Chapter Text
Hunter Black had just woken up to his alarm, and none other than his father. He stared menacingly at his ceiling, flipping off his fan and rubbing his other on his face, wiping the sleep from his eyes. He rolled over on his bed, but rolled is an exaggeration as he was tangled in his bedsheets and barely limped to the side. Slamming his hand on the top of his dented alarm, from previous mornings like these to shut up the blaring noise. Hunter groaned as he rose from his bed like a vampire coming from its casket, and inched off the corner slowly but surely.
"HUNTER!"
His father, Billy Black, yelled loudly for him. He could hear Jacobs feet slamming loudly as he got off his bed and ran for the door. The next second Jacob was barging into Hunters room, the door hitting the side of the wall where the paint had worn from abuse. Hunter startled and looked up at his brother, mid stretch.
"Dads been yelling your name, please go see what he wants!?!" Jacob yelled, throwing his hands around all crazy like. His eyes spoke more words than the four he had just spoken. Hunters face softened, and he lowered his arms slowly. "Yes, I know, I am going okay?" Jacob's face twisted and he turned around, leaving the door wide open as he strutted out. Jacob had been losing his temper more frequently than before, Hunter was starting to worry.
Hunter followed shortly after, not caring that he was only wearing his favorite green plaid pajama bottoms, and nothing else. His father was sitting in the dining room, his face the epiphany of stress. Hunter saw the look on his face, and he internally cursed himself to death. "Hunter..I don't want to have to ask you this again, so answer honestly. Where were you last night?"
Hunter instantly went from anxious to down right confused, he had been at work all night and had come straight after? What could he have possibly done to get asked such a question..
"I was at work? Did something happen?" He asked with all the confidence of someone who knew they weren't guilty. His father recognized the sincerity almost instantly, and let out a quick sigh. "Chief Swan caught a bunch of kids drunk driving last night, said a few of them had run away before being caught, had to be sure you weren't converting back to your old ways."
Hunter let out a laugh, shaking his head in disbelief. He didn't find anything funny. Knowing Charlie, he probably went to his father the first thing after catching those kids and asking around about him.
"I would hope you would at least think highly of me, and not have to ask such a stupid question."
Hunters voice rose like a mountain starting off as a whisper and then to a yell. His anger raging like a bull seeing red. He turned on his heels, and slammed the door to his room. The house went eerily quiet, Hunter stood with his back to his door, huffing like a madman. He knew he was upset, but he didn't know why he was getting so worked up. He slowly breathed in and out, through his nostrils and out his mouth. He moved on, bending over to grab clothes off the floor and change.
In the distance he could hear Jacobs truck start, the loud damaged engine roaring to life, making its presence known to all.
Hunter was only a year older than Jacob, and yet the two were very different in nature. Jacob took his academics very seriously, he had a inkling on cars or anything mechanic related. Jacob knew who he was, and what he wanted. Hunter did not. Hunter didn't take school seriously, at all. He had no hobbies other than being a constant disappointment, and a stupid tease. He did not know who he was, and definitely did not know what he wanted. Hunter couldn't lie, he was definitely jealous of Jacob in some ways.
Hunter had finally shoved on his last shoe, it hitting the floor with a thud, at this point Hunter was rushing, he was gonna be late. Tripping on his shoelaces he rushed to his truck, grabbing the unlocked door handle and ripping the door almost of its hinges. He threw himself into his seat, starting the car with three click-click-clicks. Hunter may have went over the speed limit.
In the middle of physics, Hunter was bored. So bored he was hyper fixating on a little bug on the floor, scurrying about trying to find any drop of food.
His desk mate sitting to the right of him was scribbling notes like crazy, causing the table to shake back and forth. Mr. Pauler had just explained something about thermodynamics, and Hunter had about inched closer to a nap when the door had opened. Heads had slid up from their papers to see the distraction. In the doorway stood Jared Cameron. Hunter stared at him, his fists clenching under the desk. Jareds hair was cut, short, shorter than his. He had a tattoo on his shoulder, and he was about a foot too tall. This was not the Jared that Hunter had known. No, this was someone entirely different. Jared had glanced in his direction for a second, then averted his gaze as quickly as that. Hunter knew that something must have happened the three weeks he had been absent from school. He had heard Jacob droning on about Sam Uley starting a cult, and Jared was apparently a member. Hunter had rolled his eyes when he first heard this nonsense come out of Jacobs mouth, but now he believed it.
Hunter walked to his truck, it was raining yet again. The ground was slick, and he almost lost his footing multiple times. Jacob was waiting at his truck, leaning against the side nonchalantly. Hunter raised his eyebrows at him, pulling out his keys to unlock the door. "Tell dad i'll be out tonight, im going to the movies with Bells."
