Chapter Text
Beyond the frost-laced panes of the Palace’s left wing, the world begins to stir. Dawn spills slow and tender across the sky, a blush of rose unfurling through the ashes of night. Trees rise like quiet prophets, their bare limbs lifted in silent prayer, brushed faintly gold by morning’s first sigh.
A wind moves through, not loud, not hurried. It breathes along the stones, coaxing the last clinging leaves from the branches. They drift down like secrets, spinning, whispering, scattering across the courtyard in delicate rustles.
The castle, swathed in ivy and time, wears shadow like a second skin. Its walls, worn smooth by centuries, hum with memory. Every stone carries the weight of what once was— the echo of footsteps long faded, the ghost of laughter, of grief, of triumph whispered to no one.
Inside, Jungkook leans into the silence. His forehead brushes the glass, cold and clear. Breath fogs in soft clouds that vanish too soon, like dreams forgotten upon waking. Beyond the window, hills rise in folds of mist, each curve of the land veiled in the hush of becoming. The world looks touched by enchantment, half-real, half-story.
A bird calls, sharp and sudden, then vanishes into stillness. Leaves stir. The air tenses, listening.
And Jungkook feels it, down to his bones, the hush before a beginning. The kind of stillness that holds the weight of something waiting to unfold.
Exhaling, his fingers tighten around the edge of the window ledge, knuckles pale. His lap bears the weight of a single sheet of parchment, but it feels far heavier than it should, as though the letter carries the gravity of a thousand unseen fates.
Two days ago, Hoseok — loyal, ever-grinning Hoseok, the one soul who has remained constant since childhood — placed it in his hands. No explanation, just a quiet glance and the flicker of nerves in his eyes.
It’s been forty-eight hours since that moment, and still Jungkook’s chest hums with a restlessness— butterflies fluttering alongside bees, wings clashing, hearts beating too loud, too fast.
It is not fear exactly, but it is not peace either.
He exhales again, long and weary, watching the condensation gather and melt against the glass.
The silence in the room is vast, stretching out like a second skin. His eyes lower to the letter once more; thick parchment, elegant script. Regal and so unmistakable.
He has reread the letter at least twenty times. Its words were few but impossible to ignore.
The King of Dalnara Kingdom requests your presence.
No reason, no polite request. Just that, a demand.
Jungkook lets out another sigh, heavier this time. The kind that sags in the lungs.
Tilting his head back against the stone wall beside the window, he closes his eyes for a breath or two. His fingers tighten slightly on the edges of the letter, as though he doesn’t realise he is still holding it.
Why him? Why a personal letter to him and not—
What can the King possibly want with someone like him, a showcase nobility tucked away in a palace wing?
He opens his eyes and stares once more at the hills where the mist still lingers. He feels like that mist himself— adrift and unanchored, seen but not truly known.
Jungkook huffs again; the sound is small but sharp in the stillness. His brow furrows, eyes narrowing at the parchment as though it might, under pressure, reveal more. But it still remains stubbornly mute, a complete mystery.
Outside, the dawn begins to brighten, chasing away the dark with soft streaks of amber. But inside the room, time moves slowly, not unlike honey— thick and heavy, as Jungkook remains frozen between curiosity and dread, longing and doubt.
The Kingdom awaits. And the letter...
“Don’t tell me you’re still mulling over the King’s invitation?”
Jungkook jerks out of his stupor, his brows snapping together. He turns around, already knowing the voice — equal parts insolence and affection.
“Do you mind?” He scowls at the unwelcome intruder lounging far too casually by the doorway.
Hoseok, ever the picture of untamed amusement, only smirks. His eyes gleam with mischief as he strolls into the room, whilst the morning light catches the slight bounce in his step.
“His Grace will have to excuse me,” he declares with a dramatic bow, “but it’s exceptionally riveting watching him flounder like a lost duckling.”
“I— I’m not floundering like a lost duckling!” Jungkook gasps, scandalised.
Hoseok raises both brows, the corner of his mouth twitching.
“Sure,” he says, plopping down on the velvet chair opposite him. “Whatever sails your boat, Your Highness.”
“Stop,” Jungkook groans, dragging a hand down his face.
But the way his lips pout ever so slightly, his expression caught somewhere between a sulk and a scowl, only makes Hoseok press his lips together harder, desperately restraining the chuckle bubbling up his throat.
He really does look like a disgruntled duckling.
Instead, Hoseok leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “So... What did you come up with?”
Jungkook blinks. “What?”
“I mean,” Hoseok waves a hand lazily, “what ridiculous theory did you cook up this time? You’ve had two whole days to spiral, I imagine you’ve got a list.”
Jungkook opens his mouth to protest; indignant, affronted, deeply royal.
“I do not—”
“Jungkook-ah,” Hoseok cuts in flatly, “you literally said the King wants to keep you hostage because he wants ransom money.”
“Well!” Jungkook sits up straighter, eyes wide. “It makes perfect sense!”
Hoseok looks at him. Just looks.
“The man could buy our kingdom twice and still have enough left over to build a third one out of gold,” he says dryly.
Jungkook pauses, then frowns. “Okay… I didn’t think from that angle.”
“I’d argue you didn’t think at all.”
“Hey!”
“Stop with the crazy theories and just send your reply already,” Hoseok sighs, flopping back against the chair. He throws an arm over his eyes in theatrical exasperation.
“But…” Jungkook’s voice softens as his fingers drift over the edge of the parchment in his lap, tracing the curve of the seal for the hundredth time.
Hoseok peeks out from under his arm, then sits up, sensing the shift in tone. “But what?”
Jungkook doesn’t answer immediately. He bites down on his lower lip, eyes flickering to the window, to the misty hills in the distance, then back to the letter. His throat works around words that don’t want to come.
“Gguk,” Hoseok murmurs gently, scooting closer until their knees nearly touch. “What is it? I know something’s weighing on you.”
Jungkook swallows, fingers tightening on the parchment.
“It’s the King,” he whispers at last.
Hoseok leans in. “Yes?”
Jungkook looks at him, really looks, and then down at the letter again.
The seal catches the light.
The mist outside stirs.
And something inside him shifts.
Jungkook exhales, long and low, eyes flickering from the letter to Hoseok.
“I overheard Appa and Hyung talking,” he says, voice quieter now, “about the newly formed alliance between Nagaura and Baoyang.”
Hoseok’s expression tightens. “Jungkook—”
“I know I’m not supposed to meddle,” Jungkook rushes on, “or eavesdrop, or listen to things that aren’t mine to hear.” He swallows. “But Hobi… this is my kingdom too.”
Hoseok stills at that, the gentle protest dying on his lips. He nods slowly, his expression softening, and gestures for Jungkook to continue.
Jungkook lowers his gaze. His fingers, ever restless, trace the edge of the envelope again. The wax seal is slightly worn now from nervous touches.
“I heard them say both kingdoms have their eyes set on ours,” he murmurs, peeking up through his lashes. “They didn’t say it directly, but… it was there. In their tone. In what they didn’t say.”
He pauses, voice dipping lower. “It’s not looking good, Hobi.”
Hoseok frowns, brows drawing in tight. “But Yoongi hyung said—”
“Do you think he’d ever burden you with this?” Jungkook interrupts, his tone sharper now, tinged with frustration and something else… fear, maybe. “You know how he is. He doesn’t show worry. Not if he can hide it behind strategy and sealed lips.”
Hoseok sighs, scrubbing a hand down his face. “In fact, I know he would. And if he hasn’t yet… then it means they have a plan. Gguk, you don’t need to carry this on your own.”
But Jungkook only presses his lips into a line, the silence between them stretching.
His eyes remain fixed on the letter, fingertips tracing lazy circles over the crest. Not opening it again. Not yet.
Hoseok watches him with a resigned expression. “Jungkook-ah?”
No response.
The silence hums.
Then Hoseok groans, closing his eyes as if summoning strength from the heavens. He presses his fingertips to his temples, as though bracing for battle.
“Okay,” he mutters. “Hit me with it. What have you planned?”
Jungkook finally looks up, and for the first time that morning, his expression shifts— a grin tugging at the corners of his lips. Mischief glints in his eyes like moonlight on water.
It’s the look that has preceded every disaster since they were eight.
“May the Gods save me,” Hoseok whispers to the ceiling, as though it might intervene. “You’ve got that look again.”
Jungkook leans forward, practically vibrating with the thrill of a half-formed idea.
“What if,” he begins, voice low and conspiratorial, “what if I go to Dalnara not as a Prince… but as someone else?”
Hoseok’s eyes widen. “Excuse me?!”
Jungkook’s grin only widens. “Just to observe. To learn the truth behind the invitation. If the King wants something more than parley, I’ll find out before they even realise who I am.”
“You want to sneak into the most powerful kingdom in the realm under a false identity. Again?”
“Well, when you say it like that, it sounds ridiculous,” Jungkook frowns. “But yes.”
Hoseok slumps back in the chair. “No. I refuse. That one time was enough.”
Jungkook frowns. “But—”
“No, Jungkook-ah,” Hoseok mutters, glaring at the heavens again. “I refuse to let either of us do this. Not this. That one time we somehow escaped, and look what landed on us!”
“Well,” Jungkook says, already reaching for a fresh sheet of parchment. “Time for Plan B.”
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
The room smells faintly of lavender and ink. It’s an odd pairing, but somehow fitting. Scrolls, scraps of fabric, and half-spilt boxes of pins and buttons clutter the once-neat study, the table now buried beneath the chaos of creation. Candlelight flickers in the corner, painting long shadows across the walls, as if even the flames are reluctant witnesses to the madness unfolding within.
Hoseok sits with a bolt of deep navy cloth draped across his lap, needle in hand, and expression pinched. “I swear to the Moon Gods, Gguk, if you rip this again trying to pirouette, I’ll stitch your cloak shut and toss you to the wolves.”
“I wasn’t pirouetting,” Jungkook says, affronted, one leg raised on a stool as he fumbles with the boot strap. “I was testing the mobility of the trousers. For running. In case we’re chased.”
“You’re a royal. You’ve never run from anything but a history lesson.”
“Exactly, which is why I must practise.”
Hoseok groans dramatically and jabs the needle into the cloth a little harder than necessary. “Tell me again why I agreed to this.”
Jungkook glances over, mischief curling at the corners of his lips. “Because you secretly love danger, and you love me, and you couldn’t possibly bear the thought of me gallivanting into another kingdom without supervision.”
“Correction: I don’t trust you not to fall face-first into a political disaster... Or off a horse seeing some fruit. Possibly both.”
Jungkook grins, teeth glinting.
He crosses to the mirror and peers at himself— not the boyish prince draped in silks and gold, but a stranger now. Loose linen shirt, faded cloak, hair slightly mussed. A common traveller, or a merchant’s son, perhaps... Or a scholar’s apprentice. His usual polished grace has been swapped for something simpler, quieter. Unthreatening and anonymous.
It feels strange and exhilarating.
“What name should I use?” he asks suddenly, turning over the thought in his hands like a polished stone.
Hoseok, still bent over the threadwork, hums. “Something forgettable, not too pretty.”
Jungkook gasps. “Rude.”
“Truth.”
Jungkook thinks for a moment. “What about... Jian?”
Hoseok raises a brow. “You just want something that sounds mysterious and charming.”
“It is charming, isn’t it?” Jungkook murmurs to himself, adjusting the collar in the mirror.
“And me?” Hoseok asks, without looking up.
Jungkook studies him for a beat, then says, “You’ll be my cousin, or my manservant. Whichever role lets you scold me in public without raising suspicion.”
“So… both,” Hoseok deadpans.
“Exactly.”
Hoseok finishes the hem with a satisfied nod, then tosses the tunic at Jungkook’s head. “There. You’re officially a nobody.”
Jungkook slips it on, his expression sobering slightly as he smooths the fabric down. “It’s strange, isn’t it?” he murmurs. “Wearing someone else’s life.”
Hoseok pauses as he looks up. “We’re not becoming other people, Gguk. Just… stepping outside of who we’re expected to be, just for a while.”
Jungkook’s gaze drifts back to the window. Outside, the moonlight glimmers silver across the palace courtyard, just like it always does.
Tomorrow, he will be in another kingdom, meeting its people, gathering some intel, and nothing would ever be quite the same again.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
Surrounded on all sides by mountains and rivers— save for a single open flank— Dalnara Kingdom sits like a tigress on a high ledge, taut with elegance, silent in its strength. From the tower’s arched window, the land spills out beneath the castle like a living tapestry, threaded with silver rivers and veiled in the soft breath of spring winds.
To the north, the Baekdu Mountains pierce the sky— sharp, and unmoved by time. Their snow-capped peaks glint under the midday sun like shards of broken crown jewels, casting shadows that fall long and cold across the lower slopes. They stand not just as guardians, but as warnings: impassable and unrelenting. No kingdom from the north has ever breached them. At least, not without losing its pride, or its army.
Beneath the mountains, the River Sayun glistens like a blade, wide and swift. Its roar is a constant murmur even from up here. It coils around the kingdom’s eastern border like a lover too dangerous to touch. All the while, to the west, the Ithal River moves darker, slower— its banks choked by dense woods, its secrets deeper. Locals call it the “Watcher’s Vein.” They say it remembers every life it’s claimed.
And to the south… ah, the south.
Taehyung’s gaze lingers there the longest.
The Saekdong Plains stretch open and golden, the tall grasses bowing in waves beneath the wind. Beautiful, yes. But beautiful things rarely come without a cost. Beyond those plains lies Wolguk Kingdom— once a proud buffer between Dalnara and the southern kingdoms, now a cracked shell of what it used to be.
And the cracks are spreading.
Taehyung leans against the stone sill, fingers curled tight around the edge. The letter rests on the table behind him, unopened, but heavy as a sword across the back.
He already knows what it says. Or worse, what it doesn’t.
Whispers travel faster than pigeons, and he’s heard plenty.
Factions rising, borders shifting, allies turning cautious, and enemies growing bold.
If Wolguk falls, those pretty southern plains will turn into a road. A direct one. Right up to Dalnara’s gates.
He exhales sharply, the air cutting his throat like cold steel.
A knock splits the silence behind him; two quick raps, familiar, almost lazy.
He doesn’t look away from the window.
“You could have knocked louder. I nearly mistook you for someone polite.”
“You say the sweetest things when you’re brooding,” comes the dry reply.
Taehyung finally turns, just as his elder brother steps inside, a wine-red cloak trailing behind him like spilt ink. His hair is loosely tied back, and his expression is already exasperated— classic.
Seokjin takes one look at the letter on the table and sighs, long and theatrical. “Another love note from General Han?”
“Shut up,” Taehyung mutters.
Seokjin smirks.
“Then why the long face, Your Majesty?” Seokjin drawls as he strolls into the room, the gold accents on his cloak catching the late afternoon light.
Taehyung doesn’t turn. “Go away, hyung.”
“No, seriously. What’s wrong, Tae?”
“Don’t call me that,” Taehyung grumbles, already pouting.
“As your older brother, your tantrums and titles hold very little sway over me,” Seokjin shoots back without missing a beat, coming to stand beside him like he owns the place — which, given their bloodline, he almost does.
Taehyung sighs dramatically and turns with a roll of his eyes. “Don’t you have better things to do? Like bothering your equally dramatic husband?”
“No. Being the selfless, considerate brother that I am, I’ve decided to grace you with my presence instead,” Seokjin says, hand to chest, face angled like a martyr in stained glass.
“May the Gods help me, then,” Taehyung mutters, scrubbing his face with his palms.
“I am his favourite, let’s be honest,” Seokjin says brightly, sliding onto the edge of the table.
Taehyung’s lips twitch, and he immediately tries to school his face into something more kingly.
“Ha! I saw that!” Seokjin exclaims, pointing.
“Saw what?” Taehyung tilts his head with faux innocence, amusement beginning to glow in his eyes.
“You were smiling. Like, a real smile. You’re slipping.”
“Your age is catching up to you. Get your eyes checked, hyung.” Taehyung rolls his eyes.
“You’re such an ass.”
“Hey, that is no way to speak to your king,” Taehyung says with mock affront.
“But it is the only way to speak to my little brother,” Seokjin grins, victorious.
Taehyung feigns another eye roll, but the tension in his shoulders eases a little.
Seokjin leans in, expression softening. “Come on, tell me what it is. You’ve been pacing holes into this rug since dawn.”
Taehyung hesitates for a moment, then moves toward his desk, the playful energy shifting into something muted. He picks up the parchment, fingertips smoothing over the broken seal.
“This arrived early today.”
Seokjin straightens, eyes narrowing slightly as he takes the letter. “Okay…?”
“I sent a proposal to the Wolguk Kingdom,” Taehyung says slowly, like the words taste foreign on his tongue, “for an alliance.”
Seokjin blinks. “You what?”
Taehyung doesn’t answer immediately, for he’s already halfway to the window again, watching the light turn gold on the distant fields.
“I thought it might help,” he says after a pause. “Stabilise things. Keep the south from crumbling.”
“But why now… and right away?” Seokjin presses, brow furrowed. “You could’ve brought it to the council. To me, you know, someone who deals with this.”
Taehyung huffs. “You both sound the same.”
“Who’s both? Tae, stop speaking in riddles.”
Taehyung allows himself a small laugh, dry and fleeting. “You and the Prince.”
Seokjin tilts his head. “The Crown Prince, or...?”
“The other one,” Taehyung says, gaze steady. “Jeon Jungkook.”
“Oh,” Seokjin blinks. “Oh.”
Taehyung gives him a deadpan look. “Have you forgotten there are more words in your vocabulary than ‘oh’?”
“I just didn’t expect him,” Seokjin admits, setting the letter down slowly. “I mean, yes, he’s intelligent, charismatic, absurdly good-looking—”
Taehyung groans. “Hyung—”
“—and strangely obsessed with food, which I find mildly concerning— but I didn’t realise you’d started writing him secret letters in your spare time.”
“They weren’t secret.”
Seokjin raises a brow. “Did anyone else know?”
“No.”
“Then they were secret.”
Taehyung narrows his eyes. “I liked you better when you were annoying your husband.”
“And I liked you better before you started catching feelings for foreign royals in the middle of a political meltdown,” Seokjin snaps back, though the edge of humour in his voice dulls the warning.
Taehyung sinks into his chair with a soft groan.
“Not that! It’s not like that,” he rasps, half shouting.
“Sure, sure,” Seokjin parrots. “Secret letters but not like that. Yeah, I believe you.”
Taehyung lifts his gaze, exasperated. “Seriously, it’s nothing like that. Only for some simple alliance or something akin to that.”
Seokjin merely frowns, stepping further into the chamber as his robes trail soundlessly over the stone floor. “Then, why him? Aren’t you breaking etiquette by sending a personal letter to him, instead of the Crown Prince or the King?”
Taehyung, still by the arched window, exhales heavily. His gaze drops to the table where that parchment lies— creased at the corners, sealed once, now opened, its contents committed to memory. A faint breeze stirs the edges, like the letter itself is impatient to be read again.
“I had heard reports of foreign movements. Strangers spotted in our markets, at the borders. Whispers that didn’t sit right with me.”
Seokjin’s posture straightens subtly, the familiar instinct of a soldier rising beneath the silk and diplomacy. “I’m sorry, but I’m not following you?”
“When I asked the General to look deeper, to sift through the reports—” Taehyung turns to meet his brother’s eyes, “—we discovered something that caught me off guard.”
“What?” Seokjin asks, his brow furrowing with curiosity.
Taehyung allows a slow, almost reluctant smile to tug at the corner of his lips. “They weren’t agents of any kingdom. Not Nagaura, nor Baoyang. Not mercenaries either. They were independent, tied to no banners.”
Seokjin tilts his head. “So who were they?”
“Jeon Jungkook’s men,” Taehyung replies, voice dropping lower. “His own personal network of spies, embedded across borders, unofficially and wholly untraceable. And loyal only to him.”
There’s a brief moment where the air stills.
Seokjin blinks. “That’s—”
“Unusual,” Taehyung interjects. “Courageous, even. But dangerous.”
Seokjin crosses his arms, a thousand thoughts flitting across his face. “He’s not the crown prince, Tae. Why go through such lengths? Why build a network that large, that silent?”
“That’s what struck me,” Taehyung says, eyes drifting toward the low-burning fire. “The only reasoning that made sense was that he’s not gathering power. He’s gathering the truth. First-hand information that’s not filtered through courtiers or ministers.”
“He’s assessing the chessboard for himself,” Seokjin murmurs.
“Exactly.” Taehyung turns back to him. “It’s intelligent and strategic. Honestly, it impressed me, but also made me uneasy, because I cannot be sure if his motives are to protect— or to seize.”
Seokjin’s voice is careful now. “You can’t accuse him, not without igniting questions you’re not ready to answer.”
“Right. That’s why I didn’t confront him. I didn’t write officially, nor did I alert their Crown Prince. I used his own channels— his spies— to send the letter. Quietly.”
Seokjin’s gaze narrows with both concern and intrigue. “You went through the shadows to reach him.”
“I needed him to know I see him, and I’m watching,” Taehyung replies. “But I also left it in his hands; how he chooses to present this.”
“Which makes him responsible for the consequences,” Seokjin finishes, breath catching.
Taehyung nods once. “As King, I cannot turn a blind eye to such movements, but I also can’t stir unrest, internally or with our neighbours. So I extended the invitation. Framed it as a private conversation about an alliance, given the sensitivity of politics.”
Seokjin is silent for a beat, then lets out a low whistle. “Gods. When did you become so damn pragmatic?”
“When I realised our southern flank may soon be exposed if Wolguk falls,” Taehyung says quietly. “And we cannot afford to lose Saekdong. If that buffer crumbles, the gates to Dalnara will be wide open.”
