The payphone in the hallway rings and rings until it stops, like everything else in this place eventually does. Whitaker leans against the wall, scrubs stiff with dried sweat and something he doesn’t want to name, quarters heavy in his pocket. He could call home—hear his mom’s voice crackle over the line from Broken Bow, ask about the harvest, pretend the city hasn’t hollowed him out yet. But what would he say? I’m fine, Ma. Just saved a guy from bleeding out. Again. The words taste like ash. Hero. That’s what the nurses call him when he stays late, when he jumps into the next trauma bay without being asked. Hero. It used to make his chest swell. Now it just sits there, heavy as a lead apron.