"Bells? Seriously Jake." Hunter huffed out, internally rolling his eyes at his brother. Jacob turned to look at him, his face stern, and clear annoyance riddled his expression. "What is your problem today?" Jacob let out, almost a little too loud for Hunters comfort. He bit back a remark, wanting to say he was the problem but that would just be a big fat lie.
He lifted himself into his truck, rolling down the window to get a better look at Jacob. "I'll make sure to tell him your exact words, tell 'Bells' I said hi, okay, 'Jakey'?" Hunter mocked, Jacob looked at him, trying to act serious, but the small hint of a smirk snuck onto his face. He leaned off the truck and walked away, itching his cheek with his middle finger, Hunter frowned and rolled his window up in fake annoyance.
At home Hunter was rushing yet again. He ran through the doors dropping his keys on the kitchen table, letting them slide against the fake mahogany. He turned the corner and practically came face to face with his dad. "Hi, have no time to talk, Jake is going to movies with 'Bells' me to work, bye!" He maneuvered around his father, making it to his room in record speed and shutting the door behind him. He had work in 7 minutes, and he still had to get changed. He pulled off his shirt and slipped on the diners' required wear, a stupid polo with the ugliest colors you could imagine. He dived over his shoes and some other clothes that have already taken home on the old floor of his bedroom. Hunter was not clean, or organized in any way, if you couldnt tell by his messy hair. That was exactly one of the reasons his hair was only to his shoulders, because he seriously couldn't maintain allat. He did miss his longer hair, but he was glad he could at least still honor it with the long mullet, which he had no excuse to maintain. He had really dark hair, almost black like the midnight sky. He didnt get it from his father, but rather his mom. Jacob had gotten his father's color, a dark brown that would brighten on days the sun actually came out in La Push. Running out the house, Hunter almost slipped over a huge puddle of water, ice secretly waiting under the water to strike. He peeked around to make sure nobody witnessed him making a fool of himself, who knows what he would have done to a witness?
Hunter pushed the back doors of the diner open, and everyone in the kitchen turned to him, relief washing over many faces. "Thank goodness you made it, Avery called in sick, we need a waitress pronto." Hunter dropped his stuff off in his respective locker, clocking in with a repetitive motion he performed daily. He huffed, and grabbed the note pad sitting on the counter.
"Just say you guys cant live without me.." he said sarcastically. Joanne, the head chef in the kitchen, just laughed and motioned for him to get his butt out there and start taking orders. He exited the kitchen through the push doors, and went to his first table, a required smile on his face. "Hi, what can I get you guys tonight?"
After about his sixth table that night, he heard the bell ring at the front door, signaling another groups entry. He had looked up to greet the group, and instantly regretted it. He turned around and went back into the kitchen, wanting to be anywhere else but here. The group who had entered consisted of none other than Sam Uley, and his cult members, Jared and Paul. Hunter cursed himself, this must be karma for talking about them earlier that day. I mean seriously what are the odds of running into them, honestly though now that he is really thinking about it pretty high, this town is small. His coworkers noticed him slaking around and staring out the small window of the kitchen door. "What are you doing?" One asked him, trying to peek out the window as well to get a glimpse of whatever was catching Hunters attention. "I..I cant serve that table!" He let out, 'very unprofessional Hunter' he was on the verge of biting his nails. Sam and Paul, he was fine serving, but Jared, he couldnt do. Jared and him used to be friends, and it would just be too akward going out there and asking "what would you like to eat?" acting like we haven't ghosted each other for months. His coworker looked at him silently, then walked out the door. She went to the group waiting to be seated and took them to a table. They shared a few words, and she left looking straight at him, a wicked smile on her face. As she came through the door Hunter was practically standing on the tips of his toes, "Did you get their order?" He asked. She slowly blinked up at him, then patted him on the shoulder. "Nope! Told them their waiter would be out in a minute, you are up sunny!" She laughed evilly, and walked over to the other side of the kitchen. Hunter swore to himself to never trust her again, 'damn you Sarah..'
Hunter took a deep breath and grabbed his pen and note pad, finally gaining the confidence to exit the kitchen. He slowly exited the kitchen and made his way to his awaiting doom.
"Hi, can I take your order?" He let out with a shudder, Sam, Paul, and Jared were all still looking at their menus, and one of them just had to talk. "Finally, took you long enou-" Jared had said, looking up in annoyance, until he came face to face with his best friend. Or who used to be his best friend. There was an awkward air to the group now, and Jareds lip seemed to quiver.
