Summary
If Anders had to pinpoint the exact moment his better sense had abandoned him, he would trace it back to that day in Lowtown marketplace. Witnessing Fenris, an elf who had only ever shown himself to be acerbic at best and vitriolic at worst, practically melt a merchant with unexpected kindness and effortless charm? Well, it was eye-opening.
He didn’t dwell too much on the way that smooth voice made his stomach flip, nor the sudden heat he felt seeing that broad smile for the first time. He was mostly preoccupied with two immediate questions: 1) why had Fenris never treated him this way? And, 2) what would it take to achieve that outcome?

Anders just shook his head, a reluctant smile tugging at his own lips. When their brief rest was over, he started to readjust his pack, fumbling with a buckle his tired fingers refused to cooperate with.
Before he could curse his own clumsiness, a calloused, lyrium-lined hand brushed his aside. Without a word, Fenris took the leather strap and cinched it tight in one economical motion. His knuckles brushed the feathers of Anders’ coat on the way back up.
“I could’ve done it,” Anders protested weakly, trying to keep the petulance from his tone.
Fenris gave him a long, lingering look. “I know.”
It was a simple, practical gesture, Anders realised, not the frustrated impatience he mistook it for. An act of quiet, unexpected care, like the charm at the clinic, and it felt louder than any of their arguments.
