The three members of Huntrix sat at a table: Rumi in the middle, Zoey to her left, and Mira to her right.
“Hi Hunters!” they said, waving to the camera.
“We're still on hiatus but we wanna stay engaged with you all,” said Rumi. “We couldn’t do what we do without you.”
“Definitely,” said Zoey. “You’ve flooded our socials with lots of questions about why we left Sunlight, what happened to the Saja Boys, how we afford all those crazy effects, all that jazz. So we’re gonna tackle all that in one video.”
Each of them had a fresh bowl of Huntrix-branded ramyeon ready to eat.
“And I don’t wanna see any comments calling us vain!” Mira yelled. “We eat these all the time ‘cause they taste great, not ‘cause our faces are on the package.”
There were a few seconds of silence before all three of them gobbled up some of the noodles.
*Sluuuuuuuuuurp*
“Anyway, as promised in the title, we are actual demon hunters,” said Rumi. “It’s not just an aesthetic, it’s something we actually do, and we’ve been doing it for years.”
“Congratulations conspiracy corner of the internet, you were kinda right,” Mira said. “I remember seeing this really unhinged Reddit post analyzing all our lyrics and music videos and concluding we must be a team of mystical fumigators, which is wrong but it’s not not wrong either.”
“But yeah, demon hunting’s a tradition going back a dozen generations here in Korea,” Rumi continued. “The demon king Gwi-Ma sends his minions to our world to capture souls for him to consume, but the hunters fight back with their weapons and their voices. And the adoration hunters receive from fans strengthens the Honmoon, the barrier between Earth and the underworld.”
“Happy Fans, Happy Honmoon — that’s our motto,” Zoey said. “So we really mean it when we say we can’t do this without all of you.”
“WE LOVE YOU!” all three exclaimed.
“And with the Honmoon, we can do this!” Zoey announced before the trio summoned their weapons. “Ta-da!”
“Yeah, you saw these at Namsan Tower,” said Mira. “And almost all of those so-called ‘special effects’ we’ve had at concerts were actually us being magical girlboss warriors.”
“At least Bobby’s stress levels really went down once he knew we’re not constantly blowing money on effects,” said Zoey.
“They didn’t go down, they just got replaced by stress over us being demon hunters.”
“Oh.”
“Ramyeon Break!” Rumi shouted.
*Sluuuuuuuuuurp*
“Anyway, You know my mother, Ryu Mi-yeong from the Sunlight Sisters,” Rumi said. “I know I’ve been called a nepo baby, I won’t pretend it’s not true. Celine primed me for this life from minute one.
But the Sunlight Sisters were also demon hunters, and at some point during their career my mom fell in love with a demon…”
Unbeknownst to Rumi, Zoey made 👉👌 signs.
“…and then I was born with naturally purple hair and these demon patterns. And I can also do this.”
The camera glitched out for half a second, but afterward Rumi was different. She had claws, purple skin, more vibrant patterns, and a golden left eye. She opened her mouth to display her now-prominent fangs.
“Just now I had to concentrate to do that, but stress can make me involuntarily transform. That’s what happened at the Idol Awards.”
“And that wasn’t really me and Mira!” Zoey exclaimed. “Those were demon imposters! We kinda freaked when we actually saw her patterns ‘cause we thought that meant she sided with Gwi-Ma. Sorry…”
“You two know you’re forgiven.”
Rumi then shifted back to her standard human appearance.
“‘But Rumi!’ I hear you say. ‘I’ve seen pictures of you when you were younger and you didn’t have any visible patterns. And you definitely didn’t have any on your face until a month ago.’ And to that I say: you’re not wrong. They started really tiny riiiiiiiight here.” Rumi pointed to her upper right shoulder. “But over time they spread. First they covered this arm, then they went to the other arm, and now they’re all over. I learned that demon marks are a representation of shame and who wants to guess who made me ashamed of myself?”
“Let’s just say that Celine’s training emotionally fucked us up real bad,” said Mira. “She definitely succeeded in teaching us how to fight demons but opened the door for a whole slew of problems.”
Rumi nodded. “Yeah, she drilled into us that our faults could never be seen. Maybe that was advice she had to follow back when the Sunlight Sisters were around, I don’t know, but I couldn’t help but feel it was directed to me in particular.
She always made me keep my patterns hidden, even from Zoey and Mira. She said they would never understand and I should just wait until the Honmoon turned gold and they went away.”
“As far as we can tell, there’s no actual evidence that would’ve happened, by the way,” Zoey noted. “She just didn’t like seeing Rumi’s patterns and just hoped there’s a possibility they would go away.”
“Plus, whenever we had trouble we’d usually be too scared to bring a crisis to her,” said Mira. “I wanna say congratulations, idiot. You taught us not to trust ourselves, so obviously things would go wrong when a big disaster struck.”
“So yeah, ‘Golden’ was a lie,” Rumi said honestly. “Or it used to be. I’m actually done hiding now. Anyway, Zoey and Mira saw my patterns, and I didn’t do a great job explaining myself, and I just insisted I could fix everything but my voice got all demonic and we all felt the Honmoon physically shudder.” She sighed. “And this is when the story takes a bit of a dark turn.”
Mira stared directly into the camera. “When she says a bit she means it gets horrifically dark.”
“Alright, it got really bad,” Rumi admitted.
After a second or two, she reached her hands out toward her fellow hunters and they were quickly grabbed.
“I left to find Celine at the sanctuary where she raised me. I offered her my sword…… and asked her to kill me.”
She paused for several seconds, knowing she should give the audience a little bit of processing time before she continued.
“You have to understand, I lived my whole life thinking the demon part of me was a mistake. After the awards, I had accepted things would be better off if I was out of the picture.”
