Am I The Asshole For Making My Good Friend Work In My TV Show?

My good friend, to be frank, has a terrible workplace.

I first met him through my TV show, where he participated as a contestant with his co-workers. From there, we became friends, and I started living with him at his place. Although I’d have preferred if his roommate weren’t there, I enjoyed living there as I could spend more time with my friend.

However, it was clear to me that my friend was suffering, and it was all because of his job. So I decided that he should quit his job and join my talk show!

I cornered him in a bathroom after his group work expedition and tried to persuade him. I even showed him a personal ad I created. He was quite tense, so I took him to my studio and had a proper talk with him. I explained to him that what he truly wanted in life was to escape fear, and the way to achieve it was simple: to be with me. If he were to work alongside me on my talk show, then he would live a life of comfort. A space where I can give him protection and the safety he yearns for. My friend was initially against it, but after hearing my explanation, he accepted and started working with me.

Everything turned out amazing! During the month we worked together, our show broke numerous viewership records! His choices and selections of the themes and guests were simply splendid; at times, he would even be more immersed than the audiences themselves. His dedication, adaptation, and accomplishments… yes, he was far more capable than just being a regular staff member on set. So, he became my co-host, standing by my side. I still remember his face when I proposed the idea, and his slight blush when I told him of his talent. My friend’s talent is truly extraordinary, acting as both a prophet and cult leader? That’s not what anyone can do. His magnificent charm, undeniable gift for showmanship, and outstanding appearance would serve as a stimulant for viewers.

He agreed, but wanted to start small. I was a bit miffed at this. I’ve been itching for him to be with me on the stage for months now. Nevertheless, I agreed and gave him a 100-second segment on the next show. He was amazing at it, of course. He was starting to feel this raw passion for the show, and it only made him better and radiant.

Sadly, it all came crashing down when some of his former co-workers came in during the show. They came and talked to him during the break, and honestly? I would’ve been fine with it. These were his friends; they were in the same squad, and I knew that he felt happy to see them again after a month. Isolating my dear friend would only cause problems. They also reminded me that I haven’t fed my friend in a long time, so at least one good thing came out of it. However, other than that, the decision was a grave mistake.

I’m pretty sure his old co-workers view his time on my talk show, a kidnapping where he got brainwashed despite me leaving a note saying he was working somewhere else now. But, it was a mixture of that and emotional manipulation; they can’t even get that right. It led to him wanting to leave the show, and his former squad leader, a brainless barbaric lizard with a disgustingly bland personality and house, helped him. My friend had let that lizard into his body and given him his trust, while I was told by him, “I’m scared, and I’m not enjoying this.” I had gotten angry, I’ll admit that, and physical too. Afterwards, we talked and communicated. The time I played as his good friend was uniquely enjoyable; he figured that out no matter when I tried to steer him in the other direction. He said that I didn’t have to be a good friend, just a friend. I’d like to say that we’ve reached an amiable conclusion.

I’ve been watching him ever since he left. He wasn’t aware of it until I went on this late-night romance radio show talking about him while he was working. His new job isn’t that different from his old one, and to be honest, this may be the worst job out of the two. I mean, just the things he’s been doing lately– participating in a barbecue event and buying an ugly, cheap lizard doll. His arm is now replaced with glass, glass. It’s too fragile, and since it’s stuck to a foolish and pitiful creature like my friend, I don’t think it’ll last long. Though it has been entertaining watching him, I'm a bit concerned about how long it’ll take before he calls me again. Currently, he’s in his old workplace, trying not to let anyone see him, and once again, he’s confiding in that boorish brute of a man.

Recently, I’ve been doing some reflection and wondering what I did wrong. I’ll admit, not feeding my friend was a mistake on my part, and I didn’t do it out of malicious intent! I just genuinely forgot he had to eat. And coupled with the six punishments I had him do, which were shown on my TV show, too. But, I still feel a bit hurt from his actions because I truly feel like the talk show was the best place for him. Especially considering his new job. I’m not looking for any definite answers, but rather I’d like perspectives on what you would’ve done in my place or his.

So, am I the ‘asshole’?

Considering his old coworkers were worried, the guy probably looked starved and for someone who claims to care about their friend so much, not reminding him to eat despite the warning signs is sus

His job consists of having to face the many dangers of the world. He’s a ‘coward’ as he likes to call himself; so he often panics, and his heart beats at an unnaturally high pace, which I don’t think is right for a human, whenever he goes to work. He would cry until he fell asleep many times, and it’s a challenge for him to wake up in the morning sometimes. He lives in constant fear, stress, and anxiety, unable to trust anyone, and suffers from endless tasks, awful office politics, and verbal abuse in his workplace. He’s great at his job as a rookie; they keep giving him harder missions, and it’s taking a toll on him. Once, he had even begun crafting his will at work because he thought he was going to die! And I wasn’t even getting his Netflix subscription; it was one of his coworkers who got it! You can tell that this isn’t a healthy environment for him, right? Also, there's nothing he won't tell me. After all, we're good friends. 😁

Oh, I watch him cry many, many times. My friend doesn't like to talk much about his emotions; he much prefers keeping up the casual good friend. Most of the time, my information about his feelings comes from my reading of him. He has a fear of being understood, and even if I did do something other than what I did, I'm sure that he would've second-guessed my true intentions. But, I suppose you are right in a way. I know I've already lured him into a sense of security whenever he's around me; he does things for me that he wouldn't do for anyone else, such as bathing me in his blood. Though there are times he is fearful of me and despises everything that makes me the person I am today. If I were to comfort him in these moments, his trust in me would've increased, and maybe he would've never left thinking I was going to hurt him...

Goodness no! That's just plain tacky. I would much rather showcase it in a museum rather than in my home, but if I were to have it, I would frame the animal corpses and place the teeth in glass cases, or send it to a jeweller to make it into accessories.