Seokjin paces for a moment, then mutters, “And what if Jeon Jungkook doesn’t come alone? What if he’s playing a game deeper than we know?”
“Then it’s all the more reason to have him under our roof, where we can watch him closely.”
A beat passes. Seokjin glances again at the letter.
“Still, Tae… you’re putting a lot of faith into a stranger.”
“I’m not,” Taehyung answers. “I’m giving him the rope. What he does with it, climb or hang, is up to him.”
A bark of disbelief escapes Seokjin as he shakes his head. “Gods. You sound like Appa now. All riddles and brooding and eerie monarch talk. What happened to my wide-eyed, loud-mouthed little pumpkin?”
Taehyung scoffs and swats at his brother’s shoulder. “That pumpkin grew teeth.”
“And a throne,” Seokjin grumbles dramatically. “Fine. What do you want me to do?”
“See to the preparations. Make sure it’s discreet. No banners, no announcement. And—” Taehyung smirks, “—be there when he arrives.”
“Why me?”
“Because you’ve got the mouth of a diplomat and the instincts of a nosy aunt. If anyone can charm answers out of him without ever asking a question, it’s you.”
Seokjin’s face lights with pride. “Well, you do know how to flatter your elders.”
“Out,” Taehyung groans, shoving him toward the door.
“I’m going, I’m going! But I expect a feast for my efforts!”
“You’ll get boiled oats and a curt nod,” Taehyung nods.
“Is this how you treat your favourite brother?” Seokjin cries over his shoulder.
“You’re my only brother, Jin.”
“Still counts!”
The door swings shut behind him with a muted thud. Taehyung remains by the window a moment longer, his gaze returning to the horizon, where the road winds from Saekdong Plains toward the heart of Dalnara.
Somewhere along that path, Jeon Jungkook is coming.
And so are the answers.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
Jungkook bites his lower lip as he peers out of the carriage window, eyes narrowing slightly against the golden sunlight filtering through the lace-curtained glass.
The palace of Dalnara rises ahead— an elegant sprawl of stone and glass nestled between forested hills. Its towers stretch skyward like fingers carved from ivory. The flags fluttering atop the highest points bear the sun-and-serpent insignia of Dalnara, bright against the spring-blue sky. It’s beautiful, frighteningly so. Regal and imposing, but not in a cold way. More like a sleeping beast, quiet and still… but very much alive.
Jungkook’s gaze lingers on the sprawling gardens flanking the path— rows of deep maroon roses and white camellias blooming in choreographed chaos. Marble statues stand half-hidden between hedgerows, their faces worn soft by time and wind. A pair of sentries on horseback stand by the gates, armour gleaming in the sun, their stillness unsettling in its precision.
He swallows.
“Cat caught your tongue now?” Hoseok’s voice cuts through the haze of Jungkook’s thoughts like a blade, teasing but gentle. “You were practically buzzing with nerves and opinions back home.”
Jungkook squints at him, nose scrunching slightly.
“It certainly did not,” he says, voice clipped and full of mock haughtiness. “I was not expecting it to be so... public.”
Hoseok chuckles, his eyes glinting with amusement. “Whatever you say, Your Grace.”
Rolling his eyes, Jungkook leans slightly forward, pretending to ignore the fond tone in Hoseok’s words.
He shifts uncomfortably, the weight of the layers he’s wearing suddenly far too noticeable.
His outfit is plain. Well, plain by royal standards. Muted forest green with embroidered silver vines curling along the cuffs, no crest on his chest, no diadem in his hair. Nothing to mark him as a prince.
Just another emissary.
A heartbeat later, the carriage begins to slow.
The horses’ hooves clatter less against stone and more against packed gravel as they draw nearer to the inner courtyard. The massive palace gates, tall iron things that spiral like vines and flame, swing open with a groan that echoes through the air like a warning bell.
Jungkook sits straighter, suddenly aware of how fast his heart is pounding.
The carriage rolls to a gentle stop.
A footman raps sharply against the door.
“We have arrived at the Palace of Dalnara,” he announces with practised formality.
Jungkook stares at the polished wood for a moment. Then, almost unconsciously, he exhales through his nose and smooths his palms down the front of his trousers. The fabric wrinkles under his touch, but it doesn’t help the sweat on his fingers.
“You got this, Jungkook-ah,” Hoseok says softly beside him, reaching over to squeeze his hand.
Jungkook turns, startled by the sudden switch in tone. There’s no teasing now, just warmth and steady reassurance.
“You didn’t tease me,” Jungkook murmurs.
“Should I, Your Grace?” Hoseok replies with a grin that doesn’t quite mask his own nerves.
Jungkook lets out a short laugh, the tension in his shoulders easing just a little.
Then he clears his throat, lifting his chin. He reaches up and knocks twice on the inner door of the carriage; the signal for the guards to open it.
The door swings outward with a smooth click.
Light floods in.
And with it, the sound of fluttering banners, the rustle of guards adjusting their formation, and somewhere, the low hum of conversation as Dalnara’s welcoming committee assembles beyond the steps.
Jungkook takes one last breath.
Then he steps out.
His boots hit the courtyard stone with a quiet thud. The sun warms his skin. The breeze carries the faint scent of cypress and iron.
He descends the small steps of the carriage, movements practised and unhurried. His eyes scan the scene before him— servants in crisp uniforms, guards in dark crimson armour, and a small cluster of nobles waiting off to the side.
Their eyes are all on him, but he’s searching for just one.
And there, halfway down the marble staircase leading into the palace proper, stands the King.
Kim Taehyung stands out effortlessly, even amid the finery of his court.
Clad in a deep purple robe that catches the light with every breath of wind, he wears his crown like a halo and carries his ornate jewellery as if born with it carved into his skin. There’s a sculpted kind of poise to him— shoulders back, chin lifted, expression unreadable except for the faint, knowing smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
Jungkook swallows.
He looks... unreal.
Not in a fragile, delicate way. No, there’s a quiet danger to Taehyung’s stillness. The kind that doesn’t have to raise a sword to command obedience. He looks like a man who chooses calm because he knows what storms he’s capable of.
Jungkook inhales sharply, then lets it out slowly.
You’re a Jeon and a Prince, he reminds himself. Walk like it.
The guards guiding him stop at the foot of the steps, halberds clinking as they pull back in practised synchronicity.
Taehyung’s gaze meets Jungkook’s, unperturbed and curious. Like a puzzle being considered, not yet solved.
Jungkook’s spine straightens instinctively.
Hoseok steps up beside him but says nothing. There’s a certain hush in the ambience now, like the pause before a duel or the instant before lightning strikes.
“Prince Jungkook,” Taehyung begins, his voice smooth like sun-warmed velvet, “it’s a pleasure to finally receive you in Dalnara. You bestow great honour with your presence.”
Jungkook meets his gaze, offering a perfectly measured smile. “The pleasure is mine, Your Majesty. I must say, the sight of your kingdom does justice to the songs we’ve heard of it.”
Taehyung’s eyes glint with something unreadable. Amusement, perhaps, or curiosity. “You’re generous with your words, Prince. I imagine it takes quite a view to impress someone from the river-cradled heartlands of Wolguk.”
“I find beauty reveals itself in many forms,” Jungkook replies smoothly. “It depends on the eye and the heart behind it.”
For a moment, the faintest flicker of surprise crosses Taehyung’s face, but it’s gone as quickly as it came.
“Well then,” he says, stepping aside with a graceful sweep of his arm, “if you’ll follow me, I’ll show you to your quarters. I’m sure the road was long, and rest is well earned.”
“Of course, Your Majesty.”
Jungkook falls in step beside him.
The palace welcomes him with a breath of cool air and a flood of sunlight cascading through arched windows. It smells faintly of citrus and aged parchment. The corridors are a quiet marvel— high ceilings painted in delicate florals, gilded columns carved with scenes of war and peace, and murals that seem to whisper history along the length of every hall.
They pass a handful of servants and courtiers who bow as they go, murmuring behind their hands as soon as Jungkook passes. He pretends not to hear them, though he feels their stares like heat on the back of his neck.
“Your chambers,” Taehyung says, stopping before a pair of tall, intricately inlaid doors that shimmer with pearl and obsidian.
“This wing is kept quiet for visiting dignitaries,” he continues. “Your companion will be housed in the east wing. I trust that won’t be an issue?”
Jungkook glances at Hoseok, who gives the faintest nod of approval.
“Not at all, Your Majesty. I appreciate your consideration.”
“Good,” Taehyung replies. “I’ll take my leave then. Make yourself comfortable. We’ll speak again soon.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty,” Jungkook says, bowing just low enough to show respect, but not submission. When he looks up again, Taehyung has already turned, his cloak catching the light like a silken flame.
He walks like he owns the world, Jungkook muses.
Because perhaps… he does.
Only once the king disappears down the corridor does Jungkook finally let out a breath he hadn’t realised he was holding.
He turns and pushes open the doors to his chamber.
It’s more of a suite than a room. High ceilings with coffered beams, walls painted a soft shade of dove grey with accents of gold. The bed is large, dressed in fine linens and embroidered silks. A crystal decanter of wine waits on a low table, beside a platter of fruit and honey-dipped figs. A massive window takes up nearly the entire far wall, offering a breathtaking view of the inner gardens and the bustling lower city beyond.
“So?” Hoseok murmurs, stepping in behind him.
Jungkook hums distractedly, too preoccupied as he slowly circles the room, his fingers trailing along the curve of a carved pillar.
“What do you think about the ruler?” Hoseok asks again, voice tinged with curiosity… and a hint of mischief.
Jungkook halts at the window, his gaze stretching out over Dalnara.
Children run across the stone-paved square below; merchants shout cheerfully from colourful stalls; the occasional guard strolls past on horseback. It’s a kingdom in motion. Alive.
“Prepare a bath for me,” he says at last. “I need to relax before we begin.”
Hoseok raises a brow. “No rest?”
Jungkook’s eyes remain on the world outside.
“A bath will do. Tiredness fades,” he says softly. “But first impressions... they last.”
And with that, he turns back into the room. His mind is already whirring with questions, calculations, and the image of a king who speaks softly, smiles gently... and watches like a man who never blinks.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
“I heard the Prince has arrived,” Namjoon murmurs, his voice low and thoughtful as his boots echo lightly against the polished stone floor of the west wing.
The corridor is washed in soft afternoon light filtering through latticed windows, casting warm geometric shadows across the floor.
Beside him, Seokjin hums, a little distracted as he adjusts the heavy cuffs of his robe. “And apparently, he’s very beautiful. The entire palace is humming about it. Even the garden boys were gossiping by the rose hedges.”
Namjoon chuckles softly, casting him a sideways glance. “You sound more invested than I expected.”
Seokjin arches a brow, lips twitching. “Well, one must keep up with courtly affairs.”
The two pause outside the study, ornate doors of dark wood carved with the royal crest towering before them. Seokjin nods at the guards, who bow and push open the doors with a creak softened by age and use.
The study is expansive yet welcoming. Shelves stretch along the walls, filled with leather-bound books and neatly rolled scrolls. The pale sunlight spills generously through the tall windows, pooling on the hardwood floors and warming the pale rugs underfoot. The fireplace is unlit, the room already basking in natural light. Carved benches and long reading tables are tucked into alcoves, while a writing desk serves as a command centre in the middle of the space.
At it, as expected, sits Taehyung— his head bowed over documents, a pen in hand, and furrowed brows betraying deep focus.
“I was wondering when you’d pop up,” he murmurs without looking up, though the corner of his mouth twitches knowingly.
Seokjin doesn’t take the bait. Instead, he strides over and settles himself directly across from his younger brother, his royal robes fanning slightly as he sits. “Tell me now, how did it go?”
Namjoon follows more calmly, his gaze sweeping over the study before settling beside his husband with quiet curiosity. “We figured we’d get more from you than from the staff; apparently, they’re still breathless from the Prince’s smile.”
Taehyung sighs, but there’s amusement dancing in his eyes as he leans back. “It was just a greeting. Mere introductions. What gossip-worthy thing could possibly happen during that?”
Unbothered, Seokjin cocks his head. “How does he look? Is he really that pretty?”
Namjoon watches as Taehyung pauses— mouth parting, then pressing shut again as though a dozen words collided behind his teeth and none came out smoothly. He looks away, suddenly and suspiciously interested in the grain of the desk.
Seokjin narrows his eyes. “Well?”
Taehyung swallows. His mind unhelpfully conjures the image again: those eyes— like polished onyx at midnight— framed by the tousled fall of dark hair, skin kissed and flushed from the sun, but glowing with something more. Jungkook had walked as if the world belonged to him, but greeted it with the softness of a ripple on still water. Unshaken and so present.
“He is,” Taehyung finally mutters, his voice uncharacteristically soft.
“And?” Seokjin leans in, as if trying to sniff out the rest of the thought from Taehyung’s silence.
But Namjoon, ever the steady hand, speaks before Seokjin can needle further. “When are we meeting him?”
“Later today,” Taehyung replies, grateful for the pivot. “There’s a council meeting—”
“You’re seeing him at the council meeting first?!” Seokjin interrupts, scandalized. “Before you’ve shared a meal? A drink? At least a polite sit-down over tea?”
Taehyung flounders. “Let me complete—”
“This is not how I raised you!” Seokjin tuts dramatically, standing up and flicking imaginary dust from his sleeves like a disappointed schoolteacher. “Where are your manners? He’s a royal guest, not a merchant here for tariffs!”
Taehyung opens his mouth to defend himself, but Seokjin has already turned to Namjoon. “We’ll host him properly. If our resident monarch has forgotten basic decorum, then we shall take the reins.”
Namjoon tilts his head, lips quirking into something dangerously close to a smile. “Yes, dear. We’ll make the arrangements.”
“And perhaps rescue the young man from Taehyung’s habit of blunt diplomacy.”
Taehyung groans under his breath, slumping slightly in his seat. “He didn’t seem to mind.”
Seokjin narrows his eyes suspiciously. “Didn’t he?”
Namjoon is already chuckling quietly as they exit the study. The door closes behind them with a soft thud, and as they walk down the corridor once more, Namjoon casts a glance at his husband, a smirk pulling at his mouth.
“What?!” Seokjin exclaims, though the sparkle in his eyes betrays his amusement.
“Well done on the theatrics back there,” he murmurs, lips twitching as they make their way down the softly lit hallway.
The marble beneath their feet is cool and polished to a mirror-like sheen, reflecting flickers of torchlight dancing across the stone walls.
Seokjin feigns innocence. “I was merely doing my duty as a brother and host.”
“Mhm,” Namjoon hums, clearly unconvinced. “And it has nothing to do with you being deeply curious about how flustered Taehyung looked when we asked about the prince?”
“He was so red!” Seokjin whispers gleefully. “Did you see the way his ears flushed?! He looked like a child caught stealing jam!”
“You think Tae likes him?” Namjoon’s brow furrows as he discreetly gestures to a nearby guard to send word to Prince Jungkook.
Seokjin throws him a grin, smug and bright. “No. I don’t think, Joon. I know. He had that look on his face… like he was trying not to smile, but his soul was giggling.”
Namjoon only chuckles, shaking his head. “So… why didn’t you greet Prince Jungkook, anyway?”
At that, Seokjin huffs. “That’s the funny part. It was supposed to be me, everything was planned. Then this morning, Taehyung conveniently tells the staff there’s been a change, that he’ll do it himself and it has to be a public affair. Claimed I had ‘too many matters’ to deal with.”
Namjoon laughs now, low and warm. “So he stole your greeting?”
“Like a thief in the night,” Seokjin deadpans. “And don’t think I didn’t notice how early he dressed today. You know he’s not a morning person unless he’s up to something.”
Namjoon hums thoughtfully, a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. “Well. Looks like our king may have more than politics on his mind.”
“And we,” Seokjin says brightly, looping his arm with Namjoon’s, “are going to find out exactly what.”
Namjoon huffs a laugh as they enter the grand dining room.
The space is rich with golden warmth. Sunlight spills through wide arched windows, falling across the gleaming surface of a long ebony table. The tableware is elegant, simple gold-trimmed china and fine crystal. A gentle floral fragrance lingers in the air, likely from the fresh arrangements on the sideboards.
Seokjin slides into his seat beside the head of the table and turns to a nearby servant. “You’ve already informed the Prince, haven’t you?”
“Yes, Your Grace,” the servant replies, bowing slightly. “And the chef has prepared the meal per your request. Dishes both native to Dalnara and delicacies from the Wolguk’s provinces.”
“Perfect.” Seokjin beams and turns to Namjoon again, who has taken his seat to the right. “Now, let’s see if I’m correct—”
“Or correct?” Namjoon arches an eyebrow, amused.
“Exactly.” Seokjin winks.
Before Namjoon can roll his eyes, a guard steps in with a subtle bow.
"His Grace, Prince Jeon Jungkook, is arriving."
The double doors open smoothly, and all conversation quietens; the mood shifts.
Jungkook steps inside with an understated elegance. His presence doesn’t demand attention; it draws it in, gently but inevitably. His shoulders are set, his chin lifted with calm assurance, not pride. His hair is brushed back from his forehead, smooth and soft, revealing the thoughtful lines of his face, the curve of his brow catching the light.
The sun finds him easily, casting a warm sheen over the deep navy of his robes, where silver threads glimmer faintly at the seams, the crest of his house stitched with care, not opulence. A few rings, chosen with purpose rather than show, catch the light as he moves.
He walks with the silence of someone who has been taught to listen as much as to lead. And still, in the calm depths of his gaze, there’s something undeniably alive. A flicker of curiosity, a trace of wonder, like he’s still quietly discovering the world, even as it watches him.
Both Seokjin and Namjoon rise in welcome.
“It’s finally so nice to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you, Jungkook-ssi,” Seokjin says warmly, a practised host, but his eyes glint with something far more curious than cordiality.
Jungkook bows slightly in return, his voice smooth but respectful. “The pleasure is mine, Your Grace.”
As he approaches, Seokjin gestures to the seat across from him. “Please, have a seat. Forgive me for not introducing myself earlier. An unfortunate mix-up in the welcome ceremony.”
Jungkook offers a polite smile as he sits. “There’s no need for an apology. I appreciate being received so graciously.”
As the servants begin laying out the dishes— steamed rice, seared fish glazed in honeyed soy, and a variety of herbs and vegetables both native and foreign— Seokjin continues the introductions.
“I’m Kim Seokjin, Taehyung’s older brother,” he says with a proud smile, gesturing toward Namjoon beside him. “And this is my husband, Kim Namjoon.”
Jungkook bows his head respectfully to them both. “An honour.”
Namjoon inclines his head, a thoughtful smile playing on his lips. “We’ve heard much about you, Jungkook-ssi.”
Jungkook’s lips twitch slightly. “Hopefully more good than bad.”
Seokjin grins. “All very good. In fact, you’ve become quite the topic of discussion since your arrival.”
“Is that so?” Jungkook asks with a feigned innocence that doesn’t quite hide the glint of amusement in his eyes.
“Oh yes,” Seokjin leans forward slightly, as if sharing a secret. “The palace staff already adores you. I had to pry information out of my steward before the entire kitchen got wind of your supposed ‘mysterious smile.’”
Jungkook’s brows rise. “I wasn’t aware I was smiling mysteriously.”
“That makes it even worse,” Seokjin groans dramatically. “You don’t even know your own charm. We’re all doomed.”
Namjoon sighs, though there's amusement in it. “Ignore him. He thrives on palace gossip. Though… he’s not wrong. You’ve made quite the impression.”
Jungkook smiles modestly, setting down his cup. “I didn’t realize quiet meals came with background narration in Dalnara.”
Seokjin grins, delighted.
“Only for the interesting ones,” he promises, popping a grape into his mouth.
Namjoon smiles. “Well, let’s take that as the cue to start with this meal. We took the liberty of ordering some Wolguk regional favourites. You must tell us if they hold up.”
“I’ll be sure to,” Jungkook replies, clearly a bit more at ease now.
Seokjin settles back in his seat, watching Jungkook lift his glass to sip the floral wine. The boy— no, the man— moves with grace, but there’s steel beneath it. Unshaken and unbowed. His presence is like a current beneath still water.
He glances at Namjoon, who meets his gaze knowingly.
And just for a moment, Seokjin smiles to himself.
Oh yes. Taehyung is in trouble.
“So, Jungkook-ssi, I’ve heard…” Seokjin begins, picking up his goblet with an amused gleam in his eye, “you’ve come to our kingdom not just to enjoy the scenery, but perhaps to negotiate something more... delicate.”
Namjoon gives his husband a look— half warning, half resigned affection— before turning his eyes to Jungkook with a smile that is far gentler. “He means to say, we’re glad you’re here. Dalnara hasn’t hosted a prince of your stature in quite some time.”
Jungkook chuckles lightly. “I’m the one honoured. And I’m afraid I must thank the scenery either way; it’s hard to ignore when it’s this breathtaking.”
Seokjin hums, swirling his drink before setting it down with an amused tilt of his head. “I’m sure you’ve seen far grander in your own lands.”
“Perhaps,” Jungkook concedes, glancing out the tall window where the kingdom’s mountains painted silhouettes against the dusk. “But beauty isn’t always in grandeur, Your Grace. Sometimes it’s in detail.”
Namjoon raises a brow at that, clearly intrigued. “That’s a thoughtful answer for a prince trained and surrounded with politics.”
Jungkook smiles faintly. “Maybe because I was trained first in observation. Politics came much, much later.”
A beat of silence follows. Even the clink of plates and silverware from the servants has dimmed to a respectful quiet. Jungkook’s gaze, dark and unreadable, drifts across the table... and for just a flicker of a moment, Namjoon swears he sees it shift; a barely-there glance toward the empty chair at the head of the table.
