The rocket hit with a force that left Mikhail’s ears ringing. Concrete dust hung thick in the air, choking him as he blinked up at what remained of the warehouse ceiling. A jagged hole gaped above, where sunlight cut through the swirling gray haze. He tried to lift his arm only to find it pinned under rubble, numb and slick with a warmth he shouldn't been feeling.
Beside him, Ludwig coughed, spitting out blood and grit. His glasses lay shattered near his boot, one lens cracked like a spiderweb. "Scheiße," he rasped, fingers trembling as they brushed the jagged shrapnel embedded in his thigh. Crimson bloomed across his lab coat, stark against the white fabric. "Did... did you see where it came from?"
Heavy’s voice was a raw scrape. "Soldier. Rocker Jumping" He shifted, agony tearing through his chest. A steel beam lay across his legs, crushing but not yet breaking. Dust coated his tongue, metallic and bitter. "Cannot move."
Medic’s laugh was thin, desperate. "Neither can I." He fumbled for Mikhail’s hand, their fingers tangling in the debris. Blood seeped between their palms, sticky and insistent.
Heavy squeezed back. The pressure sent fresh pain up Ludwig’s arm, but neither let go. Around them, the battlefield’s distant gunfire faded into a hollow buzz. Rubble shifted somewhere above, but no footsteps followed. Only dust motes danced in the fractured light.
Ludwig tilted his head, the movement stiff in pain, until his gaze locked with Mikhail’s. The Russian’s eyes, usually sharp with battle-fury, were wide and clouded—not just with pain, but a raw, unguarded fear Ludwig had never witnessed. It wasn’t fear of death. It was fear of *this*: the stillness, the silence closing in, the unbearable thought of facing the end alone. Ludwig understood. He felt it too, a cold dread pooling beneath the agony in his leg.
With a grunt that tore from his ruined throat, Ludwig leveraged his free elbow against the debris, dragging himself an inch, then another, toward Mikhail’s broad chest. The jagged shrapnel in his leg scraped bone, sending white-hot sparks across his vision. He ignored it. His trembling fingers found Mikhail’s cheek, slick with blood and grit. Using the torn cuff of his lab coat, Ludwig wiped gently, smearing the crimson streak but revealing the familiar, weathered skin beneath. The gesture was clumsy, tender. Mikhail’s breath hitched, a wet, rattling sound.
Resting his temple against the solid warmth of Heavy’s chest, Ludwig listened to the frantic, faltering rhythm beneath. His own heartbeat thudded weakly in answer. "Misha," he whispered, the name tasting like iron and dust. "Look at me." Mikhail’s eyes, heavy-lidded now, focused with effort. Ludwig smiled, thin and bloodstained. "It was foolish, yes? All this fighting. For what?" He coughed, a bubble of red forming at the corner of his lips. "But you... meine liebe... you were worth every foolish moment." Mikhail’s hand tightened impossibly around Ludwig’s, a silent, desperate anchor in the rising dark.
"Ludwig," Mikhail rumbled, his voice thick and wet, each syllable an agony. He shifted his head slightly, the movement grinding broken ribs. The dust motes swam before his eyes. "Listen." He swallowed hard, tasting copper. "Is... good place to die." His breath hitched, a wet rasp. "Beside you." A ghost of his usual grin touched his lips, fleeting. "Would not want... this... with anyone else." His thumb stroked weakly across Ludwig's knuckles. "Only you."
The confession hung heavy in the ruined air, thicker than the dust. Ludwig felt a tremor run through Mikhail’s body, a silent sob trapped beneath the crushing weight and the pain. He understood. The battlefield rage, the manic science, the desperate camaraderie – it all distilled down to *this*. Raw. Fragile. Real. Ludwig pressed closer, ignoring the firestorm in his leg and the cold numbness creeping up his own spine. He traced the stubble along Mikhail’s jawline, fingertips sticky with their mingled blood. "So stubborn," he murmured, his own voice fading. "So brave." The distant gunfire seemed to stutter, replaced by a high-pitched ringing in his ears, a coldness spreading from his core.
Sunlight, fractured through the gaping hole above, painted stripes of fading gold across Ludwig’s pale face and Mikhail’s dust-caked stubleThe metallic scent of blood was overwhelming now, mixed with the sharp tang of pulverized concrete and the faint, fading odor of cordite. Mikhail’s ragged breathing grew shallower, each inhalation a shallow sip of the dust-choked air. Ludwig watched the light flicker in the Russian’s dark eyes, not fear now, but a profound exhaustion, a deep, aching relief. He felt his own eyelids grow impossibly heavy. The crushing pain in his leg dulled, replaced by a spreading chill, a profound lethargy. The silence wasn't empty anymore. It was full, overflowing with everything unspoken, everything fought for, everything loved. He tightened his grip one last time, a final anchor against the inevitable pull, and surrendered to the quiet.
