted at Buck and Tommy. "Can I help cook?"
"You want to bake something with both of us?" Buck asked, excited and thrilled at the thought of teaching their son in the kitchen.
Theo nodded his head and threw his hand up in the air. "Please!" he shouted.
"So polite. Of course we can bake with you," Tommy promised. "Let's look at the recipe book and make the decision together, okay? That sound good to you?"
"Yes!" Theo enthusiastically agreed.
Tommy grabbed Theo's stool from the pantry while he and Buck started looking through the recipe book to find something to make together. Tommy hadn't expected his life to take this turn again when they decided to try again but Theo had made their lives more exciting and better. "You find something yet?" he asked after setting the stool up.
"Not yet!" Buck responded.
Theo pointed his finger at one of the cookie recipes. "That!" he shouted at them.
"Chocolate chip cookies? Good job, buddy." Buck held his hand up and the two of them high fived.
Tommy's heart warmed at the sight of his boyfriend and their son together. "I'm feeling left out over here," he mockingly complained.
"Sorry!" Theo leaned over and high-fived him too.
"Thanks, kiddo." Tommy ruffled his hair, and then the three of them started hunting down the ingredients to bake the chocolate chip cookies. Buck turned the oven on to pre-heat it and then they got to work.
They made a mess, of course, but the most important thing was that Theo had fun and learned something new. This wasn't the first time he had cooked or baked with Buck but it was a different experience each time. Didn't always work out either. Fortunately, all three batches of chocolate chip cookies came out perfectly. "They good," Theo declared after they cooled down enough for him to taste one.
"Good job!" Buck half hugged him, careful not to jostle him and accidentally break the cookie (which, of course, would lead to a meltdown).
"Now we have to clean up," Tommy reminded Theo.
"Oh no," Theo responded with a frown. His least favorite part of helping them in the kitchen.
"Oh, yes," a laughing Buck responded.
"Never change, Theo." Tommy kissed his boyfriend then leaned down to hug Theo, who responded by grabbing him a little harder than expected.
The two of them (and their extended family) would make sure he'd grow up knowing he was loved. This was just the start.