Taehyung’s seat.
“He’s not joining us?” Jungkook asks casually, though the question carries an undertone of curiosity he doesn’t quite manage to mask.
Seokjin’s lips twitch. “Oh, he’ll come. He’s just fashionably late when he doesn’t want to seem eager.”
Namjoon coughs lightly, giving Seokjin a pointed look. “What he means to say is the King has duties—”
“—but none more important than making sure you’re settled,” a new voice cuts in from the doorway.
All three turn toward it.
There, framed in the soft golden glow of the sconces, stands Taehyung. He’s changed from his court robes into a slightly more casual royal ensemble— deep blue silks with gold embroidery curling like ivy at the edges. His hair is swept back, crown absent, but his presence is no less commanding.
“Your Majesty,” Jungkook stands instinctively, his chair scraping softly against the floor.
“Please,” Taehyung waves it off with a nod. “Don’t let me interrupt.”
He strides in, each step measured, yet natural. His gaze flits to his brother, catching the smirk tugging at Seokjin’s lips, then to Namjoon— who simply offers a look that says, I warned you. And finally, to Jungkook, whose expression is a perfect mask of diplomacy... except for his eyes. Those burn a touch brighter now.
“I’m glad you joined us,” Taehyung says as he takes his seat at the head of the table. “I was told the conversation was already getting interesting.”
“Oh, we were just getting started,” Seokjin says smoothly, placing a bite of honeyed meat between his lips. “I was asking Jungkook-ssi about his impressions. He has quite the poetic soul, it seems.”
“Is that so?” Taehyung leans back, folding his hands together on the table. “Then I must have a word with your poets. They clearly haven’t influenced me enough.”
Jungkook chuckles under his breath. “Perhaps I could lend you one of mine, then.”
“Oh, careful,” Namjoon murmurs with amusement. “You’ll have the entire court in a frenzy if you start trading poets now.”
A wave of polite laughter rolls across the table.
But under it all— beneath the clinks of crystal and the rustle of silk, behind each carefully constructed smile— there’s tension. Not of hostility, or discomfort, but quite like... Anticipation.
And as the courses roll in, each more delicate and fragrant than the last, the conversation grows more fluid.
Namjoon and Seokjin do most of the talking, their dynamic warm and rhythmic. Seokjin, sharp and teasing; Namjoon, measured and wise. It’s a pairing that intrigues Jungkook more than he expected. They speak of art, of seasonal festivals, of mountain winds and the new trade routes in the southern provinces.
Jungkook answers politely, even engaging with flashes of wit that seem to surprise Taehyung once or twice. But mostly, he watches. His gaze drifts, often and unapologetically, toward the king seated across from him.
Taehyung doesn’t speak much; he listens. There’s an aura to him, a thoughtful gravity, that makes every glance feel heavier than it should. His fingers trace the rim of his goblet as he listens to Jungkook answer a question from Namjoon about his preferred art styles.
“I’ve always leaned toward ink and brush,” Jungkook says. “There’s something... sincere about the way a single stroke can define a whole scene.”
“And in that single stroke, there is no room for mistakes,” Taehyung murmurs suddenly, lifting his gaze to meet Jungkook’s.
Their eyes lock.
“No,” Jungkook replies, slower this time. “But sometimes... even a mistake can become part of the piece. If you know how to carry it.”
A pause stretches between them— soft and charged, almost indulgent— until Seokjin clears his throat rather pointedly.
“Well,” he hums, “that’s a charmingly diplomatic way of saying you don’t mind making bold choices, Your Grace.”
“I believe in seeing them through, at least,” Jungkook answers smoothly, not taking his eyes off Taehyung.
Taehyung’s lips quirk at the corners, then he sets down his goblet with a gentle clink. “Perhaps, once you’re rested, you’d be willing to show me some of those brushstrokes in person. We have a modest gallery in the eastern gardens. It’s quiet there, peaceful even.”
“I’d be honoured,” Jungkook says, voice even but steady.
Taehyung then adds, “Though I must admit, I, usually, get more intrigued by the artist than the canvas.”
Seokjin coughs again, louder this time. Namjoon nearly chokes on his wine.
Jungkook raises a brow, an amused smile now evident. “You flatter easily.”
“I observe well,” Taehyung counters, his tone still polite but undeniably firm.
Before the tension can thicken too much, Seokjin sets down his fork with a finality that earns everyone’s attention.
“Well!” he says brightly. “This has been utterly delightful. Namjoon, don’t you think it’s time we left these two to discuss their... brushstrokes?”
Namjoon exhales a low laugh, standing up with grace. “Yes. Quite.”
As the couple departs— Seokjin tossing Taehyung a not-so-subtle wink as they go— the room seems to shift. The air grows quieter, more still, and yet somehow fuller.
Only Taehyung and Jungkook remain.
Jungkook leans back in his chair slightly, the flickering candlelight casting soft gold across his cheekbones. “Your brother has a flair for theatrics.”
Taehyung exhales a small laugh, resting his chin on his knuckles. “You should see him during festival season. He once dressed as the Moon Goddess for a harvest ball and refused to come down from the rooftop unless we serenaded him.”
Jungkook chuckles, then grows quiet again. He glances out the tall window, then back at Taehyung.
“You didn’t intend to meet me first,” he says suddenly. Not a question, rather a statement.
Taehyung tilts his head, caught for a moment— but not off guard. “No. It was meant to be Seokjin. I made the change last minute.”
“Why?”
The king holds his gaze. The question lingers in the air between them, heavy in its honesty.
Finally, Taehyung replies, voice soft, but sure.
“Because I wanted to see you first. Before anything was said, before we played our parts. Just... you. As you are.”
Jungkook doesn’t smile, but his eyes soften.
“And?” he asks.
Taehyung considers him, really considers him.
“Still deciding,” he says, rising from his seat. “Walk with me?”
Jungkook stands too, quietly, following as Taehyung moves toward the grand doors that lead into the hall. The night beyond them hums with the hush of stars and lanterns and waiting things— like whispered promises, not yet made.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
It’s been four days.
Four whole days of Jungkook residing within the heart of Dalnara, and it’s nothing short of a dream. A dream stitched in gold, dew, and blooming promises.
The castle breathes. Not just stands, but lives. It hums softly with the passage of time, as if the very stones under his feet remember the warmth of those who tread before. From the meticulously kept gardens, where roses bloom in careful defiance of the mountain wind, to the quiet laughter echoing down sun-dappled halls, life in Dalnara feels organic; constantly flowing, constantly becoming. Like the place itself refuses to be anything but alive.
Jungkook breathes in the crisp morning air from the terrace, his eyes tracing the blur of noble banners flapping far across the courtyard. He tucks his hands behind his back, posture relaxed, but his thoughts… not quite.
He exhales slowly, letting the past few days resurface behind his eyes.
Just yesterday, the council chamber had been full— elders of Dalnara seated in their curved arc of high-backed chairs, sunlight slanting across ancient scrolls and modern minds. A heated discussion had sparked over expanding trade routes beyond the Eastern Isles— whether it risked too much exposure, or if they could afford to remain inward-facing while the rest of the continent turned outward.
Jungkook had been seated beside Taehyung. Not behind him, beside him.
That alone had made his heart stammer.
But more than that, it was when one of the advisors had paused, eyes settling on him, and said:
“And so,” Lord Namgil’s voice rings sharp, his pale hands spread across scattered parchments, “it begs the question, Your Majesty: how far do we trust the Wolguk if we go ahead with this alliance? Are we merely handing them the keys to our gates with this agreement?”
Not a polite nod, nor a deferential title, but a direct question.
The murmur of voices rises, half the nobles nodding in agreement, the other half glancing uneasily at Jungkook, who remains unbothered, his gaze trained calmly on the table.
Taehyung raises a hand, and silence falls like an axe.
“Trust is not given freely, Lord Namgil, it is earned. However, suspicion without reason is no better than cowardice cloaked in caution.”
There’s a faint sharpness to Taehyung’s tone, enough to make Namgil sit back down with a murmur of apology.
But Taehyung feels it, the unspoken fear that coils like smoke in the corners of the room. They do not fear Jungkook because he is powerful; they fear him because they cannot predict him.
“Prince Jungkook,” Taehyung says, turning slightly to meet the prince’s gaze. “You’ve remained quiet. Surely, you have thoughts on these concerns.”
Jungkook looks up slowly, his dark eyes meeting Taehyung’s with a stillness that feels like the surface of deep water.
“Your Majesty,” Jungkook begins, his voice holding a firmness that demands attention without raising in volume. “Trust, as you said, is earned. I do not expect to be handed it on a silver platter simply because a contract has been or will be signed.”
A murmur ripples across the table. Jungkook continues.
“But suspicion is a sharp edge, and if wielded carelessly, it cuts both ways. Dalnara’s walls are strong, your people proud, and your resources… enviable. Yet alliances are not forged from suspicion. They are forged from necessity and respect.”
His gaze, intense and unwavering, shifts briefly, locking with Taehyung’s.
“You have my respect, Your Majesty. I hope, in time, to earn yours as well.”
The chamber falls into silence.
Taehyung holds Jungkook’s gaze, his breath catching faintly in his chest. There’s no artifice in those words, no carefully hidden blade, only sincerity, raw and unadorned.
“Well spoken, Prince Jungkook,” Taehyung says softly, his voice breaking the silence. “Let us not build bridges only to set them aflame before we cross them.”
The council shifts, tension dissolving into a more contemplative hum as the meeting continues.
The discussions soon start spiralling into trade agreements, patrol routes along the borders, and whispers of unrest in the neighbouring kingdoms.
Jungkook remains still, his attention flickering between the nobles who speak and Taehyung, who listens with a sharp, unyielding focus.
But it’s the moments between that Jungkook notices most.
The way Taehyung’s slender fingers tap lightly against the carved armrest of his chair when a noble begins to drone on.
The faint crease of his brows when a suggestion strikes him as foolish.
The way his gaze flickers, brief, almost shy, toward Jungkook whenever their eyes meet across the table.
It’s a dance, Jungkook realises. A silent choreography of glances and words left unsaid.
“Your Majesty,” an older noble says, his beard streaked with grey. “The matter of the southern borders remains unresolved. If the Wolguk forces are to be stationed there, surely Prince Jungkook himself should oversee their command.”
Jungkook tilts his head slightly, observing Taehyung’s reaction.
The King is still for a moment, his expression unreadable.
“That is not necessary,” Taehyung says smoothly. “Prince Jungkook is a guest in Dalnara. We will not burden him with such tasks unless he himself volunteers.”
There’s a challenge in those words, a hidden invitation wrapped in courtly politeness. And, Jungkook catches it.
“If my presence is required at the borders, Your Majesty,” Jungkook says, a faint smirk ghosting across his lips, “I will gladly serve. After all, what is an alliance if not shared burdens?”
The faintest flicker of surprise dances across Taehyung’s face before he schools it back into composure.
“Your willingness is noted, Prince Jungkook. For now, let us trust our generals to handle the matter.”
The noble nods, appeased, and the conversation shifts once more.
But Jungkook doesn’t miss the faint curve at the corner of Taehyung’s lips. A smile hidden so carefully it might not have existed at all.
Jungkook sighs deeply now, back in the present.
This freedom, this chance to speak his mind and be heard without scrutiny weighing him down like iron chains, it’s intoxicating.
Something he hadn’t known he craved until he tasted it.
Yes, things were changing back home since Yoongi took on the title of Crown Prince. The kingdom of Wolguk was loosening its shackles, slowly but surely. Yoongi was sweeping through old doctrines with the efficiency of a seasoned strategist and the patience of a poet. But…
It wasn’t enough. Not fast enough. Not free enough. Not like this.
Jungkook lowers his gaze, thumbs brushing over the silver ring he wears. A simple heirloom. It grounds him, reminds him of his roots.
But then again, roots aren’t meant to be cages.
The thought that’s been blooming quietly over the past few days rears its head again. Would it be so bad if he… stayed? If he truly considered proposing something more? An official, long-term alliance? One that wasn’t just ink on parchment, but… something more? Perhaps something lived?
He bites his lip, indecision shadowing his features.
How would he propose such a thing? And more importantly… why?
What would he say to that question— “why”?
His thoughts stray, again, to the king.
King Taehyung. Crowned not just in gold but in quiet strength. The way he carries himself with a kind of fluid grace, every gesture controlled yet expressive. His voice— low, layered with authority and velvet. Those eyes, a rare shade of clouded grey, somehow hold both the weight of history and the innocence of wonder.
And when they meet his, really meet his, Jungkook feels like the world holds its breath.
It’s maddening, how the mere existence of this man seems to blur the lines between political and personal, reality and want.
Jungkook exhales, running a hand through his hair.
Focus. He needs to focus.
There’s a gathering today, a social affair. Semi-formal, filled with dignitaries and nobles from Dalnara’s various sectors. Representatives of merchant guilds, artisans’ clans, visiting lords, and military heads.
Taehyung had mentioned that it would be a good chance for Jungkook to “mingle”. A word that felt far too casual for the layers of strategy likely required.
Still, Jungkook is expected to charm, to be seen. He will. He always does. But his mind? It’s already at the ball that’s a few nights away.
The one in his honour, the one where decisions could shift. Where glances might linger too long. Where, maybe, a certain king might ask him to dance.
Jungkook closes his eyes for a moment longer.
Then turns from the terrace, his face a careful mask of poised diplomacy. But in his chest, where no one can see, his heart beats a rhythm no court has yet heard.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
The grand hall is bathed in golden light, warm and honeyed. The kind that melts over the high ceilings and pools gently against the polished marble floors. The chandeliers glitter above like suspended stars, catching and scattering fragments of the evening’s laughter, of whispers woven into the gilded air. It is a scene plucked straight from the stories Jungkook once read under moonlight, curled up in library corners back home.
Now, seated at a long table between Seokjin and Namjoon, he feels the soft buzz of nobility talk circling around him. Polite discussions, territorial updates, delicate trades, marriages made of paper and politics. Yet none of it quite reaches him. His thoughts are elsewhere, still tangled in the memory of a smile. His smile.
Taehyung’s.
Jungkook’s gaze flickers across the room again, almost as if drawn by a thread, and there he is.
The king stands amongst a small crowd of Dalnaran dignitaries. His voice is a gentle murmur over clinking glasses, and his gestures are fluid, fingers dancing mid-air as he explains something. And although Jungkook can’t hear a word of it, he’s entirely captivated by the picture.
The subtle tilt of Taehyung’s head, the soft gleam in his eyes, the quiet confidence that seems to rest on his shoulders like a second crown.
“So,” Namjoon’s voice pulls him gently back to the present, “how are you finding Dalnara? Anything striking your fancy?”
Jungkook startles slightly, blinking as he tries to recall the question.
“I— yeah, it’s… nice,” he says, though the words feel a touch too small, too unsure, almost out of place in his mouth.
Namjoon glances at him with raised brows but says nothing. The look is knowing, fond, and entirely amused.
Seokjin, however, leans in, resting his chin lightly on his hand, voice dropping low enough to hush the world outside their circle.
“You know, I overheard something rather interesting last night,” he begins, tone bordering on sing-song, like he’s about to share a secret too delicious not to.
Jungkook turns to him, brows knitting. “What do you mean?”
“Well,” Seokjin says, drawing the word out with a flourish of his fingers, “word has it your family is whispering about a union.”
“A union?” Jungkook echoes, though the word rings oddly in his ears.
Seokjin smiles slyly. “A marriage, actually.”
The sentence lands like a stone dropped into still water. Silent, but far-reaching.
Jungkook goes still. His heart, just a moment ago, fluttering with a quiet hum, seems to freeze in place.
“Marriage?” he breathes, eyes widening as he darts a glance towards Taehyung again, barely catching the edge of his profile.
He swallows. “But hyung hasn’t said anything about—”
“It’s new,” Namjoon interjects gently, his expression far softer than his husband’s teasing. “I only caught a whisper myself. It hasn’t been made official. Yet.”
“Yet?” Jungkook repeats numbly, the word falling from his lips like mist.
“Oh, don’t look so surprised,” Seokjin chimes, still grinning like a cat who’s found cream.
“You know how these things work. Temporary alliances are nice enough, but a marriage,” he lifts his eyebrows, “a marriage is something permanent. Something… binding.”
Jungkook’s stomach twists. His fingers tighten slightly in his lap, gripping the silken folds of his tunic. He tries to make sense of the whirlwind in his chest — the racing pulse, the way his cheeks feel inexplicably warm, the thought spinning in his head like a refrain he can’t shake.
An arranged marriage. A marriage to Taehyung.
He presses his lips together, blinking down at the table as if the answers might be hiding in the glint of a spoon, in the soft hush of silver against porcelain. Could something like this really happen?
Could an alliance turn to a union born of duty and diplomacy? Could that… become something more?
Something gentler?
He’d known of Taehyung, of course. Long before this. His name had slipped through quiet channels, carried by people Jungkook trusted more than blood. A king with sharp eyes and softer hands, who laughed in the middle of war councils and danced barefoot during festivals. He’d read every report, heard every whispered story. And still, nothing had prepared him for this visit. For the way Taehyung looked at him like he wasn’t extra. Like he wasn’t a leftover.
Because that’s what he’d always been back home. Not unloved. Just… unnecessary. Treated with kindness, yes. But also with the gentle distance you keep for someone who won’t ever really be needed. And when the political tides shifted, and he heard Dalnara might be looking at an open southern flank, he moved fast. Desperate, maybe. But not dishonest.
Because what else was left for him there? Another year spent standing at the edge of things?
This, this chance, it had felt like something meant to be.
Like a door left ajar in a place that had always been locked to him.
He hadn’t done anything because of a political strategy. He had, because, for once, he could. And now, sitting here, under soft golden light, with laughter still echoing faintly in his chest, he wonders if maybe… maybe there’s more waiting on the other side than he dared hope for.
His gaze lifts once more, searching, and there he is.
Taehyung is walking towards them now, a glass of something amber-hued in one hand, his other resting casually at his side. His long coat flows slightly behind him with each step, embroidered in threads of gold and crimson. Conversations falter as he passes, not entirely silenced but hushed, reverent; a ripple of awareness following in his wake.
Jungkook swears the air shifts with him.
His breath catches, just for a moment.
And then Taehyung is standing at their table, his eyes gleaming as they meet Jungkook’s.
“Good evening, Prince Jungkook,” he says smoothly. His voice is as warm as mulled wine in winter. Rich, inviting, with an edge of something deeper that curls softly around Jungkook’s name.
Jungkook stands quickly, too quickly perhaps, his hands twitching slightly at his sides.
The air between them thrums gently with the quiet gravity that has grown over these past few days. A familiarity that feels too fragile to name and too potent to ignore.
“Good evening, Your Majesty,” Jungkook murmurs, his words soft, almost shy, and he internally winces at how uncertain they sound.
Taehyung’s smile widens, just slightly, eyes glinting with a knowing that sends Jungkook’s thoughts spiralling. He noticed.
“Am I interrupting something?” he asks, voice soft, but coloured with a playful curiosity.
Jungkook’s heart stutters. Seokjin smiles like he knows exactly what.
“Not at all,” Namjoon replies smoothly, glancing sideways at Jungkook with an amused sort of fondness. “In fact, we were just talking about you.”
Taehyung raises a brow, his gaze flitting to Jungkook. “Oh? Should I be flattered or concerned?”
Jungkook opens his mouth, but nothing quite makes it past the flutter in his chest.
“Definitely flattered,” Seokjin quips. “But if you’d like to know more, perhaps you’ll have to ask Prince Jungkook here.”
Jungkook shoots his brother a mortified look, which Seokjin returns with a wink.
Taehyung, bless him, only smiles. Soft, slow, and a little too knowing.
“Why are you bullying our guest, hyung,” he says.
“I’m not bullying, Taehyungie,” he begins innocently, though his grin suggests anything but, “however, if you insist on knowing… we were just discussing the possibility of our two kingdoms joining forces through a more... personal union.”
Taehyung’s expression remains composed, his smile perfectly polite, but Jungkook catches the flicker. A small shift in his posture. The tiniest narrowing of his eyes.
“Personal union?” Taehyung echoes, arching a brow as he turns to Jungkook, voice smooth, yet laced with something curious. Something deliberate.
Jungkook feels his pulse stutter.
“Yes, of course,” Seokjin says, utterly unfazed by the weight his words have thrown into the air. “A marriage between you and Jungkook could prove far more fruitful than mere diplomacy. You know how these temporary alliances tend to fizzle.”
The hall seems quieter now, the music and conversation fading into the background hum. Jungkook can barely breathe, his heart thudding so loudly he’s certain Seokjin must hear it.
Taehyung looks at him then. Really looks at him. As though seeing through every inch of princely composure, Jungkook has managed to maintain.
“I see,” Taehyung says softly, his tone unreadable, but not cold. Never cold. If anything, it's laced with careful consideration, like he’s tasting the idea on his tongue.
Jungkook holds his breath.
And then—
“It would be an honour,” Taehyung continues, his voice steady and poised, “if the union is truly what’s best for both our kingdoms, I am certain we can make it work.”
Jungkook’s lungs catch. An honour. Not an obligation, not a burden.
The phrasing makes his heart ache with hope. Foolish, fluttering hope.
He nods slowly, fingers curling slightly where they rest at his sides.
“Of course,” he whispers, barely trusting himself to speak. “If… it’s what’s needed.”
Seokjin, ever the delighted puppetmaster, claps him on the back with a grin. “Well, that’s settled then.”
Settled. The word feels strange. Heavy. Jungkook isn’t quite sure what has been settled, only that the air between him and Taehyung feels irrevocably altered.
