Excellent fic set within AOS but with key canon divergence. Amanda dies early by assassination, Winona dies on Tarsus, and Jim joins Starfleet at 18. Does not follow, but might precede, the events of ST09.
Jim whump: anti-human prejudice, loneliness, self-doubt; sent to Tarsus, starvation, witnesses massacre, implied rape; incredible loneliness and psychic damage from suppressing bond
Spock whump: loss of mother; psychic damage/difficulty from suppressed bond with Jim
