Work Text:

The Fox family dining room had always been a place of ceremony.

Even on ordinary evenings the long mahogany table was laid with polished silver and delicate china, the tall windows curtained in velvet and the air perfumed faintly with herbs from the kitchen. Dinner in the Fox household was never a rushed affair. Lady Jane insisted on that. Conversation was expected, posture was expected, and decorum most certainly was expected.

Tonight, however, something new lingered in the room.

A quiet anticipation.

Belle Fox sat halfway down the table, her hands folded lightly in her lap beneath the cloth. The candlelight softened the gentle curves of her face and reflected faintly in her eyes, which kept drifting toward the man seated beside her.

For months she had imagined this moment.

Sitting beside him openly.

Not across a crowded street, not hidden away in some corner of the hospital, not whispering hurried goodbyes before someone noticed them standing too close together.

Tonight there was no hiding.

Jack Dawkins had been granted permission to court her properly.

The very thought still felt like something out of a dream.

Jack, for his part, looked as though he had wandered into a room that belonged to someone else entirely. He wore a dark coat that had clearly been pressed for the occasion and a stiff white collar that looked as though it might strangle him if given the opportunity. His posture was careful, attentive, though every so often Belle noticed him shift in his chair as if resisting the urge to loosen the garment around his neck.

He caught her watching him and leaned slightly closer.

“These collars,” he murmured quietly, careful that the others could not hear, “are designed by people who’ve never had to breathe in them.”

Belle pressed her lips together to hide a smile.

“You look very respectable,” she whispered.

Jack raised an eyebrow.

“Respectable,” he repeated softly, as if testing the word. “Now there’s a reputation I never thought I’d earn.”

Across the table, Belle’s father regarded him with a polite, thoughtful expression while Lady Jane maintained the composed dignity she carried into every room she entered. Fanny, Belle’s younger sister, had already begun chattering about some new dressmaker she had discovered and seemed delighted by the novelty of the evening.

Lady Jane had insisted on this dinner.

After months of tension, hesitation, and quiet observation, she had finally decided it was only fair to invite the man who had saved her life to sit at their table properly.

Belle had nearly burst with happiness when her mother announced it.

For years Belle had shown no interest in any suitor presented to her. Wealthy men, titled men, charming men with impeccable manners had all been politely turned away.

Yet here sat the one man she had chosen herself.

A former street boy who had somehow become one of the most gifted surgeons in the city.

Her father cleared his throat gently, drawing the table’s attention.

“Mr. Dawkins,” he said evenly.

Jack straightened slightly. “Yes, sir?”

“I understand the hospital has expanded its surgical program recently.”

Jack nodded. “It has, sir. New theatre opened last month. Gives us a bit more room to work.”

“And you’re overseeing much of that work?”

Jack hesitated briefly, clearly uncomfortable with taking credit for anything.

“I assist where I’m needed.”

It was a modest answer.

Belle knew better.

Jack was responsible for procedures few other surgeons in the city would even attempt.

Her father studied him for a moment before nodding slightly.

“And you enjoy the work?”

That question, at least, Jack answered without hesitation.

“Very much.”

The quiet certainty in his voice made Belle’s heart swell with pride.

Conversation flowed easily after that. Fanny spoke animatedly about fashion while Lady Jane asked polite questions about the hospital. The atmosphere gradually softened, the earlier tension easing as the meal progressed.

For a time Belle allowed herself to simply enjoy the moment.

This was everything she had hoped for.

Then, slowly, a strange feeling crept into her stomach.

At first it was nothing more than a faint wave of nausea. Belle paused with her fork halfway to her mouth and swallowed carefully.

Nerves, she told herself.

It made sense.

Tonight carried so much importance that her body was bound to react.

She set the fork down gently and reached for her glass, taking a small sip of water.

Beside her, Jack noticed immediately.

He glanced toward her, lowering his voice so the others would not hear.

“Everything alright?”

Belle forced a small smile.

“Just nerves,” she assured him softly.

Jack studied her face for a moment longer before nodding.

But the unease didn’t disappear.

Instead it lingered, deepening slowly.

The nausea twisted unpleasantly in her stomach, and Belle shifted slightly in her chair as though trying to settle herself more comfortably. She attempted to focus on the conversation around the table, though the words began to blur together.

Then a pressure began to form in her chest.

It was subtle at first.

A dull heaviness just beneath her ribs.

Belle frowned faintly and lifted a hand, pressing it lightly against the center of her chest.

The movement did not go unnoticed.

Jack’s gaze dropped instantly to her hand.

Concern flickered across his expression.

“You sure you’re alright?” he murmured.

Belle nodded quickly.

“I promise.”

Still, the pressure continued to build.

It spread slowly through her chest and into her shoulders. A faint headache began to bloom behind her eyes, and breathing suddenly felt more difficult than it should have.