“And that’s wrong!” Zoey shouted as she wrapped Rumi in a great hug. “WE LOVE YOU RUMI!”
Mira joined the group hug as well. “We always will.”
Rumi smiled. “Thanks girls.”
After a bit more hugging, they went back to how they were before, with Zoey and Mira holding Rumi’s hands.
“So Celine refused,” Rumi explained. “She said I could just cover up again and she’d come up with some BS explanation about what happened. And something broke in me at that moment.
If she killed me, then at least she would’ve been consistent with her beliefs, but no, she kept seeing me as a demon until the one time I specifically asked her to. She couldn’t even look at me!”
“I bet a lot of you realized this is why we left Celine,” said Zoey. “And it was surprisingly easy to sever all corporate ties to her. We confided in our manager Bobby, and he got us our songs! Bobby’s seriously the nicest person in the universe but when he’s in serious mode you don’t wanna mess with him.”
Mira nodded. “I think this calls for another Ramyeon Break!”
*Sluuuuuuuuuurp*
“Anyway, about the Saja Boys!” Zoey shouted. “Sorry, we’re telling the story out of order but the Saja Boys were in fact demons who came to Earth to weaken the Honmoon and acquire souls for Gwi-Ma.”
“We followed them after that TV interview and we all fought,” said Rumi. “My sleeve ripped and Jinu saw my patterns but he helped me cover them up and didn’t say anything. The mere existence of a hunter who’s part demon fascinated him. He sent me a message and we met in private a few times.”
Mira smirked. “Was it really private if an old lady spotted you and gave you a necklace?”
“She didn’t seem to recognize us so I’m still counting it,” said Rumi. “We mostly met on rooftops but we went to an aquarium one time, and he told me about demons. All my life, I only knew Celine’s narrative. I never felt the need to question it, but hearing another perspective was enlightening.”
“She taught us demons have no feelings but apparently all they do is feel,” said Mira. “That’s how Gwi-Ma controls them, by exploiting their feelings.”
“And isn’t it weird that she taught us demons have no feelings but also taught us to repress our feelings?” said Zoey. “Coincidence?”
Dramatic music suddenly played as the video zoomed in on Zoey’s face like the Dramatic Chipmunk meme.
Rumi chuckled. “Anyway, I still believed the golden Honmoon would remove my patterns, and I figured that if Jinu stayed on this side when that happened then he’d be safe from Gwi-Ma. We would both be free. But Gwi-Ma got to him first, and that’s when things really went south.”
“Some demons pretended to kidnap Bobby at the Idol Awards but it was just a distraction to get us away from Rumi,” said Zoey. “That’s when the imposters stepped in. And the discord all of you felt when it seemed we broke up made the Honmoon fade away and let Gwi-Ma break into our world. Oops.”
“And I don’t want any of you feeling bad about that!” Mira stressed. “It wasn’t your fault! You were intentionally manipulated. And then you were hypnotized into going to that Saja Boys concert.”
“If it’s any consolation, me and Mira were hypnotized too,” Zoey said. “Gwi-Ma was speaking stuff into our minds but it was in our voices. It was creepy! But yeah, we went to the Saja Boys concert, and I won’t pretend that song they did wasn’t an absolute banger. And then Rumi showed up and snapped us out of it!”
“After I yelled at Celine, I spontaneously teleported away,” said Rumi. “For the record, that’s a demon thing, not a hunter thing. I don’t even remember where I ended up but I had some time to clear my head. I decided I was glad the old Honmoon was gone, because now we had an opportunity to make a new one, a better one.”
“So we broke out of the trance and fought the Saja Boys,” Mira said. “They definitely weren’t prepared for us.”
“I looked under Mystery’s bangs and he was so dreamy!” Zoey exclaimed. “I still stabbed him tho.”
“The more we fought, the angrier the Gwi-Ma got.” Mira smirked again. “He thinks he’s so tough but he’s afraid of a song.”
“And then he kinda vacuumed up his minions to strengthen himself,” said Zoey. “It was weird, not gonna lie.”
“Once he was powered up, he fired a blast to finish me off, but Jinu stepped in. He gave up his life and his soul to save me.” Rumi shed a few tears. “I wish he had survived, but in his last moment, he finally got to be free.”
“Rumi might have two souls now, by the way,” said Zoey. “We haven’t checked.”
“I’m just not gonna think about that right now,” Rumi said. “But with Jinu’s soul, my sword got a powerup, and with your support we were strong enough to vanquish Gwi-Ma and built the new Honmoon, one not built on secrets but on love and trust. And it’s stronger than ever!”
“And we all lived happily ever after,” said Zoey. “Oh, you have to meet our new pets! Derpy! Pspspspsps!”
A great blue tiger suddenly rushed over and affectionately nuzzled her.
“You guys want his adorable face on a t-shirt? ‘Cause I wanna wear a shirt with his face.”
Meanwhile, a 6-eyed magpie flew over and perched on Mira’s arm, staring directly at the camera.
“And this is Sussie,” Mira said. “Yes, she’s judging you. No, you shouldn’t take it personally.”
“Caw.”
“They were Jinu’s familiars, but it seems they’re bound to me now,” Rumi explained. “So they’re our new band mascots!”
“So soft…” Zoey mumbled as she sunk into Derpy’s fur.
“C’mon, Zo,” Mira said. “We need to say bye to everyone.”
“Oh, okay. Thank you fans for all your love and support over the years!” said Zoey.
“Thank you Jinu for saving my life, and helping me accept the demonic parts of me,” said Rumi.
Thank you Bobby for being the best manager in the whole universe,” said Mira. “He wants to adopt Rumi and he’s probably drafting the paperwork as we speak. Stay tuned for more news on that.”
“And until next time,” all 3 of them said, “byyyyyyyyyye!”
