Work Header

despairful melody

Summary:

a project sekai au featuring all of the masterminds and mukuro. pretty much the equivalent of project sekai main stories.

Notes:

HEY! so as a heads up, junko is technically non-despair here as she gets therapy for it, however in the story she will slip in and out of how she is in canon and into how she is WITHOUT that. basically yeah BE FOREWARNED!!

you dont really need pjsk knowledge to read this, itll just be a little confusing without it tho lmao. similarly I do suggest having played all the danganronpa games (or watching a gameplay) OR being familiar with the characters involved before reading. not a necessity tho!! I am the same writer as the (now orphaned) despairs tune and this is a rewrite before you say i plagiarised this, I have the old notes files if proof is needed. ANYWAYS!! enjoy!!!!!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

I wasn't very… ‘mentally stable’ as a kid. Or ever, really.

A year after my sister ran away to join some mercenary group, I was in and out of the hospital and therapy because of a special condition I had.

Well, I say condition, it was really just a special genetic mutation, realistically.

That's not the point - it makes me able to predict everything around me, which makes everything more boring. Except despair.

I was getting better, but I…

Junko screeched, writhing as (a bodyguard? a security guard?) somebody pinned her down. Soon realising that she was currently unable to struggle free, she turned her attention to trying to hurt the man, to hopefully make him despair - and to give herself an opportunity to escape.

“Let go of me-!! Do you know who I am?! Im Junko Fucking Enoshima, the fashion queen and the future queen of despair-!! You can't do this to me-!!!!”

“Miss Enoshima, We've told you to calm down. Remember what your therapi-” Junko managed to bite down hard enough to make him bleed, wincing and yet grinning as he screamed, but didn't let go.

“Who cares what my therapist says!? She's an ugly bitch who doesn't understand the true glory of despair that we will share with the world~!” Junko began trying to kick the man as he called for backup.

“Miss Enoshima, if you keep this up, we-”

Soon, Junko finally found a way to wriggle out of the man's grasp, kicking him in the balls as she did so. The man, doubling down in pain, was in no position to stop Junko.

“Shut the fuck up! I dont need therapy or any of this bullshit and im going to go spread despair instead of wasting away, bored out of my mind doing some stupid fuckin’ photoshoot!”

Junko had forgotten about the back up the man had called for, so that day, she had been sent back to therapy, restrained.

Junko sighed as she sat in her dorm room at Hope's Peak Academy. She had taken a small break from everything, when her career was reaching its peak, to try and make a band as a way to try and stave off her eternal boredom, but it wasn't going amazingly.

Honestly, with everything Junko had done, with everything that managed to come out about Junko from people she'd hurt when she, for lack of a better word, relapsed, she didn't deserve to have the title of the Ultimate Fashionista, but here she was. Admittedly, her true ultimate talent was that of being the Ultimate Analyst, but because of that, she was also the Ultimate Fashionista as she could predict the next fashion trends before they actually began.

And here she was - taking a break for a project that wasn't going anywhere. Junko slammed her head into the notebook in frustration, almost crushing the pen in her hand. Almost as if planned, Junko's doorbell rang. Huffing, Junko tossed the pen and notebook onto her pillow and opened the door, only to see Mukuro on the other side.

“Ugh, what do you want? I’m trying to focus right now.” Junko closed the door behind her sister, heading back to her desk and beginning to look at her phone.

“...Ah, sorry. I just wanted to check up on you. You've been a little more irritable than usual, and you're not normally stuck in your room this long, so-”

Junko tuned Mukuro out as she looked through her phone, finding a file she'd had never seen before.

“...What the hell? ‘Untitled’? I didn't download this.” Junko paused before deciding to tap onto the audio file, trying to see what exactly she'd unknowingly downloaded.

“Junko, are you listenin-”

The world around her quickly began to fizzle into a bright light, colourful triangular prisms began floating around her, before swarming her eyesight.

“...What the FUCK-?!!”

The next time Junko opened her eyes, she was in a completely different place. No longer was she in her dorm room, but in some sort of street. There were hundreds of shops and buildings, but they all seemed abandoned, left to rot. The sky was a bright red, and everything seemed to be on fire, the sounds of gunfire and screams sounding out in the area around them.

It was unpredictable - It was despairing, it was everything Junko - if it had been a few years ago, would've wished for, would’ve caused. Junko giggled at the sight, her chest filling with so much excitement.

“How… How inspirational..! Wherever this is… I need to share this despair to everybody else, I need t-” Before Junko could carry on with that train of thought, a hand of somebody she hadn't realised was there slapped her.

“Junko, remember, you shouldn't be thinking like that.” Mukuro lowered her hand, grabbing Junko's hand, gently rubbing it, making them both sit down. “Do what you were told to do when you start thinking like this again, okay?”

Junko sighed, closing her eyes. This was a bad way to think. Just because she was perpetually bored didn't give her the right to make other people suffer, nor to hurt herself. She took a deep breath in and out, in and out. She opened her eyes.

“Sorry, I guess. At least you're useful for once.” Junko sighed, slipping her hand out of Mukuro's grasp. Mukuro had a small smile on her face, before she turned to look around, standing back up.

