Work Text:

There were many reasons why people respected the Heterodyne Boys. There was the intelligence, the courage, the willingness to help the less fortunate – and then, of course, there was the army of Jaegers.

Sadly, many people don’t respect intelligence or moral uprightness, but nearly everyone respects a battle clank the size of a small mountain.

When Agatha asked for volunteers to be the first in a new generation of Jaeger pilots, she’d barely finished speaking before Theo and Sleipnir stepped forward. They were the first. They are also, to date, the last.

In the Drift, the two pilots are linked mind-to-mind; they share each other’s memories, learn each other’s secrets. It says much about the Heterodyne Boys that they looked out into paranoid, conspiracy-riven Europa and expected to be able to find pilots who trusted each other that much; it says even more that they succeeded. It’s arguably a greater achievement than the construction of the Jaegers themselves.