Sam noticed this all and took the reins like a good cult leader, Hunter thought. "Can I get the burger, please, hold the onions." He said, a stern, but polite, smile on his face. Hunter nodded, writing down the order, his handwriting being messy and quick, giving way to his nervousness. He turned to the next person, dreading the last. Paul looked up at him, no hint of any emotion other than hatred set on his face. He opened his mouth to order, but then their eyes met, and he choked on any words that were about to come from his mouth. First it was confusion that had slid onto Paul's face, then absolute disbelief.
Jared, who had been sitting ever so quiet, whispered, "no way.." Hunter's eyebrows raised, as he too was confused. Pauls thoughts were racing so fast, all thoughts of greasy food gone. The only thing thought forming in his head was the face of the man standing akwardly in front of him. Paul had just imprinted on Hunter, and he was ashamed to say the least. Sam understood his feelings at once and wanted to get Paul as far away from the diner as possible. Who knew if Paul was going to lose it in public, it was a much safer bet to remove him from the area. Jared had stood up first, he looked at Hunter, a small yearning for conversation, anything, fleeting for a moment in the boy's eyes, then nothing. He turned to Paul and Sam, who were now leaving their seats. Hunter was astonished, 'had he done something?' He stood there, mouth agape, as the boys left the diner. His hands were left shaking, and his thoughts racing. Never in his 18 years had something like this happened to him. Not only did it hurt his self-esteem, it was also what Hunter wanted to call absolutely disrespectful and rude. He turned to exit the room and go back to the kitchen, knowing that there had to be some eyes watching the abnormal exchange.
He clocked off two hours later, unable to shake the strange situation from his head. Pulling his dumb name tag off his polo that reeked of burgers, he lay his head on the steering wheel of his truck, letting the day sink in. He decided it was for the best to just forget the exchange; he could be reading into it too much, and it could be something entirely different. Yeah, that's what he told himself, that was it! So Hunter started his truck with a newfound attitude, deciding a night's rest was exactly what he needed right now.
Driving through La Push's lone streets at night was strangely calming, and Hunter wished he could drive for hours. He rolled down his windows, letting the cold breeze hit him in the face, the icey feeling biting his cheeks. It woke him up, and made him feel alive. In the air lay the lingering smell of salt water from the sea, and the memories of a bonfire. Hunter thought back to the many reservation bonfires he had attended when he was a kid, him and his family. His father would laugh with friends, and tell stories to the whole tribe, him, Jacob and their two sisters would be laughing as Billy made exaggerated faces. Right next to Billy as always, was their mother. Smiling endearingly at her children, and her husband. The picture of a happy family. Now his mother was dead, and his two sisters left town, unwilling to return. Hunter was left with the mess of his father and his selfish little brother. He loved them, dont get him wrong, but some things were just too much. Hunter let one of his arms slide out the open window and dangle in the wind. He gripped around nothing, nothing but air. For once, Hunter felt at peace, no worries constantly banging on the skull in his head. Just complete silence, no distraction in sight.
Pulling up to his house, he noticed Jacob was still not home, and neither was his father. 'Must be a late game tonight.' He thought. Gently setting his keys on the counter in the kitchen he decided to heat up some leftovers from a few nights ago, spaghetti, mm. The drone of the microwave filled the silence as Hunter pulled out his tip money, counted it, and laid it flat on the counter for his dad. He thought about sneaking a ten from the pile to use for himself, but decided against it. The beeping from the microwave pulled him from his schemes, and he took the plastic bowl from inside, the outer layer burning his fingers.
Inside his room, he ate while attempting to do school work from a week ago, it was due. School was definitely not his thing, if his lack of effort on his projects and papers didn't speak for themselves. He sat staring at a dumb algebra equation that he was supposed to find the value of X for. His mouth hung open, the eraser of his pencil between his teeth as he tried his hardest. He had eraser smudges from past attempts shadowing his paper, and he felt that this time he was close. He removed the pencil from between his teeth and started to solve the equation yet again, when the front door slammed shut.
Hunter jolted on the spot in his bed, caught off gaurd by the sudden noise. He got up off his bed to see who the perpetrator was. As soon as he opened the door he was met by Jacob rushing through the hall to his room. Hunter stopped him in his tracks to ask him what was wrong, as the boys anger was evident on his face.
"It's nothing." Jacob bit out, like a rapid dog.
Hunter didn't take the hint to shut up after, and decided to be a big brother and provoke him further. He huffed out a small laugh and let his sarcasm roll off his tongue. "What, did 'Bells' break up with you?" Hunter joked. Jacob did not take it as a joke. He was already at the edge, Hunter's words just so happened to be the motivation to take a leap from it. As quick as the remark left his lips, Jacobs' fist moved. Jacob turned and slammed his fist into Hunters cheek, grazing the edge of his nose. Hunter fell back against the wall, yet again taken aback by his brother's reaction. He held his nose in one hand; he could feel the blood gushing out and slipping through his fingers.
