Yankee and Yvette

Summary:

Yankee wishes it had legs instead of tiny little nubs. Especially when its trainer goes mountain climbing.

Work Text:

Yankee always envied Pokemon with feet. Maybe that was silly of it, but it longed to be among those with powerful strides instead of tiny little steps too short to keep up on the ground. Sure, it could float, but where was the fun in that? It wanted to run and jump and do all the things most others could do!

Maybe that was why it didn't know what to do when its trainer, Yvette, started rock climbing.

Few pokemon could scale craggy cliffs without specific moves, and those that could often fell short of keeping up. Even so, she kept Yankee and its tiny legs around, letting it hop along after her on the ground and hover around her when she climbed.

And climbed she did. With time, every mountain fell to her prowess, until only one remained: Mt. Coronet, deep in the Sinnoh region.

There was something about that place that sent fear to Yankee's very core, but Yvette still brought it with her, taking the little Pokemon on her journey up the steep slopes and through the caves. No wild Pokemon dared to stop her, though dozens looked at Yankee as if they were sizing it up for a meal. It still stuck close to its trainer, hovering when it could no longer hop through the snow to keep up.

Yet Yvette still continued.

The trek took them an entire day, but the peak was within sight. Even as the sun set, Yvette still strove to make it that little bit farther, grabbing at the handholds and dragging herself, bit by bit. Yankee hovered nearby, watching her, terrified to look down.

As she reached for another ledge, stretching as far as she could, the rocks crumbled, sending her plummeting down. Without a second thought, Yankee summoned all its power, and used the only move it had.

Hidden Power.

The air itself stilled as rocks formed beneath her, just in reach for her to grab and stop her fall. Yvette looked up, spotting the little Y and its two tiny feet, too tiny to hold on to a single foothold, and she smiled. It continued to create new footholds and ledges for her to reach, until Yvette finally stood atop Mt. Coronet, Yankee at her side.

Yankee wasn't good at much. It couldn't run fast or jump high or use any powerful moves. It wasn't good in battles or contests, nor in any competitions. Even so, as it stood on Yvette's shoulder, it didn't need any of that.

All it needed was her, a few berries, and a safe trip down.

Notes:

I honestly love those tiny little nub feet.