Taehyung’s gaze hasn’t wavered. There’s something in his eyes. Not unreadable now, but layered. Perhaps a quiet understanding, possibly a flicker of wonder. And beneath it all, a question that hasn’t yet been asked aloud.
“I suppose,” he says softly, tilting his head in that thoughtful way of his, “we should have a proper conversation soon.”
His voice drops, just a little, becoming more intimate. More them.
“To discuss… what the future could look like.”
The moment hangs like a lantern between them, casting long shadows of what could be.
Jungkook nods again, slow and careful, afraid that if he speaks, he might say something foolish. Like, yes, I’ve thought of nothing else. Like, please let it be you.
And then Taehyung steps away, folding himself back into the crowd with a grace that leaves Jungkook oddly breathless. He watches him go, unable to help the way his eyes follow the gentle sway of his cloak, the soft golden halo of candlelight playing against his profile.
There’s something electric in the air, like the pause before a summer storm. And though Jungkook knows everything is still uncertain, still held in the delicate balance between politics and possibility, something in him shifts.
The idea of an arranged marriage had always seemed so distant, so impersonal, akin to a contract, a duty.
But now, as he stands still amidst the swell of music and laughter, his heart quiet but beating fiercely, he wonders—
If the moon had been listening to him these past few nights,
If it had heard the wishes he hadn’t dared speak aloud,
Would this be its reply?
He watches Taehyung one last time, just as the king glances back over his shoulder. Their eyes meet in that split moment, like a thread drawn tight across the distance.
And Jungkook dares to hope.

“So... marriage, huh?” Hoseok says with a knowing glint, waggling his brows like a court jester freshly armed with gossip. “Are you sure you didn’t whisper a word to Yoongi hyung?”
Jungkook groans, exasperated. “You were right there when I spoke to hyung before coming here. Do you honestly think I suggested anything remotely like that?!”
Hoseok shrugs, far too pleased with himself. “No, but you thought it loudly.”
Jungkook shoots him a flat glare before collapsing face-first onto the bed, muffling a half-dramatic groan into the plush covers.
“That’s not very becoming of you, Your Grace,” Hoseok quips, mimicking a deep, posh voice and wagging his brows as if it’s the cleverest thing he’s said all day.
Jungkook lets out another muffled sound of despair before sitting up, his hair tousled and his cheeks pink from both the pressure of the bed and the conversation itself.
“How will I ever look His Majesty in the face again?” he mutters, rubbing his hands over his face. “He probably thinks I was in on it. That I just… just came waltzing in here with wedding bells ringing behind me.”
“He didn’t look annoyed,” Hoseok points out casually, inspecting his nails like he’s commenting on the weather. “If anything, he looked more surprised than anything else. Maybe a bit... intrigued?”
Jungkook’s head snaps up. “But what if he’s just… just being polite? What if he’s agreeing because it’s the diplomatic thing to do? What if—”
“None of that,” Hoseok cuts in smoothly, walking over and flicking Jungkook’s forehead with a single finger. “Don’t go spiralling, Your Grace. If you’re so desperate to know, you can just ask him, you know. Like a normal prince.”
Jungkook pouts, his eyes wide with a blend of helplessness and exasperation. “Easier said than done. You saw him. He speaks like poetry and walks like moonlight and I can’t even form a coherent sentence around him—”
“—You are down bad, my friend.” Hoseok grins, wholly unsympathetic. “It’s adorable.”
Jungkook groans and flops back again, dramatically flinging an arm over his eyes.
“Anyway,” Hoseok adds, plopping down beside him, “you should write to Yoongi hyung, just in case. Clear the air. Ask if this was actually his idea, or whether someone else got a little matchmaking-happy.”
“Mhm. I’ll send him a letter tonight.” Jungkook sighs, quieter this time, his fingers absently toying with the hem of his sleeve. “Even the king seemed a bit… thrown. He played it well, but I could tell.”
“Well, Seokjin-ssi does handle almost all of the royal correspondences,” Hoseok says with a meaningful glance. “Wouldn’t be the first time he made a chess move and let everyone else catch up later.”
Jungkook hums noncommittally, though the thought lingers. His mind drifts, unbidden, to their last meeting — the two of them in the garden party, soft afternoon light painting golden lines over polished stone, over Taehyung’s cheekbones. The way his laugh had curled into the space between them like a secret.
A blush blooms, slow and steady, across Jungkook’s face.
“Ah,” Hoseok says, grinning like a cat who’s found cream. “There it is. The blush of doom.”
“Shut up,” Jungkook mutters, tugging a cushion over his face. “It’s warm in here.”
“Mm-hmm. Warm,” Hoseok teases, nudging him with his knee. “You, my dear prince, are very much in trouble.”
“Get out,” Jungkook huffs as he hides his face, his mind drifting to weeks before.
The door creaks open slowly, and Jungkook steps into the study, his hands behind his back and his jaw set in what he hopes is confidence.
Yoongi doesn’t look up immediately. He’s hunched over a half-filled scroll, scribbling annotations with a precise hand. The lamplight dances over his face, casting sharp shadows beneath his eyes.
“You’ve been pacing outside for ten minutes,” Yoongi says, voice even. “Whatever it is, just spit it out.”
Jungkook blinks. “Was I that obvious?”
Yoongi sets his quill down and finally lifts his eyes. “You breathe louder when you’re plotting something.”
“I’m not plotting,” Jungkook says, too quickly. He clears his throat. “I just… wanted to discuss a possible trip. A diplomatic one.”
Yoongi raises an eyebrow, gaze taking him in. “To where?”
“Dalnara.”
The name hangs in the air, thick and expectant. Yoongi leans back slowly in his chair, fingers steepling beneath his chin.
Jungkook continues, tone carefully composed. “I’ve been…researching. We can have a formal discussion about expanding trade routes. There’s... tension to their western borders. Hidden still, but there. And with the newly formed alliance between Nagaura and Baoyang... they'll be worried about this front. Dalnara’s resources could help stabilise things if we play this right. This way, they can help with our... situation.”
Yoongi tilts his head. “That came out of nowhere?”
Jungkook doesn’t flinch, but his fingers twitch. “I’ve been studying their systems for a while. Their diplomatic approach is unconventional. I want to observe it firsthand... Build something.”
“Hm.” Yoongi’s expression is unreadable. “That sounds rehearsed.”
“Maybe because I rehearsed it,” Jungkook says with a weak laugh. “You always tell me to come prepared.”
“True.” Yoongi taps a finger on the desk once, twice. “Whom have you talked with?”
There’s a pause before Jungkook shrugs noncommittally. “I believe it’s Kim Seokjin. He’s overseeing their foreign correspondences. He mentioned potential openings for deeper collaboration. Said they’d be willing to receive someone from our court.”
Yoongi watches him carefully. “Did you receive a response? A letter?”
“Sort of,” Jungkook mutters, not quite meeting his brother’s eyes.
“Sort of?”
“It wasn’t formal... Just a note.” He waves a hand vaguely, then immediately fills the silence. “But I thought it’d be a good opportunity. Especially with how things are shifting here. You’re already making changes—”
Yoongi cuts him off, gaze sharp now. “And you’re feeling stifled.”
Jungkook stills.
“You’re not the only one who notices the old guards clinging to their power,” Yoongi says. “Even I can’t uproot everything overnight. But you—” he pauses, voice softening, “You want to see something different.”
Jungkook nods, slow and honest. “I do.”
There’s a long silence between them. Yoongi’s eyes drift away from him, gaze fixed on something distant. And then—
“You think the King… Taehyung’s different?”
Jungkook’s heart skips a beat. “I never said—”
“You didn’t have to.” Yoongi exhales, a ghost of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “I know you. I know how you think. You’ve kept an eye on that kingdom longer than you’ll admit... And he’s kept an eye back.”
Jungkook looks away, throat dry.
Yoongi rises, crossing to the small cabinet near the hearth and pouring two glasses of wine.
Jungkook takes the glass but doesn't drink. “So I can go?”
“You can go,” Yoongi nods. “But keep your eyes open. Not everything in Dalnara glitters for us.”
Jungkook nods once, quietly. “Thank you, hyung.”
As he steps out of the study a little later, the scroll with Taehyung’s handwriting remains tightly folded inside his sleeve, untouched and unseen. Yoongi might suspect something, but Jungkook isn’t ready to speak it aloud.
Not yet.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
Taehyung exhales softly as he settles on the edge of the stone slab, his fingers brushing over the warm surface, worn smooth by time and sun. Around him, the garden hums in its late evening rhythm. A cold breeze slips through tall grasses, the scent of jasmine curling around him like an old memory. Somewhere nearby, water gurgles over stone, not in a rush, just meandering along as if it, too, has nowhere to be.
Everything feels touched by a gentle kind of magic. One that doesn’t try too hard to be noticed.
“You seem far away, Your Majesty,” comes a voice behind him, quiet enough to be part of the breeze.
Taehyung turns, only slightly, and finds Jungkook standing a few paces away, bathed in dappled light. His robes catch the wind just enough to flutter softly at the edges, and the fading light kisses the curve of his cheek like it knows something no one else does.
“Prince Jungkook,” Taehyung says, offering a nod that’s more fond than formal.
“Your Majesty,” Jungkook returns, dipping into a small bow. But it’s his eyes that linger. They follow the way the breeze ruffles through the King’s hair, the way the light softens the sharpness of his features.
There’s a stillness to Taehyung today, he notices. Not frozen, but suspended, like something waiting to be exhaled.
“Perhaps I am,” Taehyung murmurs eventually, half to himself.
Jungkook’s brow furrows with the slightest concern. “I’m sorry?”
Taehyung turns to face him properly now, a wry little smile playing at his lips. He doesn’t answer immediately. Just takes a moment to watch Jungkook watching him.
“It’s easy to drift,” he says, finally. “When one feels... watched.”
Jungkook blinks, just once. Not startled, but thoughtful. Then, his voice drops, soft as the shadows beneath the garden trees. “Watched, Your Majesty? By the flowers… or by me?”
The question hangs there, light but unmistakably real, like a dandelion caught mid-air.
Taehyung tilts his head, the motion graceful, curious. “You play with words as though they’re made of glass, Prince Jungkook. Delicate, but capable of cutting.”
“And you wield yours like silk,” Jungkook replies, his smile slow, boyish. “Soft to the touch, but before you know it, you’re tangled in them.”
Taehyung chuckles, a quiet sound, golden and brief. And just like that their gazes catch, holding merely a second longer than they should.
The air between them hums with something too gentle to be tension, too alive to be nothing. Not quite touch, nor a promise. Just presence.
Unthinking, Taehyung shifts a little closer. Simply enough that the distance feels... less like an obstacle.
“Do you often walk the gardens alone, Your Majesty?” Jungkook finally asks, his tone coloured with genuine curiosity.
“Not often enough,” Taehyung admits. “But they remind me that time can pass softly. Not every hour must be loud.”
Jungkook smiles at that, a dimple peeking through. “Then I’m glad I found you during a quiet one.”
A beat passes, filled with nothing but the brush of wind and the rustle of petals.
“Perhaps,” Taehyung says, voice barely above a murmur, “you didn’t find me. Perhaps I was waiting.”
Jungkook’s breath catches, just for a second. Not dramatically, not obviously. But Taehyung notices.
Of course he does.
“You had spies,” he finally whispers, the words light on his tongue but heavy in the air between them.
Jungkook stiffens.
Though the truth had lingered unspoken between them for days now, to hear it said aloud still feels like a blade drawn gently across skin. No blood, not yet, but it burns all the same.
“I did,” he murmurs, voice barely a breath.
Taehyung doesn’t flinch. He only inclines his head slightly, his gaze sharp as flint, trained on Jungkook with a quiet, startling clarity.
Jungkook swallows, dryly. The admission curls cold in his chest. He knows the weight of it. The implications. The insult it might carry.
“I won’t excuse it,” he says after a moment. “But—” He hesitates, then presses on, softer. “Would you believe me if I said it was only to understand what we could offer you? Not to harm, or manipulate. Just… to know where we stood.”
Taehyung says nothing.
The silence is neither cruel nor kind. It’s considering. Searching. Like he’s listening not just to the words, but to everything Jungkook doesn’t say.
“You tell me,” Taehyung replies at last, quiet and steady. “Should I? Excuse it?”
Jungkook’s jaw tightens, then loosens. He looks away, out toward the garden where the flowers dance in the soft breeze; jasmine and violet, impossibly delicate, impossibly bold.
And then, with a sardonic smile curling faintly at the corner of his lips, he asks:
“Why would you even agree to this alliance?”
Taehyung blinks, just once. But he doesn’t interrupt.
“Your empire… Dalnara,” Jungkook continues, his tone turning almost wistful, “has everything. Wealth. Power. Influence that touches half the continent. What could Wolguk possibly offer that you don’t already possess?”
The question isn’t bitter. It’s not even accusatory.
It’s honest.
Taehyung watches him, expression unreadable, and Jungkook lets the silence stretch just long enough to fill the space between them with something fragile.
“Everything fades without purpose, Your Majesty,” Jungkook says softly.
“And Wolguk…” Jungkook shakes his head, “I needed to have one.”
Taehyung’s breath stills, caught between ribs that feel suddenly too tight. His brows knit faintly, like something has lodged there. Unexpected and far too close.
“And what purpose,” he asks quietly, “do you seek here, Prince Jungkook?”
Jungkook doesn’t speak at once.
His eyes remain on the garden, on the gentle curve of vines climbing the trellis, on the way the light turns everything gold for a moment too long.
Then, with a voice gentled by something deeper, he murmurs, “Perhaps…I’m still searching for it. Maybe it’s not entirely political.”
The words settle between them like petals on still water. Oh, so delicate and fleeting, but real.
Taehyung doesn’t move.
He only watches him. And in that moment, something inside him wavers, just a little; not doubt, but understanding.
And it disarms him more than anger ever could.
From somewhere deeper within the garden, the stillness is broken by the sound of Wooshik’s voice, carried gently by the breeze.
“Your Majesty? The ambassadors are asking after you.”
The moment shatters, like glass slipping from trembling fingers.
Taehyung draws back. His spine straightens, shoulders realigning with the weight of the crown. Fingers smooth the delicate folds of his robes with practised elegance.
The King returns, and the man, just Taehyung, retreats behind gilded armour and unspoken rules.
Jungkook steps away, too, a breath of space stretching between them once more. The light in his eyes dims just slightly, shadowed by something unreadable.
“Duty calls,” Taehyung says softly, voice a smooth, practised balm.
“It always does,” Jungkook replies, dipping into a slight bow. Then, gentler, like an offering: “But maybe… it can wait. Just once.”
Taehyung pauses.
His hands twitch faintly at his sides, fingers curling as though reaching for something he knows he cannot hold.
But then he exhales and shakes his head with quiet finality.
“Some burdens cannot wait, Prince Jungkook. You’ll learn that, in time.”
There’s no cruelty in his voice, only the soft gravity of someone who has long accepted what he must carry.
With one last glance, fleeting but lingering, Taehyung turns and walks toward the castle.
And just like that, his absence carves through the air.
The space he leaves behind feels colder, dimmer. Like a light snuffed out in a room where silence now reigns.
Jungkook watches him go, his breath shallow as he straightens, reassembling his own mask with practised ease.
He understands, perhaps too well, the burden of leadership, of decisions not made by desire but by necessity.
He’s seen it in Taehyung’s every movement, etched into the deliberate stillness of his hands, the careful lilt of his voice, as though one wrong note might crack everything.
But beneath that… Jungkook had glimpsed something else.
Something rare and unguarded.
A flicker of longing. A spark of something more.
And he wants to touch it. Wants to hold it. To be let into it.
“Your Grace?” one of Jungkook’s attendants appears at the archway, bowing low. “The food is ready, if you wish to dine now.”
Jungkook shakes his head, slow and distant.
“No. I’ll remain here a little longer.”
The attendant nods and disappears silently, leaving Jungkook alone with the hush of wind and jasmine once again.
His eyes drift back toward the castle, where Taehyung’s silhouette weaves through nobility gracefully.
“Perhaps this is what I’m searching for,” Jungkook whispers into the evening.
And the confession drifts quietly into the air, caught between stars and fading sun, where only the wind dares carry it.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
The corridor hushes behind him with the soft click of a door.
Taehyung remains still for a beat, his shoulders heavy with the weight of crowns and expectations. The echo of courtly laughter and the rustle of ceremonial silk fade into the distance, like waves pulling back into the sea.
He draws in a breath.
Lavender drifts in on the night breeze, mingling with the faint scent of parchment and wax. The chamber is lit only by flickering candlelight and the cool spill of moonlight across stone.
He walks slowly to the tall windows. Outside, the kingdom glimmers under a velvet sky. Lanterns burn low in the city below. But Taehyung doesn’t see rooftops, or streets or towers.
He sees eyes. Honest and waiting.
He sees Jungkook. Not as a prince, not as a puzzle to decipher. But as something steady and real.
A voice that had said, “Perhaps it can wait, just once,” like it meant more than it should’ve been allowed to.
Taehyung smiles softly.
For so long, the crown has asked him to wait, to withhold; every affection measured, every decision filtered through consequence. But there had been something different in Jungkook’s voice; a willingness, a patience.
There had been no fear in his eyes, only understanding of a shared weight.
And for the first time in a long while, Taehyung wonders if maybe his life isn’t only his own to carry. Maybe someone is willing to walk beside him, to understand the burden rather than just admire the glitter of it from afar.
He closes his eyes and lets the breeze play across his features.
The silence isn’t empty. It’s full of things still unsaid, of promises not yet formed but quietly building. A soft beginning. The kind that doesn’t rush, but blooms slowly, like jasmine at dusk.
He lets out a small breath, nearly a laugh.
Maybe it won’t be tonight, maybe the world won’t shift all at once. But something has already begun. He can feel it, subtle and sure as the moonrise.
A thread of something golden and warm, weaving itself quietly between one heartbeat and the next.
He opens his eyes again and gazes at the stars, not for answers, but in thanks.
For the first time in a long time, he doesn’t feel alone in the silence.
He turns from the window, not to retreat into duty, but to move forward.
Tomorrow will come with its scrolls and speeches, its gilded expectation. But tonight, beneath soft candlelight and a sky full of quiet stars, something real has taken root. Something that feels like the start of a story not yet written.
And Taehyung, just Taehyung, is ready to meet it.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
The evening of the royal ball arrives, and the grand hall is alive with a sparkling energy, the air thick with anticipation.
The chandeliers glitter like distant stars, casting warm, golden light over the guests, their elegant gowns and finely tailored suits swirling in a sea of movement. The music— soft, lilting waltzes— drifts over the crowd, pulling everyone into its rhythm.
But Jungkook?
He stands a little apart from it all, glass of champagne in hand, untouched and forgotten. His eyes are drawn to the dance floor, to the couples moving with ease, but his focus keeps wandering back to one person: Taehyung.
Taehyung stands near the Wolguk’s Crown Prince Min Yoongi and his betrothed Park Jimin. The three of them are engaged in a lively conversation, but Taehyung’s gaze keeps flicking over to Jungkook.
There’s a softness in his eyes, an almost imperceptible pull, as though he, too, can feel something shifting in the air tonight.
Seokjin appears at his side, as if summoned by the very energy between them. He offers Jungkook a teasing smile and claps him on the shoulder. “You know, you’re going to have to dance sooner or later, right?”
Jungkook blinks, caught off guard.
“What?” he murmurs, not quite sure what Seokjin means.
“A dance, Jungkook-ssi,” Seokjin teases with a playful arch of his brow. “Or are you going to stand here all night looking like you’re waiting for something more?”
Jungkook fidgets with his glass, the words pulling him out of his reverie. What is he waiting for, exactly? He isn’t sure, but something in the air tonight feels... different. A little lighter, perhaps. A little more full of possibilities.
“Maybe,” he answers, his voice barely above a whisper, as if even he isn’t sure of what he’s saying.
Seokjin chuckles, but before he can say more, Yoongi steps up to join them, his sharp gaze darting between them. “What is this? Entrapping my brother into something, are we?”
Seokjin grins, his playful energy never waning. “Me? Entrapping the Prince? You’ve quite the sense of humour, Your Highness.”
Yoongi’s lips twitch, amused, as Seokjin excuses himself.
Jimin, always with that mischievous spark, leans in with a teasing smile. “Now, now, what is this something more that our Jungkookie is waiting for?”
Jungkook groans, a flush creeping up his neck.
“Leave me alone,” he mutters, though the soft curve of his lips betrays his embarrassment.
Jimin raises his eyebrows dramatically. “Why would I ever leave you alone, when this is the most fun I’ve had in years?”
“Hyung,” Jungkook whines, barely holding back a laugh. “Why did you have to choose him of all people?”
Yoongi chuckles low in his throat, a knowing smirk crossing his face. “Don’t just stand there, Jungkook-ah. Take a chance.”
The words linger in the air, and for a moment, everything seems to quiet around him.
Jungkook sneaks another glance at Taehyung, who is still standing with the others. His heart does a strange little flutter, a gentle pull, like a soft tug on the very fibres of his being.
He wants to approach. He wants to step forward and close the distance, but there’s something in the space between them, something unspoken, that feels too fragile to touch just yet.
The weight of the moment, the sense that tonight— tonight something could change— sends a quiet shiver down his spine.
Jimin, sensing the hesitation, gives him a playful nudge, his eyes gleaming with mischief. “Go on, Jungkookie. You’ll never know unless you try.”
Jungkook swallows hard, the air suddenly feeling thick around him. The room is full of movement, but everything seems to slow.
His gaze flickers between Taehyung and the open space on the dance floor, where couples glide effortlessly, as if the world around them is a little less real, a little softer.
He can feel his pulse quicken, the uncertainty giving way to something else. Something softer. Something that feels more like the quiet promise of the stars overhead.
