Earlier that Day:
Her mama’s sharp eyes flickered to her hands nervously pulling at a button on her sleeve. She smiled, her eyes soft with a love and understanding that Rumi was so used to seeing.
Celine stood from her chair, calmly taking Rumi’s hands in hers and she stilled under her mama’s gentle touch.
“You look perfect, my baby girl,” Celine said. She paused, raising an eyebrow, and tilted her head, gaze traveling to her tie.
Celine shook her head, a laugh escaping her. “Looks like someone learned their tie tying skills from their eomma,” she teased with a cheeky smile.
A blush rose to Rumi’s cheeks and she looked away. “W-Why do you let eomma tie your ties, then?”
But she already knew the answer, everyone at Sunlight Entertainment knew it too.
“Because,” Celine said, fixing her daughter’s tie with ease, “I am not going to destroy whatever your eomma’s hands lay on.” She paused, giving Rumi a pointed look that told her whatever she said stayed between them. Neither of them needed to face her wife’s wrath. “No matter how messy the tie may be.”
And it was true. No matter how messy Miyeong’s tie may have been that day, no one at the company said a thing when their CEO walked in with a knotted mess around her neck. Not when she wore a smile that could light up the stars.
“Now, stop fussing with your suit,” her mama said. “You’ll do great today, sweetpea.” She patted Rumi on the shoulder, finally finished fixing the tie that was almost as bad as one of Miyeong’s.
And before Rumi could say anything, Celine quietly tacked on, “You can totally back out now. I wouldn't mind. It’s a dangerous job after all. Just say the word and you can stay at home with eomma and I forever.”
Rumi blinked.
Then groaned, leaning back and huffing like a child. “Mamaaaa! I’ll be fine. I’m doing this because I want to protect people like you and eomma.”
“I know, sweetpea,” Celine said with a sigh. “I just worry.” She smiled and tilted her head, placing her hand at the side of Rumi’s cheek. “You’re still my baby girl after all.”
Rumi smiled up at her mama, leaning into her touch.
“It felt like only yesterday I was stopping you from putting every single object in your mouth.” A wide smile spread across her lips as she started to pull out her phone. “I still have that picture of you trying to eat a whole stick and your eomma rushing to–”
A furious blush flushed Rumi’s neck and the tips of her ears. “Okay, okay. Alright that’s enough,” she said frantically, cutting her mama off and barely looking her in the eyes. “I’m not a kid anymore,” she muttered.
Celine’s smile grew into a knowing smirk as she tucked her phone away. “Right, right,” she relented. “You’re not a little kid anymore. You can take care of yourself.”
There was a pause.
Her tone grew heavy with sincerity, pulling Rumi’s gaze. “You’ll be great today, sweetpea. I just know it,” she said with a loving ferocity.
Rumi paused and stared back at her, eyes wide.
After a moment, she pulled at her lip and shook her head. A nervous bubble rose in her throat. “You can’t be so sure about that. How do you know?”
Celine smiled again, softer. “Because, you’re amazing and they’ll love you.” She placed a soft kiss on the top of Rumi’s forehead and pulled back, a spark in her eyes at her baby girl all grown up. “Just like I love you, my baby girl.”
Rumi walked through the doors of Sunlight Entertainment, a warmth settling in her chest at the familiarity of the building.
She had grown up here. She remembered sitting in her eomma’s lap when she recorded new songs for the Sunlight Sisters, Miyeong letting her try some singing too in her squeaky child voice. She remembered playing with her toys in her mama’s office while she waited for her to finish a meeting, Celine promising to get her ice cream for being her wonderfully patient, baby girl.
She remembered the fond memories and warmth that her moms had created here. It settled a small bit of the anxiety in her stomach.
Rumi walked through the halls, knowing the route to the office she was supposed to go to by heart. It was her eomma’s office after all.
After their idol days were over, Miyeong and Celine, as a couple, along with Eunbin, started Sunlight Entertainment. It was an instant success. People all over the world had tried to become trainees. And it wasn’t just for being an idol either.
People came to be music producers, choreographers, instructors, and actors. Together, the company had produced some of the most popular Kpop groups and successful celebrities of their time.
And now, knowing her eomma and auntie Eunbin would be in that office, it gave Rumi some peace.
Her mama’s words from earlier this morning rung in her head.
Right. She could do this.
She took a deep breath, reciting everything in her head standing just outside of the door labeled “Ryu Miyeong”, with “Executive Manager” in smaller lettering underneath.
Kang Mira and Choi Zoey. Her first assignment as a bodyguard.