Then came the sudden, jarring brightness – not the harsh glare of battlefield sun, but the sterile, fluorescent hum of the Respawn chamber. Mikhail blinked, disoriented, his lungs expanding with a sharp gasp of clean, cool air. No rubble pinned him. No crushing weight on his chest. Beside him, Ludwig sat up with a startled yelp, frantically patting down his pristine lab coat where crimson stains had bloomed seconds before. Relief, sharp and dizzying, washed over Mikhail, followed immediately by a giddy, disbelieving laugh that burst from his chest.
Ludwig whipped his head towards the sound, his eyes wide behind miraculously intact glasses. One moment, visceral agony and the taste of iron dust; the next, the antiseptic chill of the Respawn chamber and Mikhail’s booming laughter echoing off the metal walls. He stared at his own hand, clean and unbloodied, flexing his fingers experimentally where shrapnel had torn muscle moments before. A hysterical chuckle bubbled up in his own throat, mixing with Mikhail’s guffaws. "Scheisse, Misha!" he gasped, pushing his glasses up his nose with a shaky hand. "That... that was *unheimlich* realistic!"
Mikhail wiped tears of laughter and sheer relief from his eyes. He slapped Ludwig hard on the shoulder – a gesture that would have been agonizing moments ago, now solid, reassuring. "Da, Doctor! Was like finest opera!" His grin was wide, genuine, the clouded fear utterly vanished. "You cried! Real tears! When you said, 'Misha, look at me... you were worth every foolish moment!'" Mikhail mimicked Ludwig's strained whisper with exaggerated theatricality, clutching his own chest dramatically. "Was very convincing! Academy Award performance!"
Ludwig flushed crimson, but his own grin was irrepressible. "Me?! And you! 'Is good place to die... beside you... only you!'" Ludwig pitched his voice low and gravelly, mimicking Mikhail's wet rasp perfectly. He dissolved into fresh laughter, shaking his head. "Such melodrama! 'Would not want this with anyone else'!" He shoved Mikhail playfully. "You sentimental bear! I thought you were genuinely terrified!" The absurdity of it, the intensity of the shared near-death experience followed instantly by the sterile safety of respawn, flooded them both with a strange, manic energy. The battlefield outside the chamber doors felt worlds away.
The familiar, high-pitched whine of another respawn sequence sliced through their laughter. Light coalesced into the wiry, kinetic form of Scout, already hopping impatiently from foot to foot as the chamber solidified him. He blinked, shook his head like a wet dog, and immediately zeroed in on Medic and Heavy clutching each other's arms, faces flushed with laughter and lingering tear tracks glistening on Heavy’s cheeks. Scout’s jaw dropped. "Oh, COME ON!" he yelled, throwing his hands up dramatically. "Are you two *AGAIN*? Seriously? Every. Single. Match!" He rolled his eyes so hard it looked physically painful, his entire body sagging with exaggerated exasperation. "Didja hold hands this time? Didja cry? Lemme guess, ya died lookin' all tragic-like in each other's arms?"
Mikhail’s booming laughter instantly doubled at Scout’s outrage. He threw a massive arm around Ludwig’s shoulders, pulling him close in a crushing, affectionate hug that lifted the Medic slightly off his feet. "Da, little Scout! Was magnificent death!" Mikhail declared proudly, still grinning. "Much weeping! Very romantic! Doctor said poetic things!" Ludwig, caught in the embrace and still chuckling, managed a weak nod of confirmation, his glasses askew. Scout groaned, dragging a hand down his face. "Unbelievable! You guys are worse than Spy and Engie with that dang dispenser! Least *they* don't slow down the whole respawn queue sob-singing love ballads!" He stomped towards the exit hatch. "Fightin' a war here, people! Move yer sappy butts!" The hatch hissed open, revealing the distant sounds of renewed gunfire, and Scout bolted out without a backward glance.
The abrupt shift from Scout’s frantic energy back to the quiet hum of the chamber sobered Ludwig slightly. He gently extricated himself from Mikhail’s bear hug, adjusting his lab coat. The phantom ache in his leg was gone, but the memory of Mikhail’s terrified eyes, the raw confession exchanged amidst rubble and ruin, lingered like static in the air. He met Mikhail’s gaze still sparkling with amusement, but the deep, unguarded warmth beneath it was undeniable, intensified by the shared joke. "He is right, you know," Ludwig murmured, a faint smile touching his lips despite himself. "It *does* happen rather often." Mikhail’s smile softened, losing its theatrical edge. He reached out, not for a dramatic gesture this time, but simply to rest his large hand briefly, reassuringly, on Ludwig’s shoulder. "Da, Doctor," he rumbled, his voice warm and steady. "But is good death. Better than dying alone." The hatch beckoned, the battle called, but for one more heartbeat, they stood together in the sterile light, the echo of Scout’s outrage fading, replaced by the quiet certainty forged in countless respawns. Then, with a shared nod that needed no words, they turned and strode towards the chaos, side by side.