Maybe this is it. Maybe this is the moment he’s been waiting for, not with any grand idea of what might happen, but with the simple hope that something might begin here. Now.
With a deep breath, he steps forward, his heart steadying as the music swells around him. He’s not sure what will happen, but for the first time tonight, he’s no longer afraid to find out.
Licking his lips, Jungkook shuffles before he can change his mind.
Though his heart races faster than his feet can carry him, he moves toward the dance floor with a purposeful stride.
When he finally, finally, reaches Taehyung, the world seems to fade. The music muffles beneath the rush of his pulse.
Taehyung notices him almost immediately. His lips curve into a small, welcoming smile that makes Jungkook’s heart skip a beat.
There’s something effortless about the way Taehyung holds himself.
“Good evening, Prince Jungkook,” Taehyung greets, his voice low and inviting, though his eyes hold something deeper.
“Good evening, Your Majesty,” Jungkook replies, trying to keep his voice steady.
He takes a deep breath before adding, “Would you… care to dance?”
The question hangs in the air for a moment, an offering that feels both delicate and charged with something unspoken.
Taehyung doesn’t immediately answer but steps closer.
His eyes narrow slightly in that way Jungkook has come to associate with something deeper, something neither of them says aloud.
“I’d be honoured.” The words come easily to Taehyung, and without another word, he places a hand on Jungkook’s arm, guiding him to the centre of the dance floor.
The soft strains of the orchestra swirl around them, and as the music begins, Jungkook is suddenly acutely aware of every small detail.
The way their hands barely brush as they take their positions, the slight tension in the air between them, the soft heat of Taehyung’s breath as he leads them with smooth, fluid movements.
Their steps are in sync, the rhythm of the waltz guiding them, but Jungkook’s mind is elsewhere.
His hand rests lightly on Taehyung’s shoulder, and as they turn, their eyes meet.
The connection is electric.
Neither of them looks away, and for a long moment, the rest of the world seems to blur.
Taehyung’s gaze softens, and Jungkook feels his heart give a quiet thrum.
“You dance well,” Taehyung murmurs, his voice warm and low, just for Jungkook to hear.
“I’m surprised you’d say that,” Jungkook replies, his voice teasing but edged with a softness he didn’t expect. “I’ve never danced before.”
Taehyung lets out a small laugh, a sound that vibrates through Jungkook like a melody of its own. “Then I must be a terrible teacher.”
Jungkook’s lips curve into a smile, and his heart stirs. “No, you’re perfect.”
Taehyung stills for a moment, his eyes widening fractionally.
Jungkook ducks his head, feeling the rush of heat to his cheeks.
“Coming from you, it’s the highest praise, My Prince.” Taehyung whispers, his voice laced with a warmth that wraps around Jungkook’s heart.
Jungkook feels his heart skip a beat as the words register, a shiver spreading across his spine at the title Taehyung uses.
He peeks up to look at the King, only for their eyes to lock once more, and as they continue to move in fluid steps, they lose themselves to the rhythm, to the moment.
Their hands merely brush, but the space between them feels charged.
Jungkook feels the warmth of Taehyung’s presence, the heat of his gaze.
And with that warmth, the dance progresses.
At some point, when the music swells, Taehyung leans in just slightly, making their bodies brush ever so gently.
And Jungkook? He feels a strange pull in his chest.
The brush of fabric, the soft pressure of their hands, the shared glances... It’s all so subtle, yet impossible to ignore.
The dance seems to stretch on forever, a slow, swirling waltz that leaves them both breathless by the end.
As the final notes of the song play, they come to a stop, standing so close that Jungkook can feel the heat radiating from Taehyung’s body.
Neither of them moves away, and for a long moment, they just stand there, eyes locked.
“You’re... you’re not a bad dancer at all,” Taehyung whispers, his voice soft but rich with something deeper, something Jungkook can’t quite name.
Jungkook chuckles softly, his face flushing a little at the compliment. But it feels like more than just a dance now.
“Neither are you,” he replies quietly, the words holding a meaning that transcends the moment.
The moment stretches, and Jungkook feels like he could stand there forever, like the world has narrowed to just the two of them, locked in a delicate dance of their own.
“Shall we take a walk?” Taehyung suggests, breaking the spell, but not enough to erase the intimacy that lingers in the air between them.
Jungkook nods, his heart fluttering lightly in his chest. There’s something different now, something beyond the formalities, beyond the arranged marriage, beyond the alliance.
It feels like the beginning of something new.
Taehyung smiles, his gaze steady, despite the weight of all the eyes upon them.
When they face each other, Taehyung raises his hand, palm up. Jungkook takes it carefully, his gloved fingers curling around Taehyung’s with the gentleness of something precious and fragile.
The music continues to hum through the hall, but to Jungkook, nothing else matters anymore except the soft pressure of Taehyung’s hand, the warmth that grows between them.
As they move farther away from the dance floor, the world feels smaller… more intimate.
The heavy velvet curtains, once shimmering with the glow of the ballroom, now seem to absorb the chatter and laughter of the guests, leaving them in a world of their own.
“You look as though you’re carrying the world on your shoulders, Your Majesty,” Jungkook murmurs, his voice soft, as they take slow, deliberate steps.
Taehyung’s lips twitch into a faint smile, but his gaze doesn’t leave Jungkook. “Perhaps I am, Prince Jungkook. And what of you? Do you not carry a world of your own?”
Jungkook tilts his head slightly, his dark eyes catching the glimmer of chandelier light. “Perhaps. But tonight, my world feels… lighter.”
Taehyung feels a smile tug at the corner of his lips as he leads Jungkook toward the balcony— a wide, open space that overlooks the moonlit garden. The cool night air feels like a welcome shift after the warmth of the dance.
They step outside, and Jungkook inhales deeply, trying to steady his heart that’s still racing. He can feel the quiet of the night seeping into him, calming the chaos inside.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Taehyung’s voice is quiet but warm, and Jungkook looks up at him, seeing the way the soft glow of the moonlight plays across his features, softening everything around them.
“Yeah,” Jungkook agrees, though he’s not sure whether he means the view or something else entirely. “I never noticed how peaceful it could be up here.”
Taehyung stands close, a little too close for a casual stroll, yet there’s no tension in the space between them. It feels... natural, as though they’ve walked like this before, shared these quiet moments even though they haven’t.
Taehyung glances sideways at him, a small smile curling at the corners of his lips. “I’ve always liked it here. It feels like the world can wait for just a little while.”
Jungkook smiles, the words grounding him. It makes the air between them feel a little warmer.
He’s not used to this kind of quiet. There’s always noise, always movement around him. And yet, here with Taehyung, it feels effortless, like they don’t need to say anything at all.
They move further into the garden, their steps soundless against the cobblestone path.
Jungkook looks at the flowers blooming in the dark, their petals almost glowing under the moonlight, shifting between silver and violet.
“Is it always like this for you?” Jungkook asks softly, his voice barely more than a whisper. “This... calm?”
Taehyung stops walking, turning to face him, his eyes holding something distant for a moment.
“Not always,” he says gently, stepping closer, until they stand just a hair’s breadth apart. “But tonight, it feels different.”
Jungkook’s heart skips a beat at the implied meaning, and he finds himself unsure how to respond.
The air between them feels thick with something unspoken, and he suddenly feels acutely aware of how close they are, of how their breaths mingle in the stillness.
Taehyung lifts his hand slowly, almost as though he’s unsure of the gesture. But when he grazes his fingers lightly over Jungkook’s knuckles, a shiver runs through him.
The touch is delicate, unhurried, but it carries with it an intimacy that goes beyond words.
The world seems to hold its breath.
“I’m not sure how I got here,” Jungkook admits, his voice quiet, unsure if he’s talking about the moment or something that’s been quietly growing between them all this time. “I never thought... I’d find myself here, with you.”
Taehyung’s expression softens, a quiet understanding blooming in his eyes.
“Me neither,” he whispers, his voice barely audible, but the sincerity in it lingers. “But sometimes, things happen like this. Unexpectedly, yet... perfectly.”
The words hang in the air between them, soft promises and silent hesitations that neither of them can quite put into words.
The idea of the marriage, the alliance between their kingdoms, feels distant now. Like a faint, lingering hum that’s slowly fading into the background.
The weight of their responsibilities, their families' expectations, all of it seems so far away, as though it belongs to another world.
Jungkook turns his gaze toward Taehyung, really looks at him for the first time.
There’s something different in the way he sees him now, beyond the crown and the rigid roles they’ve both been moulded into. Something... real. Something that stirs a longing deep within him. He doesn’t want to pull away from it, whatever it is.
“You’re not what I expected,” Jungkook murmurs, his voice thick with the emotions he hasn’t allowed himself to feel until now. His words tremble in the quiet night air.
Taehyung’s lips curl into that same small, knowing smile, the kind that makes Jungkook’s pulse race. “What did you expect?”
Jungkook laughs softly, the sound escaping him like a release, the tension he’s held all night slipping away with it. It’s a genuine laugh, filled with warmth, and for the first time tonight, he feels free. “I’m not sure. But this... this is nothing like I imagined.”
Taehyung’s smile deepens, and for a moment, Jungkook wonders if he’s been waiting for this very admission. Waiting for him to stop hiding behind the mask of duty and expectation, to see them both— truly see them— in a new light.
Before Jungkook can say anything else, Taehyung steps closer.
His hand rises, slow and deliberate, until it hovers near Jungkook’s cheek.
It brushes against his skin so softly, so tenderly, that it almost feels like a question.
A question Jungkook isn’t sure how to answer, but he knows he doesn’t want to pull away. So, he lets his eyes flutter close as he leans into the touch, his breath hitching as the warmth of Taehyung’s fingers sears a path across his skin.
It’s a delicate thing, this intimacy.
There’s no rush, no sense of urgency. Just the soft press of Taehyung’s hand against his face, as though it’s a gesture that has been years in the making, one neither of them dared to act on until now.
Jungkook’s pulse quickens, his body betraying him in the most beautiful of ways.
Every inch of him feels alive, every nerve ending alight with the brush of Taehyung’s touch, the heat that swells between them like a flame igniting.
He breathes in deeply, the scent of Taehyung— fresh and earthy, with a trace of something floral— filling his senses and making his head spin.
And then, without a word, Taehyung leans in, closing the final, breathless distance between them.
The kiss begins like a secret. Slowly, almost hesitantly.
Taehyung’s lips brush against Jungkook’s, featherlight, like the ghost of a thought too soft to say aloud.
There’s no urgency, only the hush of something fragile unfolding, like silk unravelling in slow motion. It’s tender, tentative, a quiet question held between heartbeats.
And Jungkook… he melts into it.
His breath catches, and for a moment, everything else falls away.
There’s no crown, no ballroom, no obligations. Only the warmth of Taehyung’s lips against his, the softness that deepens with each passing second.
Jungkook doesn’t pull away. Instead, he leans forward, his hand reaching almost instinctively to the nape of Taehyung’s neck, fingers brushing the soft strands of hair there like they were always meant to.
It’s a delicate thing, the way their lips move. At first, almost a whisper, as though they’re both afraid of breaking something fragile.
Taehyung tilts his head just so, and when his tongue grazes lightly along the seam of Jungkook’s lips, it’s gentle, almost shy, like a secret wanting to be let in.
And Jungkook?
Jungkook parts for him. Easily. Willingly.
His heart stutters in his chest, and he’s not sure if it’s the cool air or the warmth of Taehyung’s kiss that makes him shiver.
There’s nothing rushed about it. No sharp edge. Solely warmth blooming like a slow sunrise. Their lips move in rhythm, languid and lush, tasting, learning. Each movement unspools like honey on the tongue.
Taehyung exhales softly into the kiss, and the sound curls around Jungkook’s spine like smoke.
He can feel the whisper of breath on his skin, the delicate press of Taehyung’s palm against his jaw.
Every brush of lips, every shift of weight, feels like worship.
Jungkook’s hand drifts downward, fingertips skimming the contour of Taehyung’s waist, feeling the subtle tension of muscle beneath fine fabric. He pulls him closer, greedy for the contact, for the solidity of him, and Taehyung lets him— pressing in, mouth lingering as if he can’t quite bring himself to stop.
Their kisses grow bolder, deeper. Not rushed, never rushed, but more certain now. Like they’ve both stepped off a ledge and are content to fall.
The world spins quietly around them, and their mouths keep moving— tasting, pressing, pausing— like a song played only once in a lifetime, meant just for them.
Taehyung’s lips part Jungkook’s again, slower this time, their tongues meeting in a slow dance that sparks low in Jungkook’s spine.
It’s devastatingly tender. Intimate. The soft ache that curls under his ribs and settles there, warm and impossible to ignore.
He breathes Taehyung in like he’s something sacred, something he wasn’t supposed to touch but now can’t let go of.
Their foreheads brush. Their lips barely part.
When they finally pull back, it’s slow, reluctant, like drifting to the surface after being held underwater by something beautiful.
Jungkook’s eyes flutter open, dazed and heavy-lidded, lips tingling, chest rising and falling like he’s been running through a dream.
Taehyung’s face is close. His breath fans across Jungkook’s cheek, warm and even. One hand remains at his jaw, thumb brushing tenderly across the edge of his mouth, like he’s afraid the kiss might disappear if he stops touching it.
Jungkook pulls back just slightly, enough to meet Taehyung’s eyes.
There’s something there, something unspoken but clear, a promise and a question all at once. It sends a thrill through Jungkook. Electric, soft, and aching.
“I never imagined this would be how we start,” Jungkook whispers, his voice thick, laden with emotions he hasn’t dared to explore until now.
Taehyung nods slowly, his breath soft and measured against Jungkook’s cheek. “Neither did I.”
But it doesn’t feel wrong. Not for a second.
In fact, it feels right, in a way Jungkook can’t explain.
It’s as though everything, all of the arrangements, all the expectations, all the weight of their families’ histories and legacies, had been leading them to this quiet, intimate moment. This space between them, that is theirs and theirs alone.
And this knowledge sends a thrill through Jungkook. Something that is soft and aching and eager all at once. He doesn’t know what comes next. He doesn’t know where this is going. But there’s one thing he’s sure of:
Whatever it is, he doesn’t want to let go.

“So…” Jimin trails off dramatically as he pushes open the doors to Jungkook’s chambers, his voice lilting with playful curiosity.
He doesn’t come alone. Yoongi follows behind him with an unreadable expression, and Hoseok is already lounging on the divan with a cup of tea in hand, clearly enjoying himself.
“Shut up,” Jungkook groans before Jimin can say anything further, flopping face-first onto the velvet cushions of his chaise. “Hoba, tell him to shut up.”
Hoseok, ever the picture of sunshine and trouble, giggles behind the rim of his teacup.
“I could never do such a thing to His Royalty,” he says with exaggerated innocence, his tone betraying the smirk tugging at his lips.
Jungkook lifts his head just enough to gape at him. “Betrayed by my own. Is this how my life is going to be now?”
Yoongi snorts as he takes a seat by the window, stretching his legs with all the grace of a bored cat. “One would have thought he’d become more mature, now that he’s about to be married.”
That makes Jungkook go rigid for half a second. Just a flicker, barely noticeable if you didn’t know him. But they did know him.
“Hahah,” he forces out, a laugh entirely too high-pitched to be natural. “Very funny, hyung.”
Yoongi leans back, his smirk deepening. “Speaking of funny. You know, I discovered something interesting this morning.”
Jungkook narrows his eyes immediately, dread curling in his stomach. “Why do I feel like I’m not going to like this?”
Yoongi, without even glancing at him, turns to Hoseok and says with the air of a casual revelation, “You know, Hoba, I heard the King defended our Prince in the council assembly.”
Hoseok lights up like a lantern. “He did! If his eyes could puncture Lord Baek, that man would’ve had a very short evening.”
Jimin claps dramatically, plopping down beside Jungkook. “Defending his to-be-betrothed honour! How romantic,” he sighs, fluttering his lashes.
Jungkook sits up so fast it nearly sends the cushions flying.
“The King just did what he would’ve done for anyone,” he says quickly, way too quickly. “Nothing happened, not like that. Not in the way you’re—” He cuts himself off, realising he’s just giving them more fuel.
Yoongi raises an eyebrow, taking a slow sip of his tea. “...and why does His Grace sound so annoyed by it?” he asks innocently.
“Shut up,” Jungkook screeches, grabbing the nearest pillow and launching it at Hoseok, who ducks with practised ease. “Oh my god, I swear— I’d rather have you call me by my name in front of the entire court than use my title while saying that.”
“But Your Grace,” Hoseok says with mock horror, pressing a hand to his chest like a scandalised lady-in-waiting. “How could I be so informal with the Future King of Dalnara?”
“Oh, heavens,” Jungkook groans, dragging both hands over his face as he collapses backwards again. “Why are you all like this?”
“I’m loving this,” Jimin declares, practically bouncing in his seat.
“Of course you are,” Jungkook mutters. “You devil.”
Yoongi watches all of this unfold with a quiet amusement, his fingers tapping gently against his cup.
“But tell me,” he says at last, his gaze sliding toward Hoseok, “what exactly happened? You were there, weren’t you?”
“Oh-ho-ho,” Hoseok says, rubbing his hands together with glee, eyes sparkling like he’s about to tell a ghost story around a campfire. “Oh, this is going to be so fun.”
Jimin leans in, eyes gleaming. “Spill.”
“I mean, it started off normal,” Hoseok begins, shifting into storyteller mode. “Council meeting, Lord Baek being a prick as usual—”
“Sure he was,” Yoongi nods.
“—and then Lord Baek made some passive-aggressive comment about Jungkook’s lack of diplomatic experience and how he’s too young to be involved in certain matters—”
“Which he said right after Jungkook presented a perfectly sound policy proposal,” Hoseok adds, glancing toward Jungkook with a proud smile.
“Of course,” Jimin says, already annoyed on Jungkook’s behalf.
“And before anyone else could even speak, His Majesty—” Hoseok draws out the title, grinning when Jungkook scowls, “—turned to Lord Baek, and very calmly, but very clearly, said: ‘I believe Prince Jungkook has spoken wisely and with insight. If your vision cannot keep up with his clarity, perhaps you should reconsider your place at this table.’”
The room goes silent for a beat.
Jimin’s jaw drops. “He did not.”
“Oh, he did,” Hoseok crows.
Jungkook buries his face in a cushion. “I hate all of you.”
“You love us,” Jimin says, patting his back.
Yoongi looks amused but thoughtful. “Defending your honour, standing by your side in a room full of backbiting old men… Sounds like a man already committed.”
“I said shut up!” Jungkook yells into the cushion, but his voice is muffled and tinged with a warmth none of them misses.
Jimin smiles, Yoongi smirks, and Hoseok leans back with a satisfied sigh.
“Ah,” he says happily, “young love.”
And Jimin? He clutches his chest like he’s about to faint. “Be still my heart.”
“Stop romanticizing this,” Jungkook grumbles from behind his pillow. “There is no love. Absolutely zero.”
“Sure,” Yoongi says flatly, staring at the ceiling like he’s counting the lies Jungkook is telling himself. “And I’m the Duchess of Aranel.”
“You’re all insufferable,” Jungkook groans, dragging the pillow down just enough to peek at his family with a glare that has no real bite.
“But seriously,” Jimin says, voice softening a little as he leans forward, “he didn’t have to speak up like that. Not in front of the whole council. That wasn’t just defending you. That was... something else. Now c’mon, you can’t be that dense!”
Jungkook goes quiet. His fingers fiddle with the edge of the cushion as his gaze drops to the floor.
“And when you two danced,” Hoseok adds, tone still teasing but gentler now, “I swear I could feel the tension from the other side of the hall.”
“Yeah,” Jimin hums, tilting his head. “Like a string pulled too tight between you.”
Yoongi watches Jungkook carefully, not smiling now. “Do you feel it?”
Jungkook’s breath catches, and he opens his mouth, then closes it again.
He thinks of the weight of Taehyung’s hand on his waist, the quiet way he’d murmured: “You’re perfect.” The feel of his palm against Jungkook’s cheek, the kiss that was more warmth than fire.
“I…” He swallows. “It’s complicated.”
“Of course it is,” Hoseok says gently. “You’re two kingdoms, two crowns, two lives that were never meant to intersect the way they have.”
“But they have,” Yoongi murmurs.
And that’s the thing, isn’t it?
They have.
Jungkook sighs, scrubbing a hand through his hair. “I didn’t really expect any of this. Him. I was prepared for duty, for sacrifice. I told myself I could accept a union even if I didn’t feel anything. But then, he enters and smiles, and it’s not just charming, it’s... disarming.”
His voice is quieter now, vulnerable. “And when he looks at me, I feel like... like I’m seen. Not the prince. Not the alliance. Me.”
No one says anything for a moment.
Then Jimin breaks the silence with a fond grin. “You’re a goner.”
“I’m not—” Jungkook starts, but Hoseok is already throwing a pillow at him.
“It’s adorable, really,” Hoseok says. “You blushed so hard when he called you my prince, I thought you’d combust.”
“You saw that?” Jungkook’s voice pitches high with embarrassment.
“We all saw that,” Yoongi deadpans. “Half the room saw that. The other half saw the way he looked at you. Like he would’ve taken on the entire kingdom if you so much as frowned.”
Jungkook groans again, but there’s no real frustration in it anymore, just flustered heat creeping up his neck. “This is a mistake.”
“It’s not,” Jimin says softly. “It might’ve started as a political alliance. But that doesn’t mean it can’t become something more.”
“And it’s okay to want that,” Hoseok adds, eyes kind.
Jungkook stares at them, at the people who’ve been with him through everything. Who tease him without mercy and support him without question.
He sighs again, quieter this time. “I don’t know what this is yet. But... I don’t think I want to run from it.”