Both female. Mira, 23, two years older than her and Zoey, 20, a year younger than her.
Mira was a famous actor, her eomma’s most successful mentee. She had been in the spotlight since she was 15, gaining attention for her breakout role in “A Kingdom’s Love”. She kept growing from there, taking on diverse and unique roles ranging from a quiet but ethically challenged doctor, to a badass warrior princess.
Her repertoire and her fame just kept growing. And when she came out as gay? The scene exploded for her. There were supporters, there were haters, just like there was for Rumi’s moms’, but no one could deny her acting talent.
And when both she and Zoey had announced their relationship to the world, the media didn’t stop for a whole three months.
Zoey was a famous streamer, gradually rising to fame through her sunshine personality that could flip like a switch when she was cursing out people on her gaming streams.
The couple had taken the world by storm, having been together for the past two years.
Of course, it wasn’t like Rumi knew all of this information before reading their profiles.
Totally not.
She had memorized it for her job. That was it.
Nothing more.
She sighed, shaking her head, her long purple braid trailing behind her.
It was now or never. Professional, not a purple haired disaster.
She knocked on her eomma’s door, schooling her face into a calm, neutral expression.
There was a pause before her eomma’s voice washed over her, a soothing lullaby in a sea of storms. “Come in!”
Rumi walked in, bowing just at the doorway, a strand of stray purple hair falling in front of her eyes.
“Mira, Zoey, I’d like you to meet Kim Rumi, your new bodyguard. Rumi, this is Kang Mira and Choi Zoey.”
Rumi finally looked up and froze.
Growing up, Rumi had frequently visited the company, but when she trained to be a bodyguard, she was rarely there. No one recognized her, especially when she used her mama’s last name, Celine having taken Miyeong’s last name when they married. That meant when she did visit the company, there was no big fuss. And, on the days she was there, she had never seen Mira or Zoey.
Sure, Rumi had seen Mira in her movies, interviews, and modeling gigs and had seen Zoey in her streams and interviews, but seeing them on screen was one thing.
Seeing them in person was a whole other thing.
Mira sat tall, pink hair slung over her frame, wearing a fashionable white blouse that sat perfectly on her lithe figure. A set of dark grey jeans were paired with it, the outfit pulled together with her gold rimmed glasses. Sharp eyes sat behind her glasses, slightly wide in… was that shock? Curiosity?
They pinned her with an intense gaze and Rumi could feel a blush rise to her–-
No.
She needed to stay professional.
She averted her gaze, trying to look anywhere but at Mira. It fell on Zoey.
The streamer was in an oversize striped hoodie, black hair pulled into her signature buns at the sides of her head. Up this close, Rumi could see the countless freckles on her cheeks that seemed to form constellations. The girl’s eyes were wide with awe and… was her mouth hanging open?
Rumi blinked, head tilting the slightest that her eomma told her made her look like Celine.
And then out of nowhere, Zoey blurted out, “You have heterochromia!”
Oh.
So that’s why they were staring.
Rumi felt the tension from her shoulders fade even as a small blush crept up her neck. “Ummm yes…?” she said, not quite sure how to answer the girl’s sudden outburst. “Does that bother you Ms. Choi?”
Zoey shook her head so much that Rumi was afraid her buns might come undone. Somehow they miraculously survived.
“Are you kidding me!?” Zoey exclaimed, practically buzzing out of her seat. “It’s amazing! Scratch that. It’s awesome!”
Her head snapped to her girlfriend at whiplash inducing speeds. Her smile was wide when she spoke.
“Don’t you agree, babe?”
For some reason Rumi found herself looking at Mira expectantly.
Mira looked her up and down, arms crossed. After a moment she nodded slowly, humming in agreement.
“It’s sick,” she said, her voice deep and smooth, a wild contrast to Zoey’s energy.
And then it seemed to click in Rumi’s head.
The two complemented each other perfectly. Rumi wasn’t oblivious, she had heard the nicknames their fans gave them. Mira was the Moon and Zoey was the Sun and seeing the two in person, it seemed to fit them perfectly.
And now she was the bodyguard to the Sun and Moon.
A loud clap pulled Rumi from her thoughts and her reflexes immediately made her stand closer to the two.
“I’m glad the three of you have gotten off on the right foot. You’ll be seeing a lot of each in the future,” Eunbin said with a wide grin.
A low impressed whistle hummed through the room. “And if that little display from Rumi proved anything, you girls are in good hands,” Eunbin said cheerfully.