She coughed softly, hoping the discomfort might pass.

It didn’t.

Without drawing attention, Jack reached beneath the table and gently took her hand in his. His fingers turned her wrist slightly, and Belle felt the familiar pressure of two fingers resting against her pulse.

Even while speaking calmly with her father, Jack was quietly checking her heartbeat.

The gesture might have gone unnoticed by anyone else.

But Belle felt her chest warm despite the growing discomfort.

His attentiveness was one of the many reasons she loved him.

Then suddenly the pain came.

It did not build slowly.

It struck.

A sharp, blinding agony exploded through her chest, stealing the air from her lungs so violently that a gasp tore from her throat before she could stop it.

Her chair scraped harshly against the floor as she doubled forward.

The pain was unbearable.

“Belle?”

Jack’s voice came instantly, sharp with alarm.

She tried to breathe but could barely draw in air. Her fingers clutched desperately at the front of his shirt as tears sprang to her eyes.

The room erupted with confusion.

Lady Jane stood abruptly.

“What’s happening?”

Jack was already on his feet, one arm wrapped firmly around Belle to support her.

“Belle, tell me where it hurts,” he urged, pushing her hair gently back from her face.

She struggled to form the words.

“My… heart.”

The realization hit Jack instantly.

The ligation.

It had failed.

Her body sagged suddenly against him, the strength leaving her limbs as the pain overwhelmed her.

“Belle!” he shouted, catching her before she slipped from her chair.

Panic filled the room as Belle’s parents rushed forward.

“Jack, please help her!”

But Jack had already scooped her into his arms.

“We’re going to the hospital,” he said, his voice tight with urgency.

The ride through the dark streets passed in a blur. Belle drifted in and out of awareness against his chest while Jack held her as though sheer determination might keep her alive.

When they burst through the hospital doors he was already shouting orders.

“Operating theatre!”

Nurses scattered into motion.

Hetty appeared within seconds.

Belle was placed carefully onto the operating table, her breathing shallow and uneven.

Her parents followed them in, frantic.

“Please save her,” Lady Jane pleaded.

Jack didn’t even look up.

“Hetty,” he said quietly, though the firmness in his tone allowed no argument. “Get them out.”

They protested, but the guards gently ushered them from the room.

Jack leaned over Belle.

Her eyes were barely open.

“Jack,” she whispered faintly.

He cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing softly along her skin.

“I know,” he murmured.

“I’m going to fix it.”

“I’m scared.”

His heart twisted painfully.

“I’m right here.”

He pressed a soft kiss to her temple.

“I love you,” she whispered.

Jack’s voice broke slightly when he answered.

“I love you ten times more.”

He kissed her gently before placing the ether mask over her mouth.

“Breathe,” he murmured.

Her eyelids slowly fluttered closed.

Then the surgeon took over.

Jack worked quickly, his hands moving with practiced precision as he removed the restrictive corset and prepared the surgical instruments. Hetty assisted silently beside him, anticipating what he needed before he even asked.

“Get the cuff,” Jack said suddenly.

Hetty paused.

“The experimental one?”

“Yes.”

If the ligation had failed once, repeating it might only lead to the same disaster.

The cuff was risky.

But it might save her.

Jack carefully placed the device around the damaged vessel and secured it into position.

For a moment everything seemed stable.

Then the heartbeat stopped.

The silence in the room felt suffocating.

“No,” Jack whispered.

Tears blurred his vision as he reached carefully into her chest and took her heart gently in his hand.

He began massaging it.

“Come on,” he murmured desperately.

Hetty’s voice was quiet beside him.

“Jack… she’s gone.”

“No she’s not.”

His voice broke as he continued the rhythmic motion.

Then—

A faint beat answered his touch.

Weak.

But real.

Hours later Belle lay unconscious in the hospital’s recovery ward.

Jack stepped out into the hallway, his body suddenly shaking as the adrenaline drained from him.

He barely made it to the wall before he doubled over and vomited.

Footsteps approached.

Lady Jane had returned.

She stopped short at the sight of him.

This was not the confident surgeon she had seen earlier.

This was a young man barely holding himself together.

Jack wiped his mouth weakly, his shoulders trembling.

“I almost lost her,” he said hoarsely.

Lady Jane did something she never would have imagined herself doing months earlier.

She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him.

Jack broke completely, burying his face against her shoulder as the fear of the last several hours finally overwhelmed him.

Days passed.

Belle did not wake.

Jack remained beside her bed nearly every hour, sleeping only when exhaustion forced him to.

On the third morning, he sat slumped beside her bed, her hand resting loosely in his.

“Please wake up,” he murmured quietly.

Her fingers twitched.

Jack froze.

Then her eyelids fluttered.

Slowly.

Weakly.

Her gaze drifted around the room before settling on him.

Her lips parted.

“Jack…?”