There’s a beat of silence.
“Gods,” Yoongi mutters, “he’s falling.”
And just like that, the teasing starts again.
But Jungkook? This time, he doesn’t hide behind a pillow.
He just laughs, low and breathy, a sound filled with something softer than embarrassment. Something dangerously close to hope.
He laughs till a memory whisks him away.
The late afternoon stretches golden across the space, painting everything in shades of honey and rose. Beneath the billowing silks draped from silver stands, nobles and visiting dignitaries mingle with careful poise. Laughter floats through the air like drifting petals.
Jungkook stands near a sculpted hedge, a glass of something pale and sparkling in hand, trying — and failing — not to glance across the garden.
But there he is.
Taehyung.
Clad in soft ivory and dove-grey, a single sapphire brooch glinting like a secret at his collar. His laughter is rare today. Not quite absent, but careful. He nods to his guests with an ease honed over years, but even from here, Jungkook sees it: the tension in his jaw. The way his fingers tap once, twice, against the glass in his hand before stilling.
He’s waiting for something or someone.
“Looking a little lost there, Your Grace,” Hoseok murmurs at Jungkook’s side, appearing from seemingly nowhere. His grin is bright, teasing. “You could always go talk to him, you know. People do that, I’ve heard.”
Jungkook scoffs softly. “It’s a formal event.”
“It’s a garden party.”
“Same thing.”
Hoseok snorts into his drink and drifts away, leaving Jungkook frowning into his glass. A soft string quartet starts playing somewhere near the roses.
And then—
“Prince Jungkook.”
He turns too quickly.
Taehyung is standing just a few steps away, head tilted slightly, smile poised like a question. His eyes shine more than they should in this light.
“Your Majesty,” Jungkook murmurs, and tries very hard not to let his voice wobble.
“You seemed deep in thought,” Taehyung says, stepping closer. Not too close. But close enough that Jungkook can smell the faint trace of sandalwood and something sweet. “Care to share?”
Jungkook’s eyes flicker to Taehyung’s. “It wouldn’t be very princely of me to admit I was... people-watching.”
Taehyung’s smile turns conspiratorial. “Then you’re in luck. I happen to enjoy un-princely confessions.”
Their eyes linger.
“I was watching you,” Jungkook says quietly. And he doesn’t know why… but he doesn’t take it back.
Taehyung’s lips part just slightly, the surprise in his eyes soft. Then, gently, “Were you looking for something?”
Jungkook breathes, “No. Just looking.”
Another breath. Another heartbeat passed between them.
Someone laughs loudly nearby; a burst of real life that startles the moment.
Taehyung looks away first, smoothing a hand over his sleeve. “Would you walk with me?”
Jungkook nods before his brain can form a coherent word.
They wander through the narrow winding paths framed by trellises of late-blooming wisteria. Their shoulders brush once. Then again. They say nothing of it.
“I overheard Namjoon hyung talking about something interesting earlier,” Taehyung murmurs, voice low. “About… unions.”
Jungkook feels the heat crawl up the back of his neck.
“Oh.”
Taehyung smiles, but it’s thinner now. “You seemed surprised when Jin Hyung brought up.”
“I was,” Jungkook admits. “I didn’t know— I didn’t think…”
“That your name would be paired with mine?”
Jungkook looks at him. “Not like that. Not… not without asking.”
Taehyung hums. “And if I asked?”
The words are featherlight, barely more than a whisper. But they land like thunder.
Jungkook stops walking. His hand tightens slightly around the edge of his cloak.
“I think,” he says, slowly, “I’d still be surprised. But I wouldn’t mind.”
Taehyung looks at him for a long moment. Then he nods, just once.
And without a word, he gently reaches out, brushing his fingers against Jungkook’s sleeve. Not a touch. Just the hint of one.
Then he smiles, a real one this time.
“Come. They’ll miss us if we disappear.”
And though they return to the crowd, to the light and music and cordial diplomacy, Jungkook’s heart carries the memory of that almost-touch… and the question Taehyung hasn’t asked yet.
But might.
Soon.

On the other side of the west wing of Dalnara’s palace, far from the boisterous teasing inside the guest chambers, the night is very much alive— perhaps, in a decidedly similar way.
The fire crackles in the hearth, warm and golden, casting flickering shadows across the room’s carved stone walls. Laughter rings out.
“So,” Seokjin says, stretching the word as he settles into one of the plush velvet chairs with a wine goblet in hand. “How was the dance, Your Majesty?”
Taehyung doesn’t even glance up from the decanter he’s focused on, his expression smooth. “Which one?”
He pours a careful stream of red into his goblet, deliberately avoiding the grins forming around the room.
“Oh come on,” Namjoon says from where he’s sprawled by the hearth, one long leg stretched out, the other bent lazily. “Don’t act like you don’t know exactly which one he means.”
“Tell him Joon! Which one?! The audacity to say that.” Seokjin rolls his eyes.
“The one where half the court forgot how to breathe,” he continues, swirling his goblet dramatically.
Namjoon nods in agreement.
“No, because I, for one, nearly passed out from secondhand tension,” Park Hyungsik, Taehyung’s cousin and Duke of Vistara, exclaims.
Taehyung takes a slow sip of wine, raising an unimpressed brow. “That dramatic, was it?”
Namjoon hums. “You looked like you were about to kiss him right there in front of the royal treasurer.”
“Would’ve given the poor man a heart attack,” Seokjin adds, grinning. “Though it would have made the banquet more entertaining.”
Taehyung feigns an eye roll, low and unamused. “Right.”
“You two moved like you were choreographed by fate itself,” Seojoon, Hyungsik’s betrothed, continues, ignoring Taehyung, with a flourish of his hand. “The court’s still buzzing.”
“I believe I saw Lord Paek spill his wine on his lapel,” Namjoon muses. “Didn’t even notice.”
“Hmm,” Taehyung hums noncommittally, taking a sip of wine. “Tragic for his tailor.”
Seokjin lets out a scandalised sound, turning to Namjoon. “You— He is impossible.”
“Rightttt,” Hyungsik rolls his eyes.
“I agree,” Namjoon quips, grinning.
Taehyung chuckles, low and amused. “You all truly have no shame.”
“None,” they say in unison.
Taehyung leans back in his chair, letting the firelight flicker across his features. “It was a dance. He asked, I accepted, we danced. End of story.”
Seokjin lets out an incredulous laugh. “That was not the end of any story. That was the start of a whole damn novel, and I want the next chapter immediately.”
“Jin hyung,” Taehyung warns with mock exasperation.
Namjoon quirks a brow, quieter but more pointed. “But it meant something to you. Didn’t it?”
The fire cracks softly. Taehyung doesn’t answer immediately.
“It felt,” he says eventually, slowly, “unexpected, but not unpleasant.”
“Not unpleasant,” Seokjin snorts. “The romance practically bled off you two, and you say not unpleasant like you’re describing lukewarm soup.”
Taehyung smirks, but there’s a softness in his eyes he doesn’t bother hiding. “You want me to say I liked it?”
“We know you liked it,” Namjoon says with a small smile. “We just want to know if you know what it means.”
There’s a pause. Then, Taehyung sighs, fingers toying with the rim of his glass.
Namjoon exchanges a look with Seokjin, then back at Taehyung. “Are we wrong?”
There’s a beat of silence. A long one. The fire pops and hisses like it's listening in.
Seojoon chuckles under his breath. “He defended him in council too, remember?”
“Oh, right.” Seokjin snaps his fingers. “The famous glare. The ‘if looks could kill, Lord Baek would’ve burst into flames’ moment.”
Taehyung’s mouth twitches despite himself.
“Not that we’re blaming you,” Hyungsik continues casually, swirling his own drink. “The prince is… surprisingly easy to root for.”
“Mm,” Seokjin hums, tone cheeky. “He’s also easy on the eyes.”
Taehyung tosses a cushion at him. “You four are awful.”
“And you’re not denying it.” Seokjin beams as he catches the cushion. “Which is the most interesting part of all this.”
“Alright, fine.” Taehyung exhales, rubbing at the back of his neck. “He...”
“Go on,” Namjoon prompts, voice a little softer now.
Taehyung stares into the fire for a moment, his expression thoughtful. “It all feels… unexpectedly gentle. Not like the political games I’m used to navigating.”
Seojoon raises a brow. “So… he surprised you?”
Taehyung nods. “He looked at me like he wasn’t seeing a king. Just me. No throne, no title, just… Taehyung.”
For a moment, no one speaks.
“That’s dangerous,” Namjoon says, though his voice is more fond than wary.
“That’s real,” Seokjin corrects. “And real is rare.”
Taehyung leans forward to refill his glass, then pauses. “I spent so long preparing for this kind of arrangement like it was just another duty to fulfil. I told myself it wouldn’t matter who I married. That love was secondary. Unnecessary.”
“And now?” Hyungsik asks.
Taehyung lets out a small, dry laugh. “Now I’m standing on a balcony in the dark thinking about the way his breath caught when I touched his hand. The way he looked at me like I was more than a crown.”
Namjoon’s smile is knowing, quiet. “So you are falling.”
“Maybe,” Taehyung says at last. “Or maybe I already have, and I’m just slow to realize it.”
Seojoon whistles low. “And here I thought we were just going to drink and make fun of nobles.”
Taehyung groans, throwing a glower at Seojoon’s way. “Shut up, Seo.”
Seokjin makes a delighted noise, dramatically fanning himself with a cushion. “Oh, Joon, we must throw another ball. Maybe this time he’ll propose mid-waltz.”
Taehyung rolls his eyes and downs the rest of his wine. “And maybe this time I’ll exile you.”
“Then who will advise you on matters of the heart?” Seokjin shoots back smugly. “Certainly not Namjoon.”
Namjoon snorts. “Absolutely not. I’m just here to keep you both from setting the palace on fire.”
Taehyung leans back, letting the banter roll over him, a faint smile still ghosting on his lips.
Hyungsik lifts his goblet with a knowing smile. “To unexpected beginnings.”
Taehyung clinks his glass against theirs, the sound soft but certain.
“To him,” he breathes inaudibly.
Outside, the night hums quietly. The same moon that watches over the gardens now hangs above them too.
And somewhere in the stillness of his chest, Taehyung feels it. Like something fragile and growing has just been given space to breathe.
Something that, for the first time, he wants to protect not out of duty… but out of desire.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
It’s been three days since Yoongi arrived in Dalnara.
Two days since they cemented the alliance in a way that was both formal and… far more intimate than words on parchment.
And it’s been forty-eight hours.
Forty-eight excruciating, fluttering, restless hours since Jungkook last saw Taehyung’s face.
Not that he’s counting. (He is. Down to the minute. 2,880, if anyone was curious.)
Jungkook groans, flopping back onto the silken sheets of his bed dramatically, only to sit up a second later with an anxious bounce of his knee.
He runs a hand through his hair, ruffling the strands in frustration before burying his face in his palms with a muffled, “Why am I like this?”
Across the room, Hoseok’s voice still echoes from earlier in the evening: “You’re practically glowing, Your Grace.”
Jimin hadn’t helped either, cooing dramatically while elbowing him in the ribs. “So soft for your king already. Should I plan the bouquet toss?”
Even Yoongi— stoic, unreadable Yoongi— had allowed a smug little smirk to curve his mouth. “It’s endearing, in a tragic sort of way.”
Traitors. All of them.
Jungkook lies back again, staring up at the ornate ceiling. The moonlight filters in through the tall, arched windows, casting silver across the marble floors and making the golden accents of the room gleam. The air smells faintly of lavender and something citrusy— subtle, like the way the palace always smells at night.
He exhales slowly.
And then, softly, like a secret, he whispers it: “Taehyung.”
The name barely brushes the air, yet it feels like a match struck in the dark. His lips curve without his permission, the syllables lingering like heat in the back of his throat. He whispers it again, just to feel it.
It feels like a song. A confession and a prayer.
Jungkook presses his hands to his face and groans again, muffling a giggle that bubbles out of his chest unbidden.
This is… ridiculous. He’s ridiculous.
How was he going to look Taehyung in the eye again when just saying his name alone in the privacy of his room turns him into a fluttering mess of skin and breath?
Pulling himself up, Jungkook walks over to the window, bracing his forearms against the ledge.
The night air slips in through the glass panels, cool and fresh and slightly damp from the river below.
He wants to see him. He wants to walk those long corridors, step out onto that balcony again, maybe catch a glimpse of him leaning against the rail like before— brow furrowed in thought, eyes on the stars, so quiet and soft in a way few people ever saw.
But now, it’s different.
Now, they’re engaged.
Albeit privately for a while. But still.
Jungkook presses his lips together, uncertain.
How is he supposed to act now? What are you meant to say to someone who kissed you like you meant something… and then slipped back into crown and duty before the embers had even cooled? Before anyone else knew what had been promised between you?
He thinks of Yoongi— how casual he had seemed in Wolguk’s council chamber, so composed while announcing his own engagement, as if the moment wasn’t life-altering. As if it didn’t shift the ground beneath their feet.
And Jimin. Jimin had looked at Yoongi like there was no one else in the room.
That’s what Jungkook remembers most. That look.
The way their eyes had found each other.
It had been quiet, but unshakable. Steady as the tide. Something built over time, whispered between moments, threaded together with intention. That’s what love looked like, he thinks. What it sounded like.
A private language.
Jungkook swallows hard. He wonders if Taehyung had a look like that for anyone. Someone he’d known longer. Trusted more. Someone who knew how to reach past the guarded looks and careful words.
He thinks of how many eyes must be on Taehyung every day. How many nobles, royals, diplomats must orbit him, hoping to win some part of him? A glance. A favour. A hand.
A heart.
Jungkook’s stomach twists.
Because what if this wasn’t Taehyung’s choice? What if all of this— the smiles, the dance, the kiss— was just another duty, wrapped in silken words and sealed with a crown?
What if Jungkook were just another name on the list of alliances?
Swallowing dryly, Jungkook turns to lift his eyes to the stars, letting his gaze drift along the way they scatter around the glowing moon.
There’s a kind of order to them, he thinks— chaotic from afar, but maybe there’s meaning in the way they burn beside each other, silent and brilliant.
He wonders if that’s all he is, too. One of many. Just a single star flickering in a vast sky that surrounds someone like him.
Jungkook knows how things work between royals. He’s known it since he could understand his title— arranged marriages, political ties, bloodlines merging not for love, but for strength.
But still, despite the logic drilled into him, a small, stubborn part of him wants. Wants something softer. Something chosen. Something that blooms without permission.
Is that so wrong?
He closes his eyes and tries to chase the thought away. Tries to find the edge of reality again.
But instead, the memory appears. Uninvited and far too vivid.
Taehyung’s hand on his waist, the press of his palm steady and grounding. His breath ghosting over Jungkook’s cheek like a promise not yet spoken. And those eyes… dark, unreadable, flicking down to Jungkook’s mouth just before he kissed him like it meant something. Like he meant something.
Jungkook’s heart stutters in his chest.
Maybe… just maybe…
He jerks his head, shaking the thoughts away before they root too deeply.
He pushes off the ledge and stands abruptly, needing movement, needing space from the longing clawing at his ribs. He grabs the first robe he can find— something soft and flowy, slipping over his shoulders with practised ease— and rushes out of his chambers before he can talk himself out of it.
Anywhere. He needs anywhere else but the silence of his room.
His feet move on instinct, guiding him through the familiar stone halls of the palace. Past the dim torchlight and cold walls, until he ends up at the heavy doors of the library. A place where silence is allowed. Expected. Where no one would expect to find a prince craving air.
He eases the door open, wincing as it creaks softly, the sound splitting the stillness.
He slips inside and stops dead in his tracks.
His breath catches.
There, by the tall windows where moonlight pools on the floor like silver mist, stands Taehyung.
The king’s robe hangs open over his shoulders, one side slipping slightly down his arm. His inner shirt clings to his frame, whispering against the shape of him in the pale light. His hair is a soft, tousled mess. None of the usual polished elegance, just him, unguarded. The moonlight catches on his lashes as he turns, and then—
Their eyes meet, and everything stills.
Taehyung doesn’t speak at first. His gaze holds steady, trailing slowly over Jungkook’s frame— his windswept hair, the way his robe falls loosely from his shoulders, the slight flush high on his cheeks from moving too quickly.
There’s something intimate in the way Taehyung looks at him. Like he’s trying to memorise him.
“Prince Jungkook,” he finally murmurs, voice low and rough around the edges. It’s not cold. Not formal. Just… quiet.
Jungkook wets his lips and takes a careful step inside, letting the door fall shut behind him with a soft click that seems loud in the hush of the room.
“Your Majesty,” he replies, breath catching slightly in his throat. “I didn’t expect to find you here at this hour.”
Taehyung tilts his head, one brow arching faintly as he regards him.
“And yet, here you are as well, Prince Jungkook.”
The words are gentle, laced with the barest hint of amusement, but they carry something else too. An unspoken question.
Jungkook hesitates, then offers a faint, crooked smile. “I couldn’t sleep.”
“Neither could I,” Taehyung admits, stepping back from the window. His fingers trail absently along the edge of the windowsill, then fall to his side. “Too much noise in my head.”
Jungkook exhales, the tension in his shoulders easing at the confession. “Same.”
There’s a beat of silence, heavy and not at all uncomfortable. Just… aware.
Taehyung gestures lightly toward the chairs beside the low reading table. “Sit with me?”
Jungkook nods, pulse thudding in his ears as he crosses the room. His robes whisper against the floor, his steps soft. The whole library feels suspended in time, cradled in moonlight and dust and things unsaid.
They sit, close enough that their knees almost touch.
For a long moment, neither of them speaks.
Jungkook watches the way Taehyung’s fingers tap idly against the wood grain, watches the slight pull of his mouth like he’s turning over a thousand thoughts.
“How are you? I haven’t seen you in a while,” Jungkook mumbles, eyes trained on his fingers as they twist the rings around his knuckles. The candlelight catches on the gold, casting fleeting glints across his skin.
Taehyung watches him, gaze softening with something unnameable.
“Better now that you are here, my prince,” he whispers.
Jungkook stills.
His breath hitches, and his eyes lift abruptly to meet Taehyung’s. “What…?”
“There you are,” Taehyung murmurs, lips curving into a smile so warm it feels like a hand resting over Jungkook’s heart.
Jungkook flushes instantly, the blush blooming from his neck to his cheeks. “Your Majesty…”
“Taehyung,” the king says gently. “It’s Taehyung for you.”
“I— No. That’s improper, Your Majesty.”
Taehyung sighs, amusement dancing in his eyes. “What’s improper is my betrothed not calling me by my name.”
Jungkook’s throat bobs. “B-but no one knows. It’s still a secret. That makes it even more improper.”
Taehyung tilts his head slightly, something playful and unyielding in his tone. “There’s no one here, though…”
Jungkook opens his mouth, trying to formulate a proper rebuttal— but Taehyung leans forward just slightly, his voice dropping lower.
“Is it so wrong,” he says slowly, “that I want to hear what my name sounds like rolling from your lips, Jungkook-ssi?”
Jungkook goes utterly still.
His heart thuds painfully against his ribs, his breath stuttering as his eyes meet Taehyung’s. Wide and vulnerable.
Taehyung shifts closer, slow and deliberate, like approaching a skittish deer in the woods. He stops just in front of him, and with gentle confidence, reaches out to take Jungkook’s hand.
Their fingers meet, warm skin against skin, and a shiver traces its way up Jungkook’s spine.
“Is it wrong,” Taehyung murmurs, brushing his thumb across the back of Jungkook’s hand, “that I want to hear my betrothed whisper my name before he leaves for his place soon? Jungkook-ah…”
Jungkook’s breath catches like he’s been plunged into a warm bath. He sways slightly with the weight of it— the way Taehyung says his name, the way it feels like a secret shared between them alone.
“Taehyung,” he breathes.
Taehyung’s eyes flash, his whole body going still, like something inside him just locked into place.
Jungkook rises slowly, until they’re only a breath apart.
“Taehyung,” he whispers again, softer this time. Like a confession.
Taehyung swallows. His throat works visibly, his tongue darting out to wet his lips, slow and unconscious.
Jungkook’s gaze drops immediately, locking onto the movement. His lips part slightly in response, and he feels the pull— stronger this time, magnetic and impossible to resist.
Taehyung doesn’t hesitate anymore. He leans in, closing the distance between them with agonising slowness, giving Jungkook every second to back away.
But Jungkook doesn’t.
And when their lips meet… It’s not fragile, nor is it hesitant.
It’s quiet, yes— but sure. Confident in a way it hadn’t been before.
The kiss deepens as they lean into each other, breath mingling, fingers curling tighter.
When they part, it’s only because their lungs demand it. Their foreheads remain pressed together, sharing air, their hands still locked.
Jungkook’s lashes flutter as he exhales shakily.
Taehyung smiles, barely a whisper against his skin.
“Good night, my prince.”
And for the first time in days, Jungkook feels like he might actually sleep.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
It’s been a month. A month since Jungkook returned from Dalnara. Since he last saw Taehyung. Four weeks since he felt that warm hand brush against his skin, since soft lips had pressed against his own in the quiet hush of the library.
It’s been a month of holding his breath.
A month of sleepless nights and restless days, of feeling the weight of his heart growing heavier with each passing moment.
A whole month.
Since then, the air around him has grown thick with whispered speculations and courtly conversations. Some subtle, others pointed. It’s been a month since Yoongi convinced their father to consider the union not only as a political advantage but as a possibility that made sense. At least on paper.
The arrangement is now official. The letters exchanged between kingdoms. The discussion held behind grand doors. The nobles briefed. The people… curious.
And yet.
Jungkook hasn’t been allowed to see him. Apparently, it’s “inappropriate” now.