Rumi could feel all the eyes in the room turn to her and a blush spread to the tips of her ears. She coughed, pointedly looking anywhere but Mira and Zoey.
“I-I’m…,” she trailed off, trying to stand taller. She had to pull it together. She had to be professional. This was their first meeting.
She cleared her throat, schooling her face into something neutral, and hopefully something that didn’t show the blush on her cheeks. “I’m just doing my job.”
“Of course,” a softer voice chimed in. Her eomma’s voice made her turn and she found her smiling at her. Her gaze was filled with silent pride and joy twinkled in them.
Mira and Zoey didn’t know Miyeong was her eomma but anyone could see the care and love in her eyes toward her daughter. Which was why it was a good thing Mira and Zoey had their backs turned to her.
Eunbin’s gaze flashed to Miyeong, eyes widening the slightest. She elbowed the older Sunlight Sister trying to snap her from her gaze.
Her eomma cleared her throat, realizing, and said, “Now, I’m glad everyone has met! But, also, everybody out! Mira. Zoey. You two have an interview soon and Rumi will be escorting you. This should help you get to know each other better,” she said with a bright smile.
There was a beat.
Nobody said anything. Nobody moved.
Her eomma’s smile dimmed, just the slightest, a sharp edge to it. “Preferably now please,” she said sweetly. Was that a chill in the room?
Rumi knew that voice.
She knew that smile.
There was a reason why her eomma was in charge at home.
Rumi involuntarily shivered and Mira and Zoey must have gotten the hint too. They both quickly stood up and grabbed their stuff, but before they could brush past Rumi, they paused.
They both looked at Rumi for a split second before turning back to each other.
They had a silent conversation with their eyes while Rumi stood there awkwardly.
Oh.
Mira was tall. Taller than her.
And Zoey, she was shorter than her.
She fit between them perfectly.
Huh? Wait. Why was she thinking that?
Was it getting hot or was it just her?
She subtly shook her head. She was their bodyguard. She just had to get along with them and protect them.
Yeah that was all.
Rumi stood in the awkward silence, waiting for the two girls. For a moment, her gaze shifted past Mira’s shoulder. She found Eunbin cheering for her like a cheerleader from the sidelines, mouthing silent chants and throwing her hands in the air. Her eomma had a too wide smile on her face, a smile she had inherited, her eyes gleaming at her as she held two thumbs up.
The sight tugged the edge of her lips up into a smile she tried to suppress.
And if she hadn’t been so focused on trying to suppress the smile, trying to stay professional, she would have noticed Mira and Zoey had finished their silent conversation.
Their smiles mirrored each other, predatory with a challenge, a wild spark in each of their gazes.
“We look forward to getting to know you, Rumi,” Mira said slowly and for some reason it didn’t just sound like a simple friendly greeting.
Rumi blinked, tearing her gaze from her eomma and auntie Eunbin.
Since when were they on a first name basis?
The ride to Mira and Zoey’s interview went surprisingly smooth.
That was, at least until the end of the ride.
Zoey had been watching turtle videos on full blast in the back while Mira had a sleep mask on her eyes, taking a short nap.
The drive to the place wasn’t long, but it was enough for Rumi to get used to the background noise. She actually didn’t mind it. Learning facts about the turtles was surprisingly interesting. It also gave her something to listen to when the traffic got a bit heavy.
Occasionally, Zoey would talk to her and add another fact about turtles that the current video reminded her of or correct something it said.
It wasn’t until a few minutes did Rumi finally realize there was no more background music or turtle facts blasting from Zoey’s phone. In fact, Zoey was silent too.
When had that happened?
It was quiet. Maybe too quiet given everything.
Rumi paused, glancing into the rearview mirror for a quick second. “Is everything alright back there?” she asked hesitantly, angling her shoulder back so the two could hear her.
Sure, they were just getting to know each other, but this seemed out of character for someone like Zoey, who made a living out of gaming and talking to her chat.
Her question was met with silence.
And no matter how much she wanted to turn around and find out what was going on, she had to focus on the road. It was part of her job after all.
The silence continued and she drummed her fingers against the wheel with each passing minute until finally, they arrived at their destination.
She took a deep breath as she parked, steeling herself for whatever she was going to face back there.
Okay. She just had to ask a simple question, ask if everything was alright since they seemed pretty quiet back there. She could do that.
And as she turned around in her seat, the question on the tip of her tongue, the words instantly died in her throat.
She froze under their stares.
Both Mira and Zoey were intently watching her, a look she couldn’t quite figure out balancing in their gazes. It was almost predatory. Hungry? She didn’t know how to describe it.
