Vada looked at the latest article on her phone and felt her heart sink to her stomach.
Shooting at local middle school. Three reported dead, eleven injured.
Mia saw the sudden panic flash over her girlfriend's face and immediately knew something was wrong. Before she could ask, though, Vada booked it to the bathroom and began puking.
Mia was quick to be by her side, holding her hair back and doing her best to soothe her.
Vada's body was shuddering from anxiety and her breathing was rapid, even after the vomiting stopped.
As Mia flushed the toilet, the panicking girl backed up against the wall, clutching her chest as tears began to stream down her face.
"Vada, hey" Mia said softly, brushing the tears away from the woman's face. Vada lunged forward and clung to the dancer like her life depended on it. "It's okay"
"A-Amelia" Vada whimpered in between gasps. Mia looked down at her in concern.
"Your sister?" Mia asked, more confused than anything. "What happened?"
"I-I don't- I'm not- Middle sch- Shooting"
Mia's heart sank at that last word, echoes of screams flowing through her mind. She shook her head, forcing herself out of that spiral. It would really suck if they were both panicking.
"I'm sure Amelia is okay" Mia tried to soothe, even though she knew it was a lie. She couldn't be sure. Not after everything.
Fuck, this country...
Just then, the front door to the house opened and Amelia's voice began swimming through the house as she began to talk aloud about her day.
Both girls in the bathroom went still to listen, and it wasn't long before Amelia found her way to the bathroom.
"Come on, you lovebugs" the young girl whined. "I have to p-" she stopped suddenly as she saw the state her sister was in. "What's wrong?"
Vada stood up suddenly and wrapped her sister in a tight hug, relief flooding her anxiety-rattled body.
"You're okay" she breathed.
"Uh, yeah" Amelia confirmed, confused. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Vada was just a bit worried about you" Mia dismissed as she ruffled Amelia's hair, saving them all from that conversation. "You know how she gets" she continued. "We'll get out of your way and then how about we watch a movie, hm? Your pick"
"Okay!" Amelia agreed cheerily as she went into the bathroom, locking the other two girls out. Vada looked at Mia with a weak smile.
"Thanks"
"No need, babe" Mia winked. "How are you feeling?"
"A bit better"
"Good" Mia nodded. "Will you be okay if I leave for a few minutes to get some ice cream from the store?"
"Yeah" Vada smiled, getting up on her tippy toes to kiss the taller girl on the cheek. "I love you so much"
"I love you too, V"
The three spent that night watching a variety of anime movies that Amelia had picked and eating ice cream.
Vada and Mia ended up falling asleep lying on each other while Amelia sat by their feet, engaged in her movies.
And everything was okay.