Now. As if it wasn’t already.
He scoffs softly at the thought, lying sprawled on his bed, one hand draped across his chest while the other hovers near his nightstand. Near that letter.
Just yesterday, Taehyung had sent it. Written in that same bold, fluid script Jungkook had grown to recognise instantly. There was no extravagant seal, no embossed insignia, merely his name, written on the back in a curling scrawl. Jungkook-ah.
It felt almost... informal. Almost like...
Jungkook shakes his head, shooing that thought away.
He picks it up again.
The folds have begun to soften, worn at the corners where his thumbs trace over and over, as though by touch alone he could close the space between them.
He brings it to his nose. Not because it’s scented, but because he imagines that, if he tries hard enough, he’ll catch a trace of Taehyung.
A whisper of his breath. A trace of lavender from his skin. The ink from his fingers. Of the night air in Dalnara. Of warmth.
He breathes in. Slowly.
Then, he begins to read.
My dearest Jungkook-ah,
I wasn’t sure if I should write this. I’m not even sure what I’m trying to say. But there’s a quiet tonight in the halls, and you are loud in my mind.
It’s strange. I remember standing beside you when this arrangement was announced, and all I could think was how still you were. Like you had already braced for the storm.
I thought I had too.
But lately… I’ve found myself looking for you. In the courtyards. At meetings. In laughter that sounds too much like yours.
I didn’t think you’d become someone I missed.
But I do. Fiercely. Gently. In ways that sneak up on me when I least expect it.
I miss the way you look at the world like it has wronged you, but you’re still willing to forgive it. I miss the way your voice softens when you ask questions you pretend not to care about.
Dalnara has not changed. But I have. Because of you.
When I defended you at council, I wasn’t just doing what a king should. I was angry. Not because they questioned your worth, but because they dared to speak your name like they knew you.
I don’t know when this changed. I don’t know if it’s supposed to. But I think about the way your voice drops when you’re nervous. The way you look at the stars as if they owe you answers.
And now I wonder what it would be like to hear my name in your voice when we meet again. Not as a formality. Not as a title. But as something… else.
I didn’t expect you. And yet here you are. Lingering in my thoughts, even in absence.
And you keep on lingering, Jungkook-ah. In my halls. In my tea. In the way I hold my pen now, thinking how you’d mock my handwriting if you saw it smudged like this.
Sometimes I catch myself smiling for no reason, only to realise it’s because your name passed through my thoughts like a whisper.
They speak of duty, of alliance, of war and law and crown. But no one speaks of what it does to a man, waiting for someone he cannot touch.
If I close my eyes, I see you. If I listen closely, I hear your laughter echoing between my ribs. My prince, how strange that time moves forward, and yet I remain caught in the space between our last goodbye.
I would trade every sword in my name to press a kiss to your palm again.
Come to me if you can. And if you cannot— write.
Yours— if you want me to be,
Taehyung
Jungkook stares at the letter for a long time after finishing. He doesn’t read it again. He doesn’t have to. He knows it by heart now. Knows where the ink blots, where the word curves down as though Taehyung himself hesitated writing it.
His thumb traces the closing line, slow, reverent. The one line always leaves him breathless.
Jungkook swallows thickly, his eyes lingering on the final loop of Taehyung’s name.
The ink there is heavier. Like he’d pressed the pen down harder, as if he’d almost stopped, almost scratched it out.
A fragile line.
Yours— if you want me to be.
Because this wasn’t supposed to be this. It was supposed to be politics. A union. Strategic, not sentimental.
And yet…
And yet, Jungkook can still feel the ghost of Taehyung’s breath against his hand from that night. Can still hear his name whispered into silence like it was something precious.
He places the letter down carefully, as though afraid it might vanish if he’s careless.
A knock sounds, startling him.
He scrambles before clearing his throat. “Come in.”
The door creaks open, and a guard bows politely. “Your Grace, the Crown Prince has requested your presence.”
Jungkook nods once, dismissing him. As the door shuts, he takes a deep breath. One beat. Then another. Steadying his heart that’s already leaping ahead of him.
But his heart? It still gives a startled thud against his chest as he stands, pushing away the flood of thoughts rushing at him.
His movements are instinctive, a little stiff with anticipation, but there’s no denying the fire burning in his veins now.
He takes a deep breath. Focus.
When he reaches Yoongi’s chambers, Jimin’s delighted grin is the first thing he sees, and his heart lightens a fraction, despite the nerves knotting his stomach.
“Here he is,” Jimin announces, arms wide as if Jungkook has just returned from battle.
Jungkook can’t help the amused sigh that escapes his lips. “You’d think I was about to walk into a warzone, or was summoned to a festival.”
Yoongi raises a brow with an amused smirk. “In a way, you were. A private one.”
Jimin laughs. “A festival of reunion and romance, perhaps?”
“Hyung!” Jungkook groans, face flushing despite himself.
Yoongi chuckles as he gestures to a folded set of clothes lying neatly on a bench. “Here. Change into these, you’ll blend better. Taehyung will be waiting in a bustling border village. It's neutral enough for a quiet meeting and public enough to cover your tracks.”
Jungkook’s eyes brighten as he hears Taehyung’s name. The mere thought of him sends a spark of warmth through him, igniting something deep in his chest that he’s been holding back for far too long.
“He will?”
Yoongi nods. “He’s been wanting to. I could only stall him for so long.”
“What about Appa?” Jungkook asks, his brow furrowing.
This isn’t just a simple trip. He’s going to see Taehyung. A private meeting, a rendezvous shrouded in secrecy. He can’t afford to raise suspicion.
“I’ve already covered for you,” Yoongi says smoothly. “I told him you’re inspecting the village lands. There’s some intel on unrest in the region, so it’ll be believable.”
Jungkook beams, practically glowing as he takes the clothes in his arms.
Jimin steps forward, his teasing replaced by something softer. He takes Jungkook’s hand. “Promise me you’ll be careful. Just because it’s love doesn’t mean it’s safe.”
Jungkook sighs fondly. “Jiminie, I know how to fight. I’m the best at this. You know that.”
“You’re still like my baby brother,” Jimin murmurs. “I’ll always worry about you.”
Yoongi clears his throat. “Which is why I’m sending a small party with you. Disguised.”
Jungkook groans. “Hyung—”
“I’m not compromising on this.”
“But it’s Taehyung. I’ll be safe with him. Together we—”
Yoongi raises a brow.
Jungkook softens, trying again. “They can follow me till the edge of the village. But when I’m with him… I don’t want eyes on us. Not for this. Please.”
Yoongi hesitates, then sighs. “Fine. But don’t be reckless.”
Jimin leans against the wall, smirking. “My, my. Jungkookie, running off for a secret lovers’ rendezvous. Who would’ve thought?”
Jungkook rolls his eyes dramatically and spins toward the changing screen. “And on that note, I’m leaving before this becomes unbearable.”
As he disappears behind the partition, Jimin laughs while Yoongi smiles into his cup of tea.
Jungkook’s fingers tremble as he fastens the cloak, the fabric soft against his skin. As he dresses, his mind races.
This is real. He’s going to see Taehyung again. The thought alone makes his heart skip, the anticipation building in his chest like a sweet ache he’s learned to crave.
When he emerges, his expression is calm, but inside, he feels like he’s on the edge of a cliff. He’s going to meet the one person who’s captured his heart in ways he can’t quite explain.
Yoongi watches him closely. “You’ll be fine. Just remember to breathe.”
Jungkook offers him a grin, a mix of nerves and excitement. “I’ll do my best.”
With one final look at his brother and Jimin, he strides out, the weight of the world falling away with each step.
This, this is for him. For them.
And as he leaves the palace gates behind, his heart begins to race with each passing moment.
He’s finally going to see Taehyung.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
Taehyung paces inside the small, tucked-away room, the old wooden floor creaking beneath his boots as he glances once more at the window.
It’s been almost a month since he last breathed the same air as Prince Jungkook.
A month since their last secret kiss. Since the world around him dimmed in comparison to the light in that boy’s eyes.
Taehyung sighs, his fingers curling into his sleeves as he retraces all the moments that led him here. To this odd, delicate arrangement that feels more like a whispered gift than a negotiation.
A carefully wrapped present in the guise of politics.
He still can’t quite believe it.
None of this would’ve happened, could’ve happened, if not for forces far beyond his understanding. Unseen hands pulling strings behind fate’s curtain.
Taehyung has never been religious, but he has always been deeply spiritual. He believed in energy, in connection. In the things that exist beyond sight— between stars, between breaths, between heartbeats. And lately… lately he’s beginning to believe in something more.
Because how else does one explain the way Jungkook had walked into his life? Or how their paths aligned just so— threads crossing in the middle of two kingdoms.
A smile pulls faintly at his lips, but the rest of him hums with restless nerves. The butterflies in his stomach have been in chaos since last night, fluttering with no sign of calming.
He runs a hand through his hair, exhaling slowly.
Oh, how he misses those starry eyes. That curious, animated face that lights up like morning. That mouth— soft and sharp and far too dangerous for its own good.
Suddenly parched, Taehyung swallows and walks to the small table in the corner. He pours water into a cup with slightly trembling fingers, the sound of the trickle grounding him.
He never imagined he could feel this way. This full. This alive. This reckless with want.
He’d always read about it, of course— those verses in old poems, the waxy ink of love letters penned across centuries. But he had always thought them exaggerated. Romanticized. A fantasy for those not born with crowns and titles.
The weight of his own had been heavy from the moment it was placed on his brow. Heavy enough to press dreams out of him. To bury whims beneath duty, to ask him to become more than he was, while slowly forgetting what that was in the first place.
He had spent years learning to carry it.
And now… now he finds himself dreaming again.
He yearns. He aches.
He longs.
And in that longing, he finds a piece of himself he thought he had lost.
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
The sun has dipped low by the time Jungkook’s horse slows near the outskirts of the village.
Dust clings to the hem of his cloak, his hood drawn low over his face. Around him, life bustles in cheerful disarray: vendors calling out their wares, children weaving through narrow alleys, the scent of roasted chestnuts thick in the air. The village straddles the edge of Dalnara’s territory, far from court eyes, but vibrant in its own way.
Jungkook dismounts near an inn, tying the reins with practised ease. The guards Yoongi had sent trail behind him, now blending expertly into the crowd. One of them nods once, a signal. They’ve scouted and cleared the area.
Now it’s on him.
With his heart in his throat, Jungkook steps into the village square, scanning the faces that blur past him. He’s not sure what he’s looking for.
Until he is.
Jungkook feels his heart climbing up his throat as he walks toward the modest hut where Taehyung is staying.
He wants to look around— wants to take in the bustle of the village, the scent of baked bread, the distant laughter of passing traders— but he can’t. His entire world has narrowed to this moment. To this place.
It’s strange, this lightness that follows him. This breathlessness in his chest, this quiet hum beneath his skin.
Strange, because this has never been him.
But maybe it’s always been who he wanted to be.
When the hut finally comes into view, Jungkook slows. His steps falter like his heart has leapt ahead without him.
Rubbing a nervous palm over the fabric at his waist, he draws in a shaky breath. Then another.
And then he knocks.
A beat of silence.
Then, a voice from within, velvety and oh, so familiar.
“Coming.”
Jungkook closes his eyes for the briefest second, as if bracing himself. That voice… he wants to wrap himself in it.
The door creaks open.
And in the quiet that follows, not one but two breaths hitch.
Taehyung had thought he was prepared. He had seen Jungkook dressed in finery before— in silks, in sapphires, in golds— but never quite like this.
There’s something about the way the prince looks tonight that steals the air from his lungs. His hair falls just so, his eyes wide, lit from within. He looks like sunlight in motion.
Taehyung drinks him in, reverent.
And Jungkook? He feels his own breath leave him entirely.
Taehyung is standing in loose robes, his hair tousled and eyes soft. He looks… real. Warm and tired and glowing in the lamplight.
“Jungkook,” Taehyung breathes, his voice catching as his gaze traces the prince’s form. “You…”
“Your Highness,” Jungkook whispers, voice trembling.
But Taehyung only closes the space between them by a fraction, something raw flickering in his gaze.
“Taehyung,” he murmurs, eyes searching the prince’s. “Say my name.”
He leans forward just slightly.
“Please,” he whispers. “Don’t torture me like this.”
Jungkook’s breath stutters.
And then, soft as starlight, he whispers, “Taehyung.”
Almost inaudible, but Taehyung hears.
He hears everything.
And something in him aches.
A slow, sweet ache, like the warmth that floods your chest when the sun finally crests the edge of the earth after a long night.
Jungkook’s gaze doesn’t waver. His cheeks are flushed, eyes wide and unsure, but he holds. As if he’s waiting to see what Taehyung will do with the offering he’s just made.
And Taehyung… Taehyung steps forward.
Gently.
Carefully.
Like Jungkook is a dream he doesn’t want to wake from.
Their distance shortens to nothing, save for the air between them, charged and alive.
“You don’t know what you do to me,” Taehyung says softly. His fingers twitch at his side, desperate to reach out, to feel again.
Jungkook swallows thickly.
“I think I might,” he breathes.
And that does it.
Taehyung lifts a hand— slow, open, giving him every second to pull away— but Jungkook doesn’t.
He stands, eyes fluttering only when Taehyung’s fingers graze his cheek, his thumb brushing beneath the prince’s eye like he’s trying to memorize this exact moment.
“You came,” Taehyung murmurs.
“I’d come a thousand times over,” Jungkook whispers back. “If it meant seeing you like this.”
Taehyung’s breath catches. His hand slides to cup the nape of Jungkook’s neck, pulling him just a little closer— foreheads touching, breath mingling.
For a heartbeat, they simply exist.
Together. Quietly. Tangled in things they’re still learning how to name.
Then Taehyung pulls back just enough to look at him. “Come in. Before I kiss you on the doorstep and give the village something to talk about for a decade.”
Jungkook blushes, light, breathless.
And with that, the door clicks shut softly behind them, leaving the quiet of the room to wrap around them like a soft blanket.
The space is small but cosy, lit only by the flickering glow of a few candles placed on the low wooden table and shelves around the room. The scent of dried herbs and wood smoke lingers in the air, grounding the moment in something simple, something real.
Taehyung moves to one of the chairs by the fire, his gaze lingering on Jungkook.
He sits down slowly, letting his fingers brush across the edge of the seat as if he’s unsure of where to place himself. His eyes are still locked on Jungkook, like they’ve never really left him, like he’s trying to hold onto this moment before it slips away.
Jungkook follows him with a steady, deliberate pace, but his eyes never leave Taehyung, as though he’s afraid that if he looks away for even a second, this might all vanish.
“Come,” Taehyung says, his voice a soft invitation, and his hand pats the seat next to him.
Jungkook’s breath catches as he moves closer, his pulse quickening under the weight of Taehyung’s stare.
When he reaches the chair, he hesitates, his heart thundering in his chest. Taehyung smiles softly, a half-formed thing, like he knows exactly what Jungkook needs before he even asks.
“Don’t be shy,” Taehyung murmurs. “You’re safe here.”
Jungkook nods, as if the words settle deep inside of him, easing some of the tension he didn’t even realise he was holding. He lowers himself into the chair beside Taehyung, his knee brushing lightly against Taehyung’s in the process.
For a moment, they just sit in silence, letting the fire crackle and pop in the hearth, the only sound between them the rhythm of their breathing. Jungkook’s fingers twitch on his lap, wanting to do something, anything, to bridge the space between them.
Taehyung notices.
Before Jungkook can even speak, Taehyung reaches out, his hand gently covering Jungkook’s. It’s a simple touch, nothing overwhelming, but it’s enough to make Jungkook’s heart lurch in his chest.
“You’re trembling,” Taehyung observes, his voice soft and steady.
“I… I think I’ve been trembling for days,” Jungkook admits quietly, his words almost lost in the crackle of the fire.
He glances over at Taehyung, his breath caught in his throat as he takes in the sight of the king in the low light. The way his hair falls messily over his forehead, the warmth of the fire dancing across his features.
Taehyung’s smile softens. He leans forward slightly, his thumb brushing over the back of Jungkook’s hand in slow, soothing motions. “I told you, you’re safe here.”
Jungkook’s chest tightens, and he feels something shift in the pit of his stomach.
“I don’t know how to be safe with you,” he whispers, the words coming out before he can stop them.
Jungkook feels the weight of his confession, but it’s true. He doesn’t know what to do with himself when he’s so close to Taehyung. He doesn’t know how to keep his heart from breaking open, spilling everything he’s been holding in.
Taehyung’s eyes darken just slightly, and his hand doesn’t move from Jungkook’s. He doesn’t pull away, doesn’t seem uncomfortable by the vulnerability hanging between them. Instead, he leans in even closer, his voice low and steady.
“Then let me show you how,” Taehyung whispers.
He lifts his free hand to gently cup Jungkook’s cheek, the touch sending a jolt of warmth through him. “Let me teach you.”
Jungkook’s heart races in his chest. The words are simple, but the weight of them settles deep in his bones. Let me teach you.
There’s a beat, just a breath between them, before Taehyung leans in slowly, giving Jungkook every chance to pull back, to turn away. But Jungkook doesn’t. Instead, he finds himself leaning in as well, drawn to him in a way that he can’t explain, like the distance between them is a force he’s been resisting for too long.
When their lips finally meet, it’s not the same as before. It’s not tentative, not hesitant. There’s no question here, no uncertainty.
It’s a soft, slow melding of warmth and breath, an exhale shared between them that feels like the only thing that makes sense.
Jungkook’s fingers find their way to Taehyung’s arm, gripping him lightly as if he needs to ground himself to something real.
Taehyung’s hand moves to the back of his neck, pulling him closer, deepening the kiss with a hunger that surprises them both.
It’s gentle at first, but it grows more urgent as they both seek something they’ve been holding back for too long.
When they finally pull away, breathless and flushed, they’re both grinning, the quiet sound of their laughter mingling with the crackling fire.
Jungkook presses his forehead to Taehyung’s, his fingers still resting against his arm.
And in that moment, the rest of the world disappears. No responsibilities, no duties, no plans. Just the soft rise and fall of their chests as they breathe in sync, lost in the intimacy.
Jungkook’s heart is still racing, but it’s no longer from nerves.
No, it’s the kind of racing that comes when you realise you’ve wanted something for so long, and now that it’s within reach, it feels almost too good to be true.
The distance between them feels so small, so natural now, and he can’t help but want to close it, once more, completely.
His fingers, still resting on Taehyung’s arm, begin to trace small, unspoken patterns against his skin.
Taehyung shifts slightly, his breath hitching as Jungkook’s touch sends a ripple of warmth across his chest.
“Jungkook…” he murmurs, his voice low and almost pleading.
The way he says his name, the quiet reverence in his tone, makes Jungkook’s chest tighten with something more than just affection. It’s a promise. A silent declaration.
Jungkook pulls back just enough to meet Taehyung’s gaze, his heart softening at the sight of the king’s eyes darkened with emotion, lips slightly parted, as if he’s about to say something that could shatter the quiet spell between them.
But instead, Taehyung reaches up to gently tuck a stray strand of hair behind Jungkook’s ear, his fingers brushing so tenderly against his skin that it sends a shiver down his spine.
“Stay with me,” Taehyung whispers, and it’s not a command, not an order. It’s an invitation, a request so vulnerable that it makes Jungkook’s heart flutter.
Jungkook opens his mouth to say something, but the words catch in his throat.
The truth is, he’s been wanting this— no, needing this— for so long.
The connection between them, the intensity of it, has been building for weeks, months, even. But now that it’s here, right in front of him, he’s not sure how to express all the emotions crashing through him.
But Taehyung’s touch is gentle, and his gaze is steady. And for the first time, Jungkook feels like he’s not alone in this.
“I don’t want to go,” Jungkook whispers, his voice barely audible.
Taehyung’s lips quirk into a soft, knowing smile.
“Then don’t,” he replies, his thumb brushing over Jungkook’s lips as if to silence him. “Stay. Tonight. Let’s just be here, together.”
Jungkook swallows, the weight of his own feelings pressing down on him, and he nods, his throat tight.
He can’t put into words how badly he wants to stay— how badly he wants to be near Taehyung, without the distance of duties or kingdoms separating them. For tonight, he just wants to be with him.
Taehyung, sensing his hesitation, reaches out and gently takes both of Jungkook’s hands in his, pulling him closer once more.
With a soft, breathless sigh, Taehyung leans forward, his lips brushing against Jungkook’s again, slow and deliberate, savouring the warmth, the taste of him.
Jungkook responds immediately, his hands sliding to Taehyung’s waist, pulling him even closer, if that’s even possible.
The kiss deepens, but it’s still tender, almost reverent. Like each touch is an exploration, a quiet question asked between them.
When they finally break apart, they’re both flushed, their breaths heavy.
Taehyung’s forehead rests against Jungkook’s once more, and this time, it feels like a bond is being solidified. Something more than just a kiss, more than just a fleeting moment. It’s something deep, something lasting.
“I think…” Jungkook starts, his voice rough, but his smile is soft, “I think I’m in trouble, Taehyung.”
Taehyung chuckles quietly, the sound vibrating through him.
“I think I might be, too,” he replies, his hands moving to Jungkook’s hair, threading his fingers through the dark strands, as if anchoring him to this moment.
“Then, we’ll be in trouble together,” Jungkook murmurs, his fingers tightening around Taehyung’s waist.
And for the first time in a long while, Jungkook feels at peace. Like this, right here, with Taehyung, is where he’s meant to be.
The world outside can wait. For now, it’s just them.

The palace is alive.
A soft golden glow seeps into every crevice, pouring from tall windows dressed in sheer ivory, pooling across polished marble floors and catching on the gilded trims of high archways.