All she knew was that her resolve instantly crumbled. She gulped and abruptly turned away, a blush creeping up her neck.
Okay. That was something. That was totally normal. Right?
That was probably totally normal. She never had any experience with celebrities before this so maybe this was just something they did. A kind of bodyguard interrogation? Wait, no. Well that was a lie. She did have experience with celebrities. Her moms were celebrities. But, well, that was besides the point.
Mira and Zoey were new celebrities. Maybe this was some kind of ritual all of the newer celebrities were doing to figure out if their bodyguards were legit.
Rumi nodded slowly, taking in a small shaky breath.
Yeah. That was totally it.
She collected herself with another breath before stepping out of the van. She walked to the other side, scanning the area before doing anything.
When she was sure everything was fine, she pulled the door open. “I hope the ride over was okay. I noticed you guys were a bit quiet–”
Before she could say anything more, a blur of motion flew past her, too fast for her to process anything. And then, before she knew it, one moment she was standing tall, opening the door for the two girls to get out. The next, she had somehow been pulled to lean down, pressed close to a… face?
Zoey’s freckles exploded in view, her eyes wide and peering into Rumi’s with an energy that looked like a live wire.
“Woah, Rumi,” she said breathlessly. Rumi could feel Zoey’s grip around her wrist tighten as her excitement grew. “They’re even more beautiful up close.”
There was a pause as Rumi finally gained some consciousness of what was going on.
“You’re even more beautiful up close,” Zoey said shamelessly.
Rumi finally processed what had happened and froze when she finally understood what Zoey was saying.
Wait. What?
Did-did she just say… Did Zoey just call her beautiful?
And before Rumi could dwell on that any longer, Mira came out of the van, elegant and tall, slinking like a cat. Zoey stepped back as Mira approached, getting closer and closer.
Wait too close. What was happening?
Mira leaned into her personal space, sharp eyes trailing all over Rumi’s figure with a knowing smirk on her lips.
She tilted her head, eyes glinting. “Cat got your tongue, pretty girl?” she hummed.
Rumi’s brain short circuited.
“I–I,” she started but was abruptly shut up when Mira got even closer, almost face to face like Zoey was.
“Hmmm, getting a bit hot maybe?”
Rumi gulped, looking up at her. She was helpless to whatever was happening. She didn’t even know what was happening.
And just like that, Mira unclipped the jacket and, in one motion, draped it into Rumi’s arms.
Her eyes widened just a tiny bit as her gaze trailed up and down Rumi’s arms.
Why was she so interested in her arms–
“What an interesting surprise, Rumi,” Mira said, one eyebrow raised. “Tattoos.”
Oh. Those. She had forgotten about those.
“OMG! Those are awesome! Maybe even more than your eyes! Mira! Mira! Look!” Zoey squealed, jumping close and tugging at Mira’s arms.
“I see them, babe,” she said calmly all while Rumi stood there speechless.
What the hell was happening?
Her brain couldn't come up with an explanation fast enough. Any words died on her tongue. She couldn’t come up with an explanation, she couldn’t defend herself, and Mira and Zoey didn’t leave her enough time to.
“See you inside, Rumi,” Mira said and just as quickly, they left, Zoey waving eagerly at her as she passed. The two headed into the building leaving Rumi speechless with her mind scrambled.
She stood there uselessly and could feel a heat rise from her chest and spread across her whole face in a furious blush.
She lamely reached out to them to– to what?
What was she trying to do? Protest what they had said? Defend herself? Go after Mira and Zoey?
Wait. They weren’t supposed to go into the building without her there with them! That was bodyguarding 101!
No. No. She was totally screwed.
If that was some kind of test the couple was conducting on her, she totally failed.
What was she going to do now?
Her jacket hung limply in her arms like a surrender flag, feeling somehow impossibly heavy.
But there was nothing she could do? Was there?
Rumi’s shoulders slumped as she admitted defeat.
All she could do now was follow the two inside and hope that they were kind enough to let her be their bodyguard for the rest of the day. Or at least however long before she would be totally and inevitably fired.
Yeah okay. Maybe she wasn’t cut out for this after all.
Her first day on the job and she was already going to get fired. Great.
At least her moms’ would welcome her back with a wide smile and open arms, happy they got their baby girl back.
Rumi sighed as she entered the building, steeling herself for the remainder of her time with the couple.
And as she caught up to them, following the flow of long pink hair and a very animated voice talking about how white wasn’t white at all but all of the colors combined, she still couldn’t help but think.
What the hell had just happened?