“The question is… where are we? We were just in your dorm, so…” Mukuro's eyes burrowed. Junko rolled her eyes.

“Isn't it obvious?” Junko grabbed glasses out of her bra, putting them on, slipping her hair into a ponytail. “Somehow, the file that appeared on my phone, when played, teleported us to this world. As we can see, I still have my phone in my hand. It's possible that if the way in is by playing the file, pausing it would bring us back to reality.”

“...Well, I guess I shouldn't be worried that you're not panicking, huh?” Mukuro sighed.

Suddenly, from behind one of the boxes in the street which was, oddly, completely intact, was a boy with fluffy blonde hair, dressed in black, and eyepatch on his left eye.

“Wait-! You're not allowed to leave yet, scumbags! We haven’t even given ya the spiel.” Right next to him, a girl with short blonde hair popped up, her right eye was bandaged.

“We need to take you to her… If that's okay-!” The girl had a nervous smile on her face.

Junko raised her eyebrow, watching Mukuro go into a defensive position as the children got closer.

“Mukuro, chill. They don't appear to be armed. Even you should be able to tell that.”

Mukuro looked back at Junko. “Are you sure? We don't know where we are and-”

“Yes, I'm fucking sure, it's almost as if my talent is that I can predict basically everything, especially something as small as that.” Junko scoffed, rolling her eyes.

“Come on! She's waitin’ and we don't got time for this!” The boy grabbed the girl's arm and dragged her away, expecting the twins to follow them, and they did.

Eventually, the blonde children led them to a woman wearing a black and white coat that was torn to shreds, a red skirt with white lace, and red accessories adorning all of her clothes. Her hair was half black and half white, and very fluffy.

“Upupupu… Welcome, Junko and Mukuro!” The girl turned to face the two fully, a cheshire grin creeping onto her face.

“Sooo… what's your name?” Junko glanced at the floor, kicking one of the rocks.

“Really? How rude… I thought you would know who we are… puhuhu, how hilarious! I am Miku Hatsune, and this is Rin and Len Kagamine!” Miku elbowed Rin and Len in the stomach, and they both grabbed their stomachs in pain, speaking in sync.

“It's nice to meet you…” Junko snorted, trying not to laugh at the sight.

“This, my dearest duchesses,” Miku folded her arms behind her back. “Is your SEKAI!”

“...SEKAI? Our… world?” Mukuro raised her brow.

“Yep! Thaaaaaaaaat's right! A world born from all those painful feelings - from all that despair! And we are here to find your-” Miku raised her arm and pointed in Junko's direction. “true feelings! Well, technically both of ya, and two others, but ya haven't met each other just yet!”

Junko scoffed. “Okay, freak, let me get this straight. You want me to find our ‘true feelings’? Hate to let you know but it's a bit late for that. Blah, blah, despairs bad, hope is… decent and I should stop being a prick. There.”

For a moment, there was silence, acknowledgement even. Almost. Miku doubled over, cackling.

“Well, you're halfway there, arent'cha?! Pfft, that was a good one, ‘I've already found my true feelings!’, bet therapy taught ya that one! Well, whatever! When you DO find your true feelings, they'll manifest themselves into a song! Can't do that any time soon though, ya gotta find the other two people first!”

Junko huffed, scowling, Mukuro holding her back.

“Fine. Then we'll find the chumps and then show you we don't need your stupid therapy world. Got it?”

“That's all I ask! Welp, We're all outta time! Time for you two to go!” Miku grinned as Rin and Len turned to her.

“Hold up, we barely got to say anything, surely we should get to talk to them too!” Len crossed his arms.

“I mean, it would be great if we could give them a word of encourageme-”

“Whoops! Nobody cares about you two! Bye bye!!!”

Junko began to feel dizzy. She saw Mukuro slump down next to her. The last thing she saw before her eyes closed was Mukuro disappearing into those same colourful triangles she saw before, her vision going black.

“-unko! Junko! Wake up!”

Junko woke up, back in her dorm room, Mukuro shaking her awake. Junko smacked Mukuro's arm lightly before swiping away a line of drool from her mouth.

“Ugh, I just had the weirdest dream…” Mukuro's eyes widened.

“Me too. It had…” Mukuro paused, trying to remember the events that had taken place. “I can't seem to recall it, sorry.”

“Me neither. That's odd… usually I can remember that sort of stuff, I have a good memory most of the time, so…” Junko bit down on one of her acrylics as the room fell silent.

“...Well, don't over do anything, okay?” Mukuro walked over to the door, opening it.

“...Okay. See ya.” Junko watched Mukuro nod as she left her room.

Junko tried to turn her attention back to her notebook, different name ideas, audition flyer ideas and all that sort of things crossed and scribbled out. Tearing that page out, Junko gnawed at the tip of her pen, before writing the heading ‘Band name ideas:’ at the top of the page.

“Hm… Even if that was a dream, it could've been a sign to try and sort myself out. Hell, maybe this is a sign that the whole band thing is a good idea.”

Hesitating, Junko wrote down an idea that immediately came to mind - ‘Remnants of Despair’.