Laughter ripples through the halls like sunlight on water, warm and unhurried, curling around conversations and hurried footsteps.
It’s a day like no other. Bustling yet breathless, heavy with anticipation and soft with something sweeter.
In one wing of the palace, dust motes dance lazily in the light, undisturbed, while the scent of lavender oil lingers faintly in the air— someone must’ve lit it to calm his nerves.
It’s not working.
Jungkook stands before a tall mirror, half-dressed and wholly restless.
The ceremonial robe hangs open at his sides, the silk catching the light in silver and pearl. His hair is half-styled, soft waves already curling at the nape of his neck. One boot is on. The other is forgotten at the foot of the bed.
His eyes, wide and unusually unsure, flick between his reflection and the attendants scurrying about the room.
He runs a hand down his face and exhales slowly.
It’s his wedding day.
There’s a knock. Then—
“We’re coming in whether you’re decent or not,” Jimin’s voice sing-songs through the door, and before Jungkook can even stand up straighter, he has already let himself in, Yoongi and Hoseok in tow.
Jimin halts mid-step when he sees the state of the room—
And Jungkook.
“Oh,” Jimin says, blinking. “You look like someone just told you the palace burned down.”
Yoongi arches a brow. “Did you sleep at all?”
Jungkook grunts and falls back dramatically onto the bed, flinging one arm over his face.
“No,” he mutters into his sleeve. “And I’m going to throw up.”
“You’ll be fine,” Hoseok says gently, walking over to the chair and picking up the remaining boot. “You’ve faced sword duels. You’ve ridden into tournaments. You even survived tea with Lady Shin without dying of boredom.”
“This is different,” Jungkook groans. “This is Taehyung.”
Yoongi lifts a brow. “For someone who’s been daydreaming with Taehyung’s name on their lips for days, you’re awfully dramatic.”
Jungkook turns red instantly. “I did not—!”
“You whispered his name in your sleep,” Jimin singsongs. “It was kind of adorable, if not borderline scandalous.”
“Gods above,” Jungkook mutters, burying his face in the pillow.
Hoseok laughs softly. “You should see your face.”
“I can’t,” Jungkook mumbles. “Because I’m dying.”
“You’re not dying,” Jimin says, tugging him upright. “You’re getting married.”
“That’s worse.”
“Drama queen,” Yoongi mutters.
But at the same time, there’s affection in the way they move around him.
Jimin starts brushing out his hair with quick, precise strokes. Hoseok picks out the proper accessories— thin rings, a lapel pin shaped like the kingdom’s crest, and the ceremonial sash in silver and blue. Yoongi, meanwhile, sits back and sips his tea like he’s merely watching a theatre unfold.
“Now, Your Highness, if you don’t stop fidgeting, I will be forced to tie your hands behind your back,” Jimin says in mock exasperation, threading the final gold button through Jungkook’s collar with deft fingers.
“That sounds like something Yoongi hyung would enjoy,” Jungkook mutters under his breath.
From across the room, Yoongi— dressed in dusky plum with a silver chain at his neck— snorts into his tea. “You’re not wrong. But I wouldn’t recommend wasting rope on you. You’d probably chew through it out of sheer nerves.”
Jungkook glares at his brother through the mirror. “Thanks for the vote of confidence.”
“I’m just saying,” Yoongi shrugs, ever dry, ever composed. “You’re vibrating like a hummingbird.”
Jungkook doesn’t dignify that with a response. His fingers twitch at his sides before he busies himself adjusting his sash.
“Do I… look alright?” he asks quietly.
All three of them pause.
“You look like you’re about to ruin the entire ballroom with how good you look,” Hoseok says.
“Yeah,” Jimin agrees, walking over to straighten his sleeve. “Taehyung’s gonna forget how to breathe.”
Jungkook swallows hard. “I don’t know what to do with all this feeling.”
Jimin pauses mid-motion. His hand rests on Jungkook’s shoulder.
“You don’t have to do anything with it,” he says gently. “You just have to show up.”
Jungkook’s eyes flick toward the mirror. He barely recognises the person looking back— his hair now neatly in place, his robes draped over his frame like armour woven from silks. He looks like a King. But more than that, he looks ready.
Almost.
“Do you think it’ll be okay?” he asks, quieter than before.
Yoongi finally puts down his tea and walks over. Places a hand on his brother’s shoulder.
“I think you’ll make it okay,” he says. “The both of you.”
Jungkook closes his eyes and lets that truth settle over him.
He’s still nervous, still a bit breathless with everything that’s about to unfold. But for the first time that morning, he feels something else blooming underneath the nerves.
Hope.
Just then, Namjoon peeks in, his eyes crinkling with excitement. “Ready for the first procession? How’s our groom?”
“Panicking,” Jimin supplies helpfully.
“Glowing,” Seokjin counters, stepping inside. “He’s glowing. Look at him. Like a whole moonbeam wrapped in silk.”
Jungkook flushes at that, ducking his head. “You’re all terrible.”
Seokjin trails in behind Namjoon, his outfit a vision in garnet blue and white, embroidered with gentle swirls of silver thread. He beams at Jungkook, stepping close to fix a wayward strand of hair.
“You look beautiful,” Seokjin says quietly, smoothing it behind Jungkook’s ear. “He won’t be able to take his eyes off you.”
Jungkook bites his bottom lip, a smile tugging at the corners. “He better not.”

Across the palace, in another grand room bathed in amber light, Taehyung stands by the open window, his back to the door.
The scent of blooming winter roses drifts in from the garden below, sweet and just a little too strong, clinging faintly to the silken drapes.
Taehyung’s ceremonial robe lies untouched on the divan, still carefully folded. Instead, he wears only his undershirt and loose trousers. The collar of his shirt is slightly open, and his hair is still a mess of soft brown curls. The delicate porcelain teacup in his hand has long since cooled, forgotten as he stares out past the courtyard and into the pale-blue morning.
It’s peaceful, but beneath that peace is a gentle panic simmering just under his skin.
He’s been quiet for too long.
A soft knock finally breaks the stillness, followed by the gentle squeak of the door opening.
“Why do you look like you’re about to recite your own eulogy?” Hyungsik’s voice cuts through the silence, laced with far too much amusement for this sacred hour.
He walks in dressed immaculately, his robes in deep garnet and gold, smugness practically an accessory.
Taehyung glances over, mouth twitching. “Do you always enter uninvited on wedding days?”
“I only do it when the groom-to-be is having an existential crisis by the window,” Hyungsik quips, letting the door close behind him.
He’s carrying a bag, which he lays reverently across the chaise before looking at Taehyung properly.
Just then, Seojoon enters. Leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, he starts, “You know you can’t go to your wedding dressed like that.”
Taehyung hums. “I’m not ready yet.”
“I thought you’d be dressed by now.”
“I got distracted.”
Hyungsik asks with a grin that’s far too smug for Taehyung’s liking. “By your cold tea?”
“By my life flashing before my eyes,” Taehyung deadpans.
“You’ve been sitting in that exact position for twenty-five minutes,” Seojoon sighs fondly, walking over and plucking the teacup from Taehyung’s hand. “Blink twice if you’re in a trance.”
Taehyung exhales, shaking his head as he sets the teacup down. “It’s just… today.”
“Ah,” Seojoon says knowingly, walking over to choose the accessories carefully. “The day you officially become half of the most talked-about union in all of the kingdoms.”
“Not helping.”
Just then, Seokjin enters. Looking at Taehyung, he sighs. “You look like you’re about to jump off a tower.”
“I just...” Taehyung drags a hand through his hair. “What if he’s unsure? What if I—”
“He kissed you under the moonlight, Tae. If that didn’t scream ‘sure,’ I don’t know what does.”
Taehyung can’t help the small smile that forms, one that lingers in the corner of his lips like a secret. “It still feels unreal.”
Namjoon hums, closing the doors behind. “Good. The best things always do.”
“It’s required,” Seokjin adds, matter-of-fact, already moving to pick up the robes. “But we’re cutting it close. The stylists are terrified of you. You can’t keep them waiting.”
“They’re terrified of you, Jin.”
“As they should be,” Seokjin replies smoothly.
Taehyung doesn’t move yet. He just watches the robes being laid out— deep midnight blue with gold embroidery trailing like ivy vines along the edges.
His ceremonial cloak, white and regal, shimmers faintly with golden thread. It’s stunning. It’s heavy with meaning. It’s real.
His breath catches a little.
“I keep thinking... what if he doesn’t want this?” he murmurs, voice low, almost like he’s ashamed to ask it aloud.
Namjoon stills for a second. Then turns around, expression softer now.
“You think he kissed you because of duty?”
Taehyung opens his mouth. Closes it. Shrugs.
“He kissed you like you were gravity,” Seokjin says quietly. “Like he had no choice but to fall.”
Taehyung stares down at his hands. They’re trembling slightly.
“He’s nervous too, you know,” Seokjin continues, walking over and nudging his shoulder. “Jimin told me he spent the entire night pacing. And he apparently cursed out Yoongi for teasing him about saying your name in his sleep.”
Taehyung lets out a quiet laugh. “He did that?”
“Word for word,” Namjoon grins.
The air eases a little. The tension melts around the edges, and Taehyung finally rises from his chair.
He moves toward the garments, fingers brushing along the embroidered gold lines.
And the room? It stirs into motion then.
Fabric rustles, metal clasps click gently into place, and the scent of lavender and cedar curls in the air as perfumed oils are dabbed onto his wrists. His robe is drawn over his shoulders, layers settling like waves. His hair is carefully combed back, curls left soft and framing his face.
“Do I look alright?” Taehyung asks as Hyungsik helps with his rings. “I mean… will I look like a king?”
Seokjin straightens the collar of his robes, then smooths down the shoulders and steps back.
“No,” he says, smirking. “You’ll look better.”
Taehyung lets out a huff of laughter, shaking his head as he steps in front of the mirror.
The reflection that stares back at him is regal, composed— his hair neatly styled, a thin chain of gold draped across one shoulder, the royal insignia shining over his heart. But there’s something else in his eyes.
Hope.
And longing.
And the ghost of a smile that doesn’t seem to want to leave.
“Ready for it?” Seojoon asks from behind.
Taehyung straightens his spine.
“No,” he says honestly.
“You’re nervous,” Hyungsik observes gently.
Taehyung glances over his shoulder. “Wouldn’t you be?”
Hyungsik walks over. “He’s probably a wreck right now. The least you can do is match him.”
That draws a small laugh from Taehyung. He turns fully, eyes drifting down to the robe. “Does he look good?”
“He looks like something out of a fairytale,” Seokjin replies. “Like he was born to be at your side.”
Taehyung’s throat bobs as he swallows.
Hana, one of the attendants, steps in then. “Your Majesty. It’s time.”
Taehyung nods slowly.
He looks at himself in the mirror once more.
Still him, but not quite.
Namjoon whispers. “You ready now?”
Taehyung’s gaze lingers on his own reflection— on the steady eyes, on the subtle smile beginning to form.
“I don’t know if ready is the right word,” he says. “But I want to see him.”
҉. *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙* *•̩̩͙❦•̩̩͙*˚ ҉
The corridors leading to the ceremonial hall are filled with flowers. Strands of wisteria and jasmine hang like whispers from the balconies, brushing against walls and catching in the breeze. Musicians line the staircase, soft harp notes spilling into the air like petals.
The doors to the ceremonial hall loom ahead, tall and ornate, carved with stories of old. Of kings and queens long past, of unions forged in fire and silk.
Behind them, the gathered crowd murmurs in anticipation, the soft rustle of finery and the distant swell of strings painting the air in something sacred, something shimmering.
There’s a hum of something magical in the air, like the palace itself is holding its breath.
Jungkook stands at the edge of it all, just behind the threshold, his hands clasped tightly in front of him. His breath is shallow, but steady, drawn in through parted lips and let out in slow, careful exhales.
“I’m going to combust,” he mutters.
Next to him, Hoseok stifles a laugh. “If you do, at least do it in the aisle. It’d be very dramatic. Memorable.”
Jimin, already in place to follow after him, leans forward with a teasing glint in his eyes. “Too late to flee, Your Highness.”
Jungkook groans softly, tugging at the edge of his robe. “You all have the worst timing.”
“Maybe,” Jimin grins. “But you’re glowing.”
Before Jungkook can reply, the music shifts.
A hush falls over the hall as the doors begin to open.
A slow, radiant light spills into the space between, as if the sun itself had been waiting on the other side. The scent of flowers swells with it, mingling with the quiet awe of the waiting crowd.
Jungkook exhales and steps forward.
The world blurs. All he sees are the gold-lined carpets beneath his feet, the way the arching windows send dappled light across the guests, and the look on people’s faces— soft, expectant, moved.
His heart hammers in his chest, but his expression remains composed— trained from years of etiquette, of palace life— but his eyes… his eyes betray him. They dart quickly, instinctively, searching.
And then he sees him.
Standing at the far end of the hall, flanked by his court and family, the King of Dalnara looks nothing like the stoic figure Jungkook once imagined.
He’s all soft grace and gleaming light, the deep sapphire of his robe trimmed with starlight gold, his crown a delicate circlet resting like moonlight on his curls.
But it’s his eyes that catch Jungkook. Like twin flames in a temple, warm and unshakable.
Taehyung’s lips part just slightly. A breath, or a smile, Jungkook isn’t sure.
Jungkook feels like the ground shifts beneath his feet.
He walks as if drawn forward by an invisible thread.
The path between them feels endless and impossibly short all at once.
Every step feels lighter than the last, each heartbeat louder.
He barely notices the guests lining the aisle— Yoongi on one side with Jimin’s hand loosely curled around his own, Seokjin dabbing his eyes a little too obviously, Hoseok beaming like the sun itself. Namjoon stands quietly at Taehyung’s side, a soft pride in his gaze.
But all Jungkook really sees is him.
Taehyung’s lips quirk, small and secret. The kind of smile he reserves only for Jungkook now. And Jungkook feels something catch in his throat. An ache, a spark, something new and familiar all at once.
As Jungkook almost reaches the dais, the hall quiets again.
The priest shuffles forward as the ceremonial moment shifts.
Tradition weaves its way through the gathered silence; the handover, the symbolic gesture of family, of trust passed from one to another.
And from the Wolguk side, it is Yoongi who steps forward.
His robes are simple but elegant, his crown a soft gleam of gold against his dark hair. He carries no grand air, no loud footsteps— but the authority in him is quiet and sure. His expression is composed as always, though Jungkook catches the flicker of emotion in his eyes.
Jungkook breathes in slowly as Yoongi approaches, offering his hand.
Yoongi takes it with both of his hands, then holds it for a moment longer than necessary. His fingers are warm, familiar and grounding.
“You’re still my baby brother, my little prince,” Yoongi murmurs, just for Jungkook to hear, and the corners of his mouth twitch upward. “Even when you’re walking down a royal aisle to marry a king.”
Jungkook huffs a soft laugh, eyes stinging more than he’d like to admit. “Hyung…”
Yoongi’s gaze lifts, past him, to Taehyung, who stands patiently just a few steps away, watching with quiet reverence.
Then Yoongi turns slightly, addressing both of them now— but it’s still Jungkook’s hand in his.
“I am giving you something today,” he says, voice clear but low, measured in a way that reaches the front of the hall without needing to rise. “He may be grown, and royally stubborn, and very prone to dramatics when he’s nervous—”
A wave of polite laughter ripples through the guests.
“—but he is also my most cherished treasure. And I’m entrusting him to you, Your Majesty.”
Yoongi pauses, and his eyes narrow just slightly— not harsh, but in that dry, sardonic way that’s pure Yoongi.
“If you break his heart,” he says calmly, “I will declare war.”
Gasps scatter. Some guests choke on their surprise. A few nobles exchange panicked glances.
But Taehyung… laughs. A rich, soft sound, like velvet unravelling in the light.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he says, bowing slightly. “And I will do everything in my power to keep the peace.”
Yoongi smirks. “Good answer.”
Jungkook rolls his eyes, sniffling with a soft laugh as Yoongi finally releases his hand and gently pushes him forward.
“Go on,” Yoongi murmurs. “He’s waiting.”
And as Jungkook takes those last steps forward, he does so with a heart full of memories— of shared childhoods and long winters, of quiet lessons in duty and love— and a brother’s steady hand at his back.
It feels like a blessing.
It feels like being seen.
It feels, strangely and wonderfully, like flying.
And when Jungkook finally — finally — reaches the dais, Taehyung extends a hand.
Not stiffly, not as ceremony demands, but gently, palm up, fingers just slightly curled. An offering.
Jungkook hesitates only a second before placing his hand in Taehyung’s. Their fingers interlace, soft and sure, the contact grounding him like nothing else.
“Hi,” Taehyung whispers, barely audible beneath the music.
Jungkook swallows, a tremulous smile blooming across his lips. “Hi.”
Taehyung’s thumb brushes over his knuckles, warm and familiar, even though it shouldn’t be— not yet.
But it is.
“I thought I’d trip,” Jungkook murmurs, almost breathless.
Taehyung’s smile softens. “You didn’t.”
“I still might.”
Taehyung chuckles under his breath, barely loud enough for anyone else to hear. “I’ll catch you.”
They turn then, together, facing the officiant who begins to speak.
The voice is low and melodic, reverent without being overly formal— words about unity and future, about faith and choice. The traditions of both their lands are woven together in quiet harmony. All of it spoken in dual tongues, phrases passed down through generations now reshaped to belong to them.
But Jungkook barely hears it.
He hears only the sound of Taehyung’s breath, steady beside him. Feels the subtle tremble in his fingers. Sees the curve of a smile threatening the corners of his mouth.
Their eyes remain locked, a secret conversation beneath the surface.
“We’re really doing this.”
“We are.”
“Are you ready?”
“No. But I want this. I want you.”
But off to the side, where the royal families are seated, Jimin is watching something else entirely.
His gaze lingers not on the altar, but on Yoongi.
And it’s not just fondness in his eyes. It’s something deeper, something knowing.
A quiet understanding that only comes from years of shared glances across endless halls, of learning how to hear each other’s silences, how to speak in glances.
He nudges Yoongi gently with his elbow.
“You didn’t cry,” he whispers, a teasing lilt in his voice.
Yoongi exhales, his lips twitching. “I don’t cry. You know that.”
“I’ve seen you cry.”
“That was not crying,” Yoongi says flatly, “I was... leaking with emotion.”
Jimin laughs, soft and bright. “You were sobbing because I got hit with a training sword.”
“I thought you were dying,” Yoongi mutters. “It was dramatic.”
Jimin leans in a little, lowering his voice, a smile tugging at his mouth. “And what would you have done if Jungkook actually cried back there?”
Yoongi’s smirk falters for a breath. Just long enough for Jimin to see the glint in his eyes, the weight behind them.
“I would’ve carried him off and cancelled the ceremony,” Yoongi says simply, and Jimin’s heart gives a gentle thrum at the honesty in it.
He watches him a moment longer and then reaches over, brushing his knuckles against the back of Yoongi’s hand. A small, quiet gesture, barely visible to anyone else.
“You did well, Your Majesty,” Jimin says, voice warm. “Your brother’s getting married. And you didn’t threaten anyone with a sword. Just political war.”
Yoongi huffs. “I’ve matured.”
Jimin laughs again, turning back to the ceremony as the priest begins the first blessing.
Their hands find each other quietly between them, resting where no one can see.
And as Jungkook turns slightly to glance at them— his hyung and Jimin, their heads bent close, their fingers intertwined— he smiles.
Because this is what it could be. This is what love could look like, even in royal halls. Even under the weight of crowns.
But just then—
“Do you, Prince Jeon Jungkook of Wolguk, take King Kim Taehyung of Dalnara, to bind your life to his; by crown, by heart, by vow?”
Jungkook meets Taehyung’s gaze, eyes shining.
“I do.”
“I vow,” he continues, “to walk with you. Not as a shadow. Not as a subject. But as your equal. As your… partner.”
The same question is turned to Taehyung, and he answers without even blinking.
“I do. I vow to stand beside you. In all storms and in all stillness. Not because I must, but because I choose to.”
Their hands are bound with silken ribbon; white for promise, blue for lineage, gold for truth. And as the final blessing is spoken and the ribbon tied, the priest smiles.
“Then let the kingdoms witness. Let the skies bear record. Let love root where it is planted.”
The final rites are spoken, the last strings of the harp drawn out like silk over skin. The officiant gives a small, knowing nod.
“You may now seal your vow,” he finishes, his voice softer now, like an invitation.
There’s a pause. A moment. A breath.
And then Taehyung steps forward, his hand cupping the side of Jungkook’s face, thumb brushing along his cheek.
Jungkook’s breath catches. Taehyung’s hand tightens in his.
And then, slowly— deliberately— Taehyung leans in.
The kiss is soft.
It’s not grand nor sweeping nor performative. It is not for the audience nor the crown or the kingdom.
It’s tender. Measured like a prayer, soft like the petals scattered at their feet.
It’s for them.
Jungkook leans in, melting into it, his hands rising to gently hold Taehyung’s waist.
Their lips brush again, and again, in the kind of kiss that promises more to come— not just in private but in the days and years ahead. In stolen moments and public glances, in laughter and quiet nights.
It feels like the turning of a page.
A beginning.
There is applause, yes. Cheering. The sounds of joy echo into the high ceilings. Flowers thrown into the air like blessings.
But between them?
Just a breath. Just the gentle brush of foreheads, the faintest smile shared.
“You’re stuck with me now,” Jungkook whispers, teasing but reverent.
Taehyung chuckles under his breath. “What a beautiful fate.”
And for the first time that day, Jungkook stops feeling nervous.
Because this?
This feels like home.
And so, they walk out together— hands clasped, hearts alight— into the sunlight, into the future.
